So i had this idea for a puzzle for some time but i don't know if its worthy or not. So i gonna ask you guys what you think of my little puzzle idea.

You create a giveaway for a game then you send a message to 5 friends(or people that commented on a forum post) with one of the chars from the giveaway(or 5 chars that are not in the giveaway link if you want to avoid bruteforcing) and tell them that they have to find the other 4 who are scattered around your friends(or users who posted a comment). If they want to find and enter the giveaway they will have to find the other 4 chosen ones and make them share the info they have. The catch is that you also send 5 more messages with fake chars and tell them that they are the only one that received a fake one and if they want to participate in the giveaway they will either have to convince people that ask them that their char is real or gather the 5 valid chars. Once anyone has 5 chars you tell them you tell them to contact you and reveal the chars that they managed to get, this way you could see which chars they collected and see if they have any fake ones in there. Every one that will have 5 chars will be told that they have the correct ones so they can't share the info. Once all the people have found the 5 chars you will contact the ones that managed to get the correct ones and the ones that managed to fool the others and send them the link to the giveaway. As a consolation prize for those who don't manage to get the correct answer you could send them the fake chars next time the puzzle returns.

I appreciate if you could leave some feedback!

I think it is a great idea, if all the people like to chat and accept friend request but if any of the people you give your chars is not likely to accept every other FR you have a problem. What do you think about starting a group for something like that, so every member of the group knows there might be FR from other members of the group, because of GAs like described?

Most people on my friend list are from SG(85%) and they usually don't have private profiles or dislike getting friend request.
But as a precaution i could also asked them if they are ok with being added by random people on my friend list (i think there is something in the friend request message that tells you that the user that invited you is also friend with someone else on your friend list, or you could just check my friend list before accepting any invite) and only then send them the chars. If someone doesn't want to be added i could make a list to accompany the message and tell them that people in the list don't have anything to do with the puzzle and won't accept friend requests.

pool needs to be small say 50 members..cuz any more than that and it'll be too chaotic..

I only have 46 friends and some of them will be included in the do not add me list, it will probably be a max of 25 people that will participate.
If i chose the forum option i could always close the topic once i have enough people.

People is not always online. And when they are online, others are not, you know different timezones for example, or working, studies...

Steam allows offline messages! They are not as good as real time chat but that still is a way to contact someone.

Mm then I suppose it could work if you create the giveaway for a reasonable amount of days^^

the idea is good but I think it's very difficult to manage it...

I don't think it will be that difficult. I will need to do some preparations before but after that things should go on easily since i won't have to do much.

wait
is this gonna be game specific?
14 friends wishlisting a single game and it'll be treasure hunt for them..
it certainly useful filter that'll thin out the herd more

If by game specific you mean a game that most of my friends want then YES.
I'm not going to make them do so much work just for a random game.

well, take an arbitary number of strings of same length. for example 4 of them, call them A,B,C,D

xor the original one (call it X) with all (or some) of them : X xor A xor B ... and post the result.

then make xor pairs (and/or triples) of the original "keys" and pass them around.

these are in that example: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD.
pass those around. if enough people share the keys, they can combine them to get the result.
no single point of failure.

you need to share the combined keys and the information which originals were combined as well as how the original was encrypted.

That's way too complicated. I could simply encrypt the giveaway link with AER-256 and split the encryption key in 5 or more parts with some fake ones, but that will only encourage brute forcing. Also them failing is half of the main idea and i find it interesting. If i wanted them all to find the giveaway if would have created a group puzzle on itstoohard.

well, actually the xor approach is very simple and even if you miss a single key, bruteforce is impossible.

you can scale the difficulty by choosing the keys you pass out (and/or by not revealing how the some keys are combined)
