RPG maker, one of the more maligned game making tools out there (although these days I think GameGuru and Unity might have a worse reputation). And I get why people dislike RPG-maker so much, most of the games that get released that use the engine tend to be rather craptacular. But there's been a few good ones.
To the Moon, and its sequel, Finding Paradise, were both pretty good, although they were more walking sims than RPGs. Still good games.
Clandestinity of Elsie was surprisingly good, but I feel like this was a case where it was despite the engine, not because of it.
Skyborn was a pretty good "regular" JRPG, and I've heard that Echoes of Aetheria (by the same devs) is supposed to be even better.

Anyway, instead of just writing bump, please tell us about an RPG maker game you've enjoyed
(Cthulhu saves the World was by the way not made in RPG maker!)
And here are the giveaways

Thank you for the giveaways, Fnord.

I liked A Bird Story from the same developer of "To the Moon". Same style, shorter.
On the other side of the spectrum you can find the hilarious Doom & Destiny. Good to have some laugh.

Taking a completely different tangent you can find the Legend of Queen Opala serie, but be warned: it's VERY NSFW. They're mediocre games at best, but the gameplay isn't really their selling point. Also they're freeware, you can find the download links on that site.

I actually really like RPGMaker games, the bad one's have given it a bad rap but I even find the bad ones funny in their own way. My favorite one was 8-Bit Adventures: The Forgotten Journey.

I didn't hate Moonstone Tavern, though judging by it's rating, just about everybody else did. As soon as I realized that the overly ambitious weather effects could be turned off and the frame rate settled down, it turned out to be a quite playable and even pleasant little management game (with adventuring and an actual story line). By the time I finished it, I felt sorry for the devs, who clearly put a lot of effort and time into it.

Eternal Senia is the first one I remember off the top of my head. It's short but good. It's also free, so that's that.

Have to agree that Skyborn was pretty decent. Would've probably ignored it had it not been one of my sg wins, but I ended up 100%'ing it in the end ^^

I have the first episode, but I've been a little hesitant in playing it because of the middling reviews it has.

What about the series do you like so much? What should I keep in mind as I'm going into it?

The ones that I have played so far, I have enjoyed. They are:

  1. Greyfox
  2. Legend of Mysteria

I thought Cthulhu Saves The World was one, but it looks like I was mistaken!

I do need to play some more of them! That site mentioned above helps a lot to pick them out!

I've actually been playing some RPG Maker games recently. I kind of like the simplicity these games tend to have. It's a nice change of pace.

I finished Trick and Treat, OFF and Eternal Senia recently.
I also was playing Yume Nikki, but I got kind of lost so I've held off for now.

Here's a playlist of a guy who's done a bunch of reviews for RPG Maker games. I really enjoy his videos:

Ib is the only one I can think of that I've played, but it has a great atmosphere. The simplicity of the graphics and the soundtrack create a really creepy vibe that you can't get from modern mainstream horror games.

Close Your Eyes doesn't get the recognition I think it should. I highly enjoyed that game and have since enjoyed all the other games the developer has made (all of which has been in RPG Maker thus far).
World's Dawn I feel is a great example of what the RPG Maker engine is capable of and utilizes it well for the game being a farming sim rather than an RPG.

To the Moon and A Bird Story.

While not RPG Maker game, but looking kinda similar, I recommend checking out Celestian Tales: Old North - very enjoyable.

Rather than name one that's up on Steam now, I'm going to name a couple of ancient relics - Crestfallen Ascension and Inception. Those two games are the reason I started playing RPG Maker games at all. At this point, finding them would be quite the effort, because they were a bit heavy on the musical copyright infringement and the creator has moved on to actually selling games now.
