Duke Nukem Forever: Me: I need a quick game to play, why not pick this up? ive heard its bad but ill give it a chance its cheap after all... Couple Days Later Wow this game is pretty fun its got some funny humor decent mp, and loads of interactable stuff, could be better but for 8$ getting the collection is a great deal.
Everyone else: WORLDS BIGGEST PIECE OF SHIT WHOEVER MADE THIS SHOULD GO DIE.
True Story.

Yeah, guess people never got over the big hype and the disappointmend it brought. I enjoyed the game, because I played it for the humor. I expected Duke, and what I got was a 100% Duke! ^^ Gameplaywise its a solid game with some shortcomings, but still nothing I´d call "bad".. its just that there are a lot of better games to play.

Being one that never played any other Duke Nukem game I can safely say that I loved it so far. This gives me the feeling that people are hating it because it isn't exactly like the older games were. But then again I can't really say that since I didn't play them :P

ehh its not exactly the run and gun type of game, but it is a great challenge and you have to be quick and accurate

Mass Effect 3 - The last 15 minutes. That sums it up pretty well.

I don't hear anyone complain about the Deus Ex HR ending yet it was the same type of thing. You make a choice about the future and, even though the following cutscenes are visually mostly the same, you knew how everything changes for the world/galaxy.
And there ARE differences in the endings. The fate of Shepard and the fate of the Reapers change depending on what you picked, and you see that happen in the scenes. What you see happen to the Reapers in the blue/green ending is different than in the red... and the extra scene about Shepard is only in one ending. Trying to be vague because I don't want to spoil things.

You can't compare ME trilogy with DE:HR, you just can't. DE has almost no character building, most of the characters were boring, uninteresting. Your choices from the very beginning were meaningless. It didn't matter whether you went all Rambo in the missions or stealth/no killing anyone. You weren't building any relationships with characters/attachment so when someone died you went like "yeah, s/he's gone, let's move on". ME was the exact opposite. Whole ME2 was around characters, their stories, relationships, etc. Your choices did matter (to some degree, skip the end). When character died I felt bad I couldn't save him/her. I love both games but for different reasons.

I just denied the existence of the ending and still believe that Shepard actually got indoctrinated after the reaper beam hit him. Following events only decide if you wake up in the rubble and stay human ultimately defeating the reapers or becoming indoctrinated. As there only was 1 right choice.

Rocksmith. I expected slightly better clone of Guitar Hero, but was amazed at how great it actually is.
FTL. Didn't expect anything, didn't know what's it about even. Then sunk 20+ hours in 3 days when I won it.
Zeno Clash. Also had no idea what exactly it's about. Loved the art and the setting.
Botanicula. ALSO didn't know exactly what's it about. Turned out to be the cutest p'n'c ever.

I really loved Dead Island. It's great when playing with friends and I can't wait for Riptide.
I just won Mark of the Ninja today, and so far I like it for the same reasons.
Playing through Skyrim now, and I don't hate it. The main story isn't great so far, but who cares? The other stuff is fun enough, and it's much better than Oblivion could ever have hoped to be.
Haven't tried Deus Ex. :/

I don't get the appeal of Don't Starve. I played a little bit of it and got bored pretty fast.
I didn't expect much from Walking Dead, having no prior experience with the franchise, and now it's one of my favorite games, and I love the comics as well.

Dayz / Warz - People talked so much about those two games, I hate them both. And no its not because I dont like the genre, I actually like surviving, exploring for stuff, killing zombies and more, but those two games weren't as fun as I hoped.

I have pretty much the same comments about Skyrim, Mark of the Ninja and Deus Ex. They popped to mind instantly. I bought all of them impulsively, and I'm quite glad I got Mark and Deus that way. A shame for Skyrim though, was also expecting something more like Fallout.
Otherwise, I'd add:
The Binding of Isaac: I was certain the fun would last a couple hours at most, but damn is this thing addictive.
Batman Arkham Asylum/City : I received a copy of the later when I bought my graphic card. I regret not using the code before now. I was expecting a shitty game, but the gameplay is really cool in both, and the story too. I'm glad I compulsively bought Asylum to complete the set without even trying the other: I spent a wonderful Christmas time playing those.

Faerie Solitaire. I think I heard about it before and thought that was the most idiotic concept I've heard in years. Then when they gave it for free I was like "hell, why not" and there went 20 hours of my life.
Ys Origin also proved to be surprisingly good. I don't even know why I bought it; the only time I heard about Ys series before that was someone mentioning it's full of clichés, but then I played it and was blown away.

BioShock - I was not prepared for how amazing that game was. Just about the perfect game in my opinion. I didn't really have high expectations, I just wanted a game to play and thought it looked cool. I found myself completely immersed into the wonders of Rapture. Even though I never really played any games with any real horror in it, I loved the creepy atmosphere. It's my favourite game now.
Skyrim - I actually went into Skyrim expecting not to like it, I never played an Elder Scrolls title before, and I watched my brother play it a little, and the melee combat system looked horrible. Thought I'd at least give it a try and found myself playing for 8 hours straight. I still stay away from melee combat though, just feels stupid, magic and range are fine though. Main story does suck though; no arguments there.

Homefront: Just beat it, pretty short campaign, cloned shooting mechanics, wasn't as epic as I hoped. While the setting was quite interesting, they should have given more scenes to show off the horrors of the korean occupation, and what America has become, as that was the selling point of the game. I got most of the plot, as it is quite linear, but that makes it quite boring. I tried to play the multiplayer a bit but I couldn't get into it, as it is bland. I wished they could have gone a little more futuristic, as tech is rapidly changing and it would have been a great opportunity. I thought it had quite a bit of potential, though it missed out on many opportunities.
Lone survivor: the game is quite simple, but that might be the reason why it is great. The plot, the atmosphere, and the choices you can make blew my mind. The game isn't exactly much from afar, but once you peel back the layers, you find a deeper meaning behind everything you do within the game. I liked how your worst enemy wasn't the weird zombie things, but yourself, as you try to interpret what is real and what isn't. Just like Shodan in system shock, you can't get rid of your emotions, your inner psychological insecurities, you have to bear it throughout the entire game until the very end. What you do will passively affect your gameplay and how you think. The game isn't exactly horror, but more like a thriller that expertly places you in situations you could imagine yourself in. The game does a very good job of making you become the character. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this blew out anything I expected.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.
I went in expecting the same framework as the basic Neverwinter Nights 2. I was completely wrong and I was happy about it. There are let's plays of them on the LP Archive, I can't begin to explain MotB's story as well as the writer of those Let's Plays did.

^ This! Didn´t expect something that awesome by Telltale, tbh... their previous games where just "nice" and I did not get the sense of big improvements in their games over the years.. all of em had pretty much the same pros and cons.. but then BOOM, there was Walking Dead, a true masterpiece! :D

Sequence- Wasn't expecting much when I went into this one. Turned out it was awesome! Short... but awesome!
The Walking Dead- I'm unfortunately very disappointed by this game. It might just have been hype seeing as how many people recommended it and it was chosen and game of 2012, but I mostly found it annoying. The puzzles were boring and uncreative and despite us being promised choice, it felt like it didn't really matter in the end. Also I'm still pissed off at the absolutely stupid shit some of the characters pull, including the protagonist!
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams- I dunno, it might just be me, but I found this game AMAZING. If given the choice, this is definitely my game of 2012... again, I don't know why, everyone else is either uninterested in it or say they got bored by it. I found the gameplay nice and creative, the visuals stunning and the difficulty just right to be in everyone's reach while still providing a challenge.
Serious Sam 3: BFE- Before playing the game, I was told that there were some major changes done to the usual Serious Sam formula that have dulled down it's gameplay. And it really did start of somewhat slow but when it picked up the pace it showed itself to be a great game and definitely deserves it's title! :)

Fallout: New Vegas. I never played Fallout series before, and has no clue what's the gameplay. I bought it just because a friend clocked hundreds of hours on it and didn't stop bragging about the lore.
Turns out I love doing all the quests and some adventuring there. I regret not buying the Ultimate edition.

For better or for worse.
I'll share mine.
Skyrim: So Skyrim was a disappointment for me. After hearing all the hype from it being one of the best open-world RPGs ever made I had high hopes, but Skyrim didn't really meet my standards. I should note that I only have about 5-6 hours in Skyrim The story by far is the biggest disappointment for me. Even though Bethesda didn't make Fallout: New Vegas I was expecting the same great quality story that Obsidian brought into the franchise, but that wasn't the case. The gameplay is great, could of been better in my opinion. As in any open-world game exploring is a must and climbing mountains and going into random caves not knowing what to find is my high point of the game, but most of the quests I did felt bland and it made me not care at all for the story. It's not a bad game in any means, but the hype made it seem much more than it was.
Mark of the Ninja: I just gifted this game recently and honestly I didn't think much of it. In fact I thought it was another hyped game like Skyrim, but that's not the case. I can't say whether the story is good or not as a whole since I'm in the second mission, the gameplay is just as fun as people say it is. Everything that you do is just so satisfying, seriously.
Shorter entries since I don't have enough time.
Dead Island: I have no idea why this game is a hit-or-miss, I thought this game was terrible from what I heard, and I think it's a okay/good game.
Deus Ex: Just like Mark of the Ninja, everything you do feels satisfying and there's more options to complete the mission from the get go. The aiming system might make people look away and this great title, but the game went for the RPG approach more than the FPS one. And the story is amazing too.
Your turn!
