Apparently, Chinese Steam (with only 57 games approved - and thus available - at the moment) is the only option for people out there.

Players in China are reporting that the Steam storefront and all of the Steam community pages have been blacklisted, meaning they are no longer accessible in the country. Back in February, Steam China launched, with a much smaller collection of games on sale. This site is still up and running, but Steam Global, the full Steam site with far more games on offer, has been taken offline in the country on Christmas Day.

The move comes as a surprise, but fits with the pattern of the Chinese government's actions around video games in the past 12 months. Fortnite was shut down in China on November 15 this year. Children were limited to three hours of gaming a week, and cryptocurrency was banned. In order for new games to be allowed to be developed, they had to be free of several elements thought to be anti-Chinese, including the presence of "effeminate men". Two months after the restrictions, it was reported that not a single game had been approved.

Dota2 and CS:GO, two of the most popular games in China, are both on Steam China and will be largely unaffected by this decision. However, many other games, especially by smaller developers, rely on the huge audiences China offers in order to stay afloat. For example Monster Hunter World, by no means a small title, has more Chinese reviews on Steam than it does English language ones. Of the ten most recent reviews for It Takes Two, Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards, nine of them are Chinese. Call of Duty Mobile, though a mobile game and therefore not affected by Steam, has as many players in China as it does in the rest of the world combined. The nation is a huge market for developers, but without Steam, this market has been virtually snuffed out overnight, on Christmas Day.

The fact the site is blacklisted means Steam is not just temporarily down, but has been deliberately banned. Confirmation of this has been shared by users on Twitter, ResetEra, and Reddit.

It's unclear how this will affect Chinese games going forward. Most will still be able to land on Steam China, meaning they can still sell in the country, but if developer access to Steam Global is as restricted as player access, it may mean that Chinese devs need to partner with devs from outside China to land on the main Steam site - and doing so may risk missing out on Steam China. It's also unclear what this means for Devotion, the horror game infamously removed from Steam for disparaging references to Xi Jinping, China's head of state.

What is clear is that this is probably China's biggest restriction on the gaming industry yet.

I wonder if people there can at least download their purchased games or if they are completely f*ed. CDN should be different than store/community but it's not clear so far I guess. Also probably means death of Steam in China, who's gonna rush to join a 57 game network?

Please don't spread lies about "online" media magically causing bad eyesight.
Every nation's citizens consume "online" media which does not seem to affect their vision.
Every nation's citzens, even if they consume media (not just the "online" kind), on their tvs/screens/lcds/phones, don't have increasing eye damage to the huge 95% you are saying.

Poor eyesight comes from far more factors then that, major causes are physical damage directly caused by pollution and genetics.

Trying to scapegoat online media for cause of bad eyesight.
Even trying to scapegoat screens (tv/phones/pc/etc.) won't work.

From my understanding, if your claim that 95% of chinese have bad eyesight, it is clearly not from screens or "online" media.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As I work in a job directly related to this problem I have direct and from other sources evidences that excessive/longer periods of online media consume/gaming leads to certain eyeproblems. And it's back uped in most states eyesight decay of modern age.
So who is your evidence outside of your opion?

And poor eyesight you mention has 0 to do with my stated problem. The problem of myopia is drastically increasing due the increased consume of media and gaming(the problem is the change of lifestyle and the close proximity). While you are right, that gaming etc. isn't the sole problem or cause, it's drives it further up and do it in other countries as well.
So limiting/baning things related to it don't solve the problem(eyesight don't come back), but it decrease the problem afterwards and for further generations.

Banning content doesn't solve a health problem of screentime exposure.
Limiting specifically videogame consumption doesn't solve a health problem of screentime exposure.
Even if we pretend that the ban was about eye health and was a well-measured response, that also still doesn't touch upon the fact that Hbarkas was remarking on the (worldwide) industry moderation and how it ultimately didn't matter.

They're not shitting on anything, they're using basic observation and making a simple remark. If you're going to jump up someones ass, its usually better to open up with something compelling otherwise it just betrays where you're actually gunning from, y'know?

You have different insight? You know the truth?
Or just commit to the internet trolls and stating your opinion despite knowing anything about the reason?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, and I already gave you that insight. Banning effeminate men does not protect peoples eyesight. Banning specifically videogames that are not approved does not protect eyesight. Applying the time limit rule to videogames and not all digital screens does not protect eyesight. Therefore we can in the very least conclude that it either has nothing to do with eye health, or their choice of measures is terribly designed (at best). We can also observe thhat because of the severity of their restrictions on the general internet, they prefer to control information tightly. Together, we can extrapolate that they view videogames as a potential source of 'problematic' information they want to control, along with showing 'problematic' values they do not approve of, so seek to control it.

To also repeat my other point, they were 'shitting on' nothing, they were observing global moderation matters, and how it ultimately did not matter. That wasn't "trolling", and neither was my post, it was simply showing you their thoughts. Or in my case, a general rundown of why I hold that opinion (which you have failed to address), and have instead chosen accuse the speakers.

Yes, it is an opinion, but so is your standpoint. The difference is that your opinion did not hold up to scrutiny, whereas the counterpoint was more grounded in rationality. If you feel the opinion is incorrect, then refute it. Merely trying to diminish the speaker shows that you little else to offer and comes across as childish.

You gave your opinion. People replied with theirs. This is how public forums work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah banning can't solve the problem. For this generation. That's a matter of logic. You can't reverse such changes just with a reduction or limit, that is out of control. For such a help other things are needed.
It was an example of how they try to make a balance.
The limit for videogames could be more than just being viewed as problematic information. It could be more of the dependence from people for it.
Rationality what? Just making a claim without any backup is now how more facts than my statement? And you didn't provide any insight how or why they decided so nor someone else, so it's all guesswork. And that is something you call more logical? That's total nonsense actual. Opinion != fact

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I provided my 'backup' along with my original post. My second post was just repeating what I had already said.
I provided 'insight' by demonstrating how your claim about eyesight did not stand to scrutiny.

Unless you are going to substantiate your own viewpoint as fact, then kindly stop fixating on my rebuttal as 'opinion' when all you have offered is opinion also. Apply your standards to your own posts before you try to fling them at someone elses, thanks.

And no, it is not 'all guesswork', I was able to point out critical flaws in your standpoint, which pointed to two conclusions : That either your supposition was wrong, or those enacting the measures were glaringly incompetent. When I offered my own opinion, I showed why I held it, and built it upon standing patterns. So yes, I do in fact call that more logical.

So, you admit that what the CCP is doing in limiting the free will of its people is authoritarian and nonsensical, but you just have complete blind faith the they must surely be doing it altruistically and for the people's own good? Well if that's not a cult-like devotion to a government then I don't know what is.

China is well-known for having farms of trolls come on Western websites (sites that even its own regular people are forbidden from accessing) and spout false support for its government's behaviour. They are also known for being hypocritical and accusing others for the dodgy shit that they are doing, or using whataboutism to change the subject when they know what's happening is wrong. And here you are, spreading lies and shilling for a genocidal dictatorship, constantly bringing up "what about USA?" when you have no convincing arguments; all straight from the Wumao playbook, and you have the audacity to accuse everyone else of being trolls? I would hope Xinnie the Pooh is paying you well to deep-throat his "propaganda", but it's no secret why they call you the 50 cent army.

And the reason they did this is obvious to anyone with more than 2 brain cells - CCP doesn't like its citizens exposed to foreign media. It's a cultural tool, a source of information that they aren't able to control (god knows they try, with Tencent buying up game studios left and right, and Hollywood forced to cater to Chinese audiences to be one of the handful of films permitted to screen in that market - other countries would be ashamed at this blatant pandering, but China lacks such self-awareness). Viewing this content might give the citizens ideas, like how controlling their government is or that freedom is worth fighting for. It also provides a form of entertainment, and if you let the citizens have some joy in their lives they might seek more of it, and that's unhelpful when your goal is to brainwash your people into being mindless drones working 20 hours a day to prop up a failing economy.

Free will != freedom. Not everything must be allowed. Not everything must be tolerated.
You know the growing market of gaming? The excesses? No?
Maybe they went over with it with such a move. Maybe they indeed just want to ban it outright. They don't tell, but you don't make guesswork you just tell them the evil without real evidence.

I bring up USA as those are the major china is evil claiming ones. And what you do is typical for a troll insulting and imaginering what the other is like. I'm critical to many things, but you just follow the propaganda it seem?
Just because other countries allow a lot of shit must it be the same for china etc.?
Must every country decay as a form of FREEDOM FOR ALL?
Maybe they stepping up way to hard, but that is maybe because we are at the state, that any minor limit is already to much and we forgot that there is a limit for society to peaceful live and work together and everything else must be sacrificied for the personal freedom.
I can'T get something? Dictatorship! Censur! LIMIT OF MY FREEDOM! Sounds quite the bullshit or?

And for a failing economy they are the biggest growing economy world wide. While they do it on the backs of their population, but which country in such a state isn't it? Or the einvironment? Can you say it?

That's like a bully saying that because someone else also bullies smaller kids it's fine if they do it too. That's not how morality works as far as I know, you can't just point at one bad thing already existing to justify adding to the problem.
I'm not going to defend the states, they're imperialistic assholes, so I'm not going to just agree to someone else being one just because they feel it's their turn at being a dick to everyone else.

Dude you have a clue about morality? USA make supreme claims and how the world (mostly) should work despite how each region, religion, country and what not is quite contrary to the extreme. Not every morality have to be right. Democracy was an utter fail for afghanistan. Everyone said it's moralish right for that country to must have democracy despite how the country, the people work and live.
Morality can be deadly wrong as it turns the world just in good and evil, wrong and right. It's mostly abused by people to use their false supremacy to give a reason to rule over others. So yeah, who cares, when such big bully of USA is still out there making terror against a lot of states etc. because of their morality claims etc.? Who exactly claims the RIGHT morality? It's just an argument to legitimate your own agenda and supremacy over others.

Dude, at least pretend to follow the conversation.

Don't talk shit about peoples morality when in the very same thread you give a pass to concentration camps because "well other people do it".

If the idea that evil already exists/happens elsewhere is all the justification you need to be fine with / actively defend it, then that's just further cementing that you are in no position to posture about moral superiority.

And you say "noone cares about their actions in any way" while talking about america, but there was, is, and always has been MASSIVE ongoing criticism towards them. Even from their own citizens. Even from their own political candidates. And celebrities. Highly televised. Highly widespread. Complete with huge protests and legal challenges.
Also stop fixating on america already, it's fucking weird. We're not talking about america.

But I mean, I know you'll just ignore that like everything else you ignored while shilling, but whatever.
I'm so done with this idiocy. Consider me out

That's utter nonsense. If you read carefully, I don't write I pass on it because other do it, I pass on it as I can't change it(or better said it would be troublesome to do something in that matter). I have own problems and there are bigger/more important probelms as that. That's my statement. Selfish? Maybe, Ignorance? Could be. But don't pretend to be better or other if you don't do jackshit in that matter yourself. It's just a lie to you and others and especially for that case.
People != polititians.
And no I don't talk about USA only. Many countries gave a statement, but only a few take any actions in this cause.
It's a good propaganda thing to blind the masses about bigger problems/more important ones.

It's hard not to care at least a bit, when you know whatever BS the Chinese government is doing, tons of other governments in the world (including mine, and probably yours too) will see it as a model of population control and try to apply it. In my country, they're not even hiding anymore, they say "hey China did it and it works nice, let's do it too!". That's pretty much how we got all the covid pass crap implemented so fast everywhere.

It's not about caring, it's more about relative things. Why should I waste my time and work for that cause?
It's far from me and neither really important nor big of a cause.
If we set it as standard, there are way more important things to do first before we investigate such a cause. But it's easier to spread propaganda about such a small issue in the world than carring about bigger issues in the world.
How about you organize something for them? Else you are just he same, just lie to yourself and everyone else that really take action for this cause.
And covid pass is something needed for the entire health care. You must some of those retards that think covid isn't harmful? Come back when you lost 5+ that were close to you due that shit.

You seem to have assumed that the two things I said were just one and ended up misunderstanding me, sorry for that, I should have been clearer about that.
I don't think THIS particular event is going to cause WW3, I just see this as yet another move from a government that's desperately trying to control public opinion, and the only reason for them to be this heavy handed I could think of at that moment was that they suspected their grip on power was slipping. Power corrupts, and it also breeds paranoia.
The second point I attempted to make was that I don't believe in throwing a whole country under the bus just because their leaders are assholes, everyone deserves better than to be ruled by a dictator. It's just that when it comes to a major power internal struggles could escalate into a global conflict. The same could happen if the US collapses in a particularly messy way, and no country (or more accurately state) is eternal, they'll all fall eventually, some are bound to do so in a particularly catastrophic manner.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda dont cut it, it didn't happen but oppression of masses in China is reality. Can't tell much about stalin, so guessing in the blue.
And if we value that, how can be the war crimes of england and especially USA(mass-murder and genocide strategy) be better? The truth is: No system is in itself good. At best a system is neutral. Claims that something is evil/better comes from the inherent evil with the people claiming. And claims something is better than/morale superior are super dangerous as they easily lead to a 2-sided worldview only. And that is quite the evil in itself.

But i guess all dead people pretty happy now because on their bones factories were built.

China is happier than most other countries. Wealthier than 85% of the rest of the world. Freedom != getting all and everything at any time. That's something most have to learn. Suppressing seem bad, but you don't know what other factors can cause as harm. Freedom as they want? Democracy in a population over 1 billion people? How should they rule? Dividing into several opposing parties making their own agenda, creating hate and fiendship and demonising the other sides?
It's easy to claim false good things like having two or more parties is good. But the truth is: It's dividing people, lowering the whole progression of the nation and its spirit.

Yes, majority of people is forced to that. Everything is censored, independent medias are banned, those who talk are silenced,... Because regime has FEAR from free will of people; its not for protecting people from "evil world", its for protecting "more equal than others" (Orwell - Animal Farm)
So yes, people are forced to "agree" with regime, they can't say anathing different. 1000M of people in China are silenced (+ people in another countries with dictators regimes)
But some people are agreeing with this regimes. Mostly those, who are most incompetent and most selfish, those, who are with anyone, who can provide them benefits - and it is sad... :-(

It's simple - experiences from post-communistic countries in Middle/East Europe and from other countries, in which were totalitarian regimes. It's always the same - "official numbers" are saying everyone is happy, nobody wants change, situation is ideal; but reality is totally different.
And you convicted yourself from lying (with indirect proof). I asked you to your contry, in which are you living - it was, of course, without any answer. On your Steam profile is USA. But time of your responses is pointing to east from Europe. You was writing when time on East coast of USA was 3:32AM. And when was there afternoon or evening? Silence... So sending you to China is pointless, you are (probably) from this part of world. You are lying in small things, you are lying in big things - it's one of our proverbs

Another fact is, that someone can say they aren't happy(with your government) their life is the opposite of what they say(wealthy, healthy etc.). So what to trust?
I'm currently indeed in europe. So what exactly you want to know? The jackshit that is happening there? The government I hardly know? It's quite different from my home. To some part good and a few bad things.
You are the troll so yeah a discussion is useless as you just troll with nonsense answers.
