I have had long hair since I was 16'ish and am now 28 with hair to the middle of my back. First off long hair is NOT for some people as it requires extra maintenance washing/conditioning and lots of brushing. But in the end it's all personal preference. :)

It's not about what other people think indeed but you still have to consider that not every guy looks good with a long hair.

Just see if you like it. not everyone looks good with long hair tho, it depends on the hair-structure-type-something. but you should not care what others think, opinions are different anyway, there is no "right" or "wrong".
and just as others already said, it takes time.... muuch time.. for me it's sometimes annoying and I'm about to cut this shit off, but meh, actually I like it too much :p

My husband's hair is almost waist-length, he wears earrings, and he doesn't care what anyone else things. ;D

Like most people, I don't really think about 6" as being long hair. Hell, when I joined the Marine Corps in high school, my hair was down to the middle of my torso. In the end, just go with what feels comfortable. Sometimes, I'll grow my hair out, other times (like now), I keep it short. Same with facial hair. Some times I just get tired of dealing with all of the hair and shave it off and start over.

I like men with long hair. I think women either really like them or really don't. Well, I do. :p Unless they are kept very badly of course in which case you're better off not growing it at all.

Personally don't find long hair on men at all attractive, but I know other girls who do so -shrug-. I guess it's similar to girls having boy-short hair, it suits some and not others, and it's all personal preference on whether you find it attractive or not.

The main thing is whether you're going to put the effort in to maintaining it. A few of my guy friends have long hair and clearly never blow-dry it etc. You can't just let it air dry like short hair without it just looking a mess you don't care about.

As someone with long hair for a while already, I would say go for it. It's impossible to don't hear some shit about it from time to time but totally worths it.
Just take good care of it, a nice and bright hair is a magnet to girls. I'm almost sure than my gf will leave me if I cut mine :P
But if you're are just gonna let it grow without giving the time and treatment your hair deserves, then forget about it. Cuz if doesn't look good where is the point with it?
Just don't go for a plain hairstyle or power metal band member style. Put some glam on it!

I wouldn't laugh - i had long hair (see attached images, long hair and after cutting them down) tbh, i had a lot of fights because of that and stuff, but wouldn't grow it back because it's just too damn time consuming (washing it everyday - it takes 1-2min with short and 5-10 with long, also the drying and shit.), and it's not the most comfort thing to have.
