I keep seeing threads about people getting banned from Humble for trading keys, so I just want to be sure about something.
I'm from the EU and have some spare keys from the latest Humble Monthly, can I give them away at Steam Gifts without fear? If not can I just give them away to mutuals on Twitter?

There should be no problems if you give them away as keys since they can't detect who activated them. Giving away gift links (either on SG or mutuals on Twitter) is quite risky though, because they always interpret it as "trading" and might ban you because of it (regardless of whether that's true or not)

In short, give away keys and you should be fine

OK, so I'll be safe as long as I use keys and not links, right? Thanks for the info!

Possibly but extremely unlikely. PLEASE read the rest of the thread where this point has already been discussed at lenght before spreading unnecessary fear.

instead of casting insults

I'm not sure how I insulted you in any way but it's just a little frustrating because it often appears like it's always the same people giving advice on what appears to be incomplete information. But anyway Sorry if I came of rude I'm not having the best of days today.

I don't intend to continue this discussion, it's not like I have a horse in this race, but just some food for thought:

If you're so sure Humble cross-checks revealed keys against libraries who do you suppose do they handle private libraries and multiple accounts (which are sanction by Steam themselves as is shown by the fact there is a point How many Steam accounts can I attach to a single Two factor authentification app??

It's absolutely ok if you wanna unwhitelist me. I haven't done whitelist giveaways for ages so most people who have me on their should probably remove me.

I'd rather not edit my own comment so here is the source that multiple accounts are approved sanctioned by Steam.
Can I share my phone number between multiple accounts?

Edit: 😅 Crap, I actually said the very opposite of what I was trying to say.

On the other hand, as I understand it, if you link your account with Humble, they can see if all of those redeemed keys are actually in your Steam library...maybe depending on your library privacy settings.

Well, I already set them up on this site, so what do I do before it's too late?
EDIT: I unlinked it from the Humble Store, but now I'm kinda scared?

Yeah, unlinking can't hurt until the next freebie but I wouldn't worry about Humble cross-checking your purchased and revealed keys against your Steam library. They'd have to do that manually and I highly doubt they have the manpower for that nor would it be worth the effort.

If you want to be completely safe you can set your library on Steam to private but keep in mind you'll have to make it public once a week to synch with SteamGifts and also everytime you win a game in case the creator wants to check for unactivated or multiple wins.

If you decide to do that I would strongly ask you to switch to public out of your own volition immediately when you notice you won something as it's extremely annoying for creators to have to go around begging "Please, please, please would you set you library to public so I can check you're not a thief" or file a support ticket for them to check every 5th gib.

I'm hoping unlinking will be enough because the other option seems annoying?

Yeah, IMHO that should absolutely suffice. Even unlinking is optional. The general consensus here seems to be that we should be fine as long as we avoid using gift links because those are very easily traceable while keys are not because Steam has no interest to help Humble. They are competitors afterall.

Yeah I don't think they'll go and check what keys you have activated. After all people have multiple accounts on Steam. it's not illegal.
And by the way, since you're from the EU, there have been people getting their accounts blocked because they were using gift links, who are from the EU and just told HB that what they were doing was illegal under EU consumer laws and their accounts got reinstated very quickly.
They know what they do is illegal and that their TOS are not compliant with EU laws (and i'm sure a lot of other laws) so they are quick to withdraw when poked.

I wouldn't use gift links anyway just not to have to fight with them but if anything did happen, there's always that.

I've given (or traded) away literally hundreds of gift links with never a problem. Then again, I don't have dummy accounts and don't buy multiple copies of the same bundle. It's only the leftovers that I gift or trade.

I am in the same boat. I do not buy multiple copies, I do not trade leftovers. I only give them away, and not all that often. I have never had a problem with HB, probably because my behavior is not that of a "trader."
