One of the biggest perks to PC gaming is mods.
A lot of the time when a person is asked why PC gaming is so great, many people will answer because it has mod support.

I'm just curious how many of you use mods?
What kind of mods do you use exactly?

How often do you used mods?

View Results
All the time. Almost every time I play a game, I will be using a mod.
Quite often. I play with them more than I play without them.
Sometimes. I play without them more than I play with them.
Very rarely. Once in awhile I will use a mod, but I forget they are even a thing.
Never. I've yet to use any kind of mod.

From my experience i firstly read about the mods, if they change a lot the gameplay (or gives you something imbalance, check some Dungeon Defenders weapons mods) i try to play the "vanilla" game first, and then improve the game mechanic when i finish them; if the mods are graphics improvements, i generally go for them :)

I used to play games with mods a lot, and I can see their merits (though lately it seems like mods is developer speak for letting the community make our content for us), but lately I haven't. It's not that I don't like mods, and I use mods when I'm playing a game like Arma III or something, but so many of the games I play anymore are multiplayer and frown on mods (like MMOs) or simply don't support mods.

It depends a lot on the game in question. If it's a buggy game, I'll use fan fixes, games rushed out the door often have restoration mods that cleans up and restore cut content that is still left in the code, for games like TES 3+ or Fallout 3+, I mod every aspect of the game, for games like Neverwinter Nights or Shadowrun Returns it mainly tends to be player made campaigns, and in strategy games like Civ, things that fix imbalances or introduces new mechanics. I guess translation patches also counts, I've used a couple of those (thus I was able to play Cave Story long before its official translation). Oh, and for Rogue Likes, tilesets (graphics mods) tend to be the most common ones.

In reality I do play more games without mods than with mods, but if a game has good mod support, that is another selling point for me.

I use to use mods all the time, especially when I use to run my cs server for a few years we had tons of mods. In more recent times I don't use mods as much as before but I still use mods. Most recently I've used the mods for Shadowrun Returns, the community made campaigns add a lot of playtime to the game. Also used a couple HD texture mods for some older RPGs (Gothic, system shock2, two worlds)

Never been a big mod user, the only ones I tried were some small mods for skyrim. Something like show books not read, enchanted towns, stuff like that. Nothing too game changing

If talking about the fully fleshed mods then Fallout New Vegas only at the moment. I'm thinking about trying this baby someday, but I guess I have to finish DE GOTY somehow first. ;-;

I use graphical mods for older games, multiple mods for Fallout / TES games, and performance mods.

I used to use Sleepy all the time, but then Valve introduced worldwide region locks...

Seriously speaking - depends on game. Games I plan to invest a lot of time into - sure - modded most of Bethesda games before launching. Loved Sonic Generations, got mod for Sonic DX stages etc. For most titles thou first try is not-modded title. If it sucks I may look for mods to make it better.

In my experience, mods are power hungry, ban happy neckbeards with no life so I rarely use them, especially this jatan11t character..

I very rarely use mods. Its not that I think theyre bad or anything, its just that I have a very, very short temper when it comes to computers, and if a mod takes more steps than just sticking it in a folder, I dont have the patience for it.

The only game I enjoyed modding was Skyrim. I used to love my mod that filled a bunch of the towns with trees, or the grass one that made the fields actually look like fields.

I pretty much only use widescreen/resolution fixes for older titles and community-made bug or compatibility fixes. My goal is generally to play games as they were intended, but on modern hardware and without any game-breaking bugs where possible. Restored cut content I occasionally dip into, but not on my first playthrough.

Agreed. Only use them if I need a widescreen/FOV fix or if theres a bug that prevents me to complete the game. I don't care much about graphics, specialy for older game, I kinda like to play them the way its supposed to be.

Some years ago i used to play a lot of mods of Civilization IV, they were great and made some interesting new games with the engine! Havent tried the mods for Civ V, no idea if they are actually good or not...

In the last few years the only mod ive tried is Long war for Xcom, and its great im enjoying it a lot, and i heard about a mod that connects fallout 3 with new vegas, im going to try that when i buy fallout 3 goty, it seems nice to unite both games and have a long game with both of them :O

But ive never tried other mods... im curious about the GTA IV mods that seem to make the game great...

I used too, I played many mods with Duke Nukem 3D, Half Life 2 or Max Payne 2 and it was great but now I have so many games that I usually quickly move to another game (I don't think we can count DayZ standalone as a mod). It's almost sad. The video game industry is changing, we're now in the future !

My PC barely can handle the game by itself. Some mods will just tear my machine apart.

And since I play mostly Multiplayer games, I rarely use mods. Dota 2, CS:GO,etc... .-.
When I was younger I used to install some mods on Minecraft.
If stuff for Garry's Mod counts as mods, then I use quite more often, but I don't play GM that much.

I used to use mods a lot, especially for lfd2 and Garry's Mod. After they introduced workshop(which really disliked and refused to use for some reason), modding sites with awesome, cool communities died out so I just played games vanilla. I did eventually start using workshop, but I stopped actively playing them.

I always check if a game I'm playing has mods. It varies a lot how much how use mods for a game and also how many and type of mods available. Skyrim? Fallout? Hearts of Iron? Civilization? STALKER? Total War? I almost don't play these without mods.

+1

Mods make PC gaming. If nothing more than updating a game's graphics with patches or better graphics. I mostly try to keep the original game (so no crazy mods), but New Vegas is so great with all the graphic updates, weather, camera fixes, etc. I play it with lots of mods and it's amazing. Others you listed are all great choices as well.

FNV with DUST as the base mod, and 140 other mods on top, amazing, just *** amazing
Realistic Damage (1 headshot = death, 3 shots = death), new gang mods, new monsters, it's HELL ON MOJAVE, ah and a random alternative start mod... insane, it was insane as I spawned in a hot zone at lvl0, made my way out of the city hahaha rofl, awesome
then with Wasteland Defence I setup camp on Black Mountain... then with a companion management mod I had been trying to keep alive those few friendly npcs I found (very few lol)... got the underground hideout... got ready and went into the city to try to find the answer, ESCAPE THE MOJAVE
one day I shall come back to it and find the answer and escape lol, I love that game (when modded)

I actually prefer the old way of doing it, Civ IV had much more and better mods than Civ V has ever had
There is the advantage of easy mod mixing though

step 1: make full backup (compress with 7zip on ultra using 10Gb RAM, optional)
step 2: mess it up
step 3: recover the backup, reconsider the meaning of life and learn from your past mistakes
step 4: dark magic
step 5: perform a ritual, sacrifice someone to the gods
step 6: profit
