Well, you're either a later generation than my younger siblings, had low anime interest where you grew up, or didn't grow up in the states;
Between my generation and theirs (in the areas we grew up), it was a complete craze, right up there with Pokemon.
On the plus side, you're going to get a WAY better experience with the series than we did.
Now you get the option of
Dragonball Kai (A polished version of Dragonball Z that removes all the notorious filler- though if you want to be able to get the references for the show, you'll need to watch the original DBZ at some point)
and of
DBZA (Dragonball Z Abridged- google it, it's a parody by Team FourStar and it is AMAZING. Not only because it's legitimately funny and well put together, but because the characters are more interesting and the story better, than the original work o.O
It's basically the definitive Dragonball Z, these days.)

I think Cross Ange was probably meant to be an homage to Macross in some respects. It has a lot of old mecha anime references in there, so while it can definitely be appreciated by someone who isn't into the genre, mecha fans will get even more out of it.
Either way it is a great show, easily one of my favorites from last year. I just have to warn anyone that sees these posts and gets interested in it that the first few episodes are a bit misleading about the kind of show it is, so if it puts you off for any reason, I encourage you to keep watching because it only goes uphill.

Well, it still isn't a game, but a world that is dictated by games. I guess if you really wanted to, you could argue that it is a game because of the whole chess idea to challenge Tet, but still it is best described a world.
