TLDR; Google is letting people play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey free (USA only) through the Chrome browser in order to test out their game streaming technology (video buffering, input latency, etc.). You can sign up to participate here.

It's the next thing for sure. Google, Parsec, Steam, Microsoft, Sony... all of them? The videogame Netflix is near.

Not if we all refuse to use it. I will go back to buying physical copies if I have to. Do they even sell modern PC games on discs anymore? I would imagine a large games would have to be sold on blu ray discs unless they are going to give you like 10 DVDs.

Edit: Looks like they still come on DVDs :)

Last PC game I bought on DVD I installed it and then was asked to activate it on Steam and when I did it then started installing it again via download and spent 6 hours doing so before I could play it...

You mean you're counting on the idiots who would give away their data to Big Brother for free gifs, to "just say no"?
The number of people alive who believe Google is their best friend would knock you out.
Micro transactions in game would also not exist if we all refused but...

The "videogame Netflix" is already a thing. You know, since Netflix originally was a non-streaming service. ;)

OnLive did it many years ago i've played demanding games on my potato netbook thanks to their game streaming service.

I also tried OnLive. I think this streaming gaming si a good alternative to casual gamers.

Shadow.tech, LiquidSky and other is currently better. Virtual cloud PC (Windows10 + any legal soft/games) is better conception, than "streaming" limited amount of games.
Infortually, price of this is too big for regular using. It turns out that either a very expensive time of using or an expensive cost of an unlimited monthly subscription. Shadow Cloud PC $35 per month ($25 for FIRTS month with any promocode like "ALEDLVUR") is not small money for not hardcore gamers.
You can find more informantion/comparisons about Cloud Services on PC and on Android in YouTube on channel FlickStiq.
The time for Cloud technology for everyone and everyone has not come yet, but somewhere close.

If it's good enough, people will use it, so they will keep making it.
Nothing we can do to stop it really.

Liquidsky allowed me to play through Witcher 3 in 2016, eternally grateful. Basically I rented a gaming pc for 10 bucks...

I don't have a Google account and try to avoid using Google as much as possible. I also don't want to be streaming my games, same as I don't stream movies and / or series.

People are pessimistic, but I am quite excited. As long as this won't become a requirement, I'm all in for giving people more options. No need to bitch and moan because "heaven forbid, they're not owning their own hardware! Oh the humanity!"

Honestly the only reason i need the latest hardware for, are games.
So i am all for streaming on external hardware on a rent basis.

If you still own the license like now i only see benefit cause then you have the choice to get an high end PC, or rent it through streaming.

it will be interesting to see how they deal with input lag and all the technical stuff.
playing a game that's running on a machine on the other end of your connection asks for trouble.

still this is the wet dream for future generation peasant stations. and maybe even pc. but i don't see that coming. at least not for pcmr.

It's all in theory, but if they could somehow pull off seamless high end performance on AAA games, I could easily see it getting popular in PC gaming. If you could get the performance of a $1200 GPU over a high speed internet connection with a potato and $100 per year subscription, there wouldn't be much sense in buying high end hardware when it'd become outdated and have to be replaced before you'd come close to paying as much for a subscription.

Only in theory it sounds cool but I'd imagine you still need that great graphics card to see games in 1080p+ anyways!! along with super fast response monitor, with quick mechanical keyboard and high dpi mouse and with streaming now you'd definitely need a( maybe expensive) reliable steady fast internet connection so I don't believe "saving money" is a pro in any way here. At most you'll be able to save on a cheaper cpu and not needing an ssd, the trade off being needing that more expensive internet connection and probably a monthly gaming streaming subscription.

The input latency is a definite concern though. I could see streaming gaming having some use for more casual gamers - the type to play mobile phone games - to "try out" different types of games that they would otherwise never see or play.

Personally I like my games available offline, even mobile ones.

That's what I meant by saying "if they could somehow pull off seamless high end performance on AAA games", if it were able to run above 1080p on high settings without stuttering just by making use of a high speed connection, it would be incredible. You don't need any of the peripherals you mentioned for anything but personal preference, if you already have fiber or any high speed connection then a subscription could be a far cheaper solution, especially for somebody looking to get their feet in the water with PC gaming.

I agree with preferring to have my games available offline. Sadly that seems to already be less and less common even when you DO own your hardware :\

I played through Witcher 3 on Liquidsky in 2016, minuscule input lag (though I wouldn't play Dark Souls on it). It cost me 10 bucks to rent a gaming pc. I imagine the technology got better in 2 years, certainly enough for a stupid assassin's creed.

People, physical sales aren't going anywhere. The hardware market is just too big to give it up for streaming gaming.

My internet is way too slow for this to ever be an option for me. Assuming you have a good connection, what's the best FPS you can get with this kind of service?

I'll only give it a chance if it has no noticeable input lag. I can't be assed to play games with input lag, just like on many of the other game streaming options.

So they are testing what nVidia already had in beta 1 year ago or earlier through that app of theirs that they are pushing with drivers... playing games through video... (at least that's the most successful version of the tech I've seen working, not counting OnLive and Sony's attempt to keep PS3 have some compatibility with PS2).

I don't think google will use it for gaming... but maybe I'm not a visionary.

The new Google Chromecast is bluetooth compatible so you can attach a bt controller and stream games... So yes, I think it's a good move.
