Feeling annoyed at all these people breaking the rules of our site so blatantly, I was typing up some long rant about how they are breaking the rules of not only our site, but the humble bundle. I went looking for some evidence to make sure that it was against their rules, but I couldn't seem to find anything specific in the TOS. So I opened that handy chat they have in the bottom corner of the screen and had this discussion:

→hey, is it against the terms to give away a steam key for gish to a friend if you already own it?

Johannes: fine by me =)

→well i know i wont get in trouble, but i mean technically

Johannes: nah, we don't care who you give your keys to

Johannes: the only thing that is an issue is that people sometimes do it by accident, and we can't really support or help you there then

Johannes: so as long as you know what you are doing, go for it

→well i didn't expect that answer, but thanks!

Obviously this information doesn't change the fact that the Gish giveaways are breaking the rules of our site, but maybe the discussion on if the rule is appropriate should be reopened? As much as I agree with the rule, the humble bundle people don't seem to have anything against it. Thoughts?

Reasonable enough imo. It's just a matter of rules here that people choose to break. that's about it, isn't it?

Raiden, are you the fucking warden of SG? Jesus Christ, let it go. People broke a rule, and in doing so are giving away a free game. Not everyone who is giving it away is a piece of shit like you think and got the Bundle for a penny.

Stop being such a tool, leave people alone, and let Cult worry about the shit that HE is in control of.

My attitude doesn't change anything. You're annoying, and my giveaway is still going strong.

AKA, go fuck yourself.

I am trying to keep this thread as nonjudgmental as possible. I want to know people's opinion on the rule about only giving away unused urls for humble bundles, and if this conversation I had changed anyone's minds.

Yes, I think it is fine to give away both HIB URLs and/or Steam CD keys from those. Always have.

The only thing I have ever disagreed with in regards to this site is the removal of Bundles when they are on sale. Other than that, rules are pretty fair.

The rules actually say you cannot give away the keys, so I don't understand which side you're taking.

Well I think it's pretty easy to guess. Not really.

It's rules vs opinion so I'm pretty sure judge dread wouldn't care too much and just fire away like Rambo.

What?

Random movie references

But really though it's just a rule that isn't visible enough about keys from bundles and people giving them away without thinking twice about the past issues we had about keys. Well I guess thats an issue if some people weren't aware of what happened so I guess ignorance sort of helps since it's not their fault.

The problem with it I think is it floods the site with points, thus making the 5 dollars(or whatever) the site says its worth mean very little if people put up a ton that they got for 1 cent.

Well... my two cents:

On one hand, many people (me included) now simply have a key that would never be used, because they have the game already. It could also be given directly, to a manually selected person.

On the other hand, there are simply some rules here. And rules are supposed to be either enforced, or changed. Having a rule which the "ballsy" users violate without any consequence, while the "timid" ones obey it, doesn't make any sense.

So my question is: is this particular rule going to be
a) changed
b) enforced
c) ignored
?

(EDIT: To be clear, I don't care whether the answer is a) or b), as long as it's not c).)
(EDIT 2: Yay, it seems the answer is b). :-))

Not using sg to gift them is also an option. It's faster to give them away in the group chat.

I know, that's the "given directly, to a manually selected person" part in my post. I wasn't asking about what to do with the game, but what to do with the rules. :-)

I agree. A rule that isn't actively and unambiguously enforced is an meaningless rule. They might as well get rid of the rule entirely if they're not going to do anything about it.

It's true that if you already have the game it would be nice to give it away, but wouldn't it work best to maybe just keep the rule about no bundles while they're still being sold, while allowing individual keys to be given out?

That would be the best way to change it tbh

^ When users see that, the Rules/FAQ sticky thread on the forums means jack shit. That is on the top of every page whenever you go to create a giveaway. It sends mixed messages to giveaway creators.

While I will say that I knowingly broke the rule about HIB keys in regards to Gish, I did so because 1) I already own Gish and 2) I wasn't one of these scumbags who bought the bundle for a penny. And, at this point, if people are GIVING AWAY Gish (even those that bought it for a penny) who honestly gives a shit? At the time of Gish being added you couldn't get it without paying the $5 minimum and if you were one of the snakes who bought it for a penny but don't want Gish, giving it away is the next best thing, I guess.

All of these white knights, moral high road riders, and all the other dick riders here need to lay off. The Gishstravaganza that happened tonight is not a big deal, everyone getting butt hurt over it needs to calm down. Let the winners enjoy their free gifts at the expense of a rule bend, this one time.

I sort of agree with you. I've got Gish from a previous bundle, my friends don't care about the game and there's no thing I can do with the key.

Exactly. I asked all my friends and everyone in the TF2 IRC before I put it up on here.

You can still buy the bundle for a penny and get Gish, though. It's not a "beat the average" game.
Although I don't condemn anyone who does make a Gish-away, I for myself am not gonna break the rules for such a small thing, even though I do have a spare key due to owning Gish prior to the bundle.

We experienced a total of 57 Gish giveaways in under 3 hours. It generates a ton of points, gives users feedback credit for games we don't allow, and we want members that win to have full access to the bundle they won. This is the ensure they are entitled to anything else added to the bundle. Like what happened when SpaceChem was added. There are a lot of factors weighing in on the decision to only allow complete bundles, so the decision was made and it has since been enforced.

Please note this wasn't an easy decision, and it wasn't a moderator only decision. The community also demanded change because of the massive amount of Humble spam. Previously, we were experiencing 100 giveaways per hour.
