Well, that was unexpected.

EDIT: Unfortunately - it's based on the mobile port.

27th Feb 2018 A.D.
The Day of Lavos saw the eruption of Chrono Trigger on Steam store, and the subsequent destruction of the fanbase hope for a decent definite version.

I guess Crono failed to get a good ending in real life.

I highly doubt it. Maybe one of two patches to fix the bugs. I don't think Square cares much for PC ports after their release.

Based on their track record with their mobile ports (FF V & VI), I would say no.

Anyone have any idea why is it slated for store availability for only a month? I mean its obviously a cash grab but is this a prelude to something? Are they porting Chrono Cross or testing the waters for other old Squaresoft games?

Isn't it just the limited edition that's going to be in store for just a month?

From here:

How long is the limited edition available for?
Until the 2nd of April 2018.

The regular game itself will still be available after that date.

At least they didn't fuck up the sprites like they did FF6.

This being a mobile port I rather buy it on the play store.
So sad, they wasted a good opportunity to make some good port.

My heart stopped for a second after I read your tittle.

Then my hopes and dreams were butchered by the price tag and that it's a bad port. Square needs to put some actual work if they want someone to pay for a game they can easily emulate in virtually any PC...

Well that's a shame. Was going to put it on my wishlist, but if it's the cruddy mobile port, going to give it a pass. Still waiting for the SNES version to hit the Nintendo eShop

Square, you could've ported the PS1 version and things would've been fine. Why use the mobile port? You knew it was going to go down in flames.

There's a fan prequel / rom hack for the SNES version called Flames of Eternity. I haven't played it yet, but it's in my queue. Might be worth checking out for fans of the series.

Crimson Echoes / Flames of Eternity, Prophet's Guile, Colosseum for a decent arena mode, and then there's the retranslation floating around.

Its a crying shame that the 3D project got killed off. And for that matter that FoE was C&D'd right before completion.

Whelp, at least I got my DS copy :/.
Need to replay that game one day. I started it when I was on vacation but got stuck and didn't know where to go (didn't have internet so I couldn't look up a walkthrough). Decided to wait to get home before moving forward and I haven't touched it since :/.

Part of me wants to rationalize this as "Maybe they can't port the SNES and PS versions due to some legal red tape."
The other part of me knows it just Square Enix cutting corners because slapping the mobile version to Steam and charging 15 bucks is easy money.

This is very... very unfortunate.

Would there be a chance that some fans mod the shit out of this?

Announced, released, and likely ported all in one day. Man SE is pushing my buttons. I really want Chrono Trigger on Steam but I just can't support this. The screenshots look baaaaaaaaaaaaad. Even if (big if) the gameplay is as good as it should be, it'd be awfully hard to look at those graphics while completing it.

I've never actually finished this game. Shame that it's a terrible mobile port but at least it's available in my region, unlike Final Fantasy IV, V and VI.

They at least acknowledged that they're aware of the backlash and are looking into it. Whether they actually do anything about it, it remains to be seen.

In the meantime, they updated the mobile version and added the fugly filter from the Steam release to it. I'm guessing they're working on a shared code base for both versions. And while they added controller support, and support for modern phones, they dropped the support for Android TV. So it's one step forward and two steps back on that front.
