You can join the beta here.

Not having to automatically update and being able to rollback to the previous version are great features that Steam should also have.

I have been taking part in the private beta. I love it to death already. My favorite website with it's own platform. It's beautiful.

Personally I think steam needs the "Backup copy download" feature more than anything. The lack of DRM-Free is the main reason why I have never paid money out of my pocket for a game on steam.

Unfortunately, there's a ton of resistance from Publishers to have DRM-free games, so there's a limit to how useful that would be on Steam. Still, it would be nice to have the option, for the Publishers that would allow it.

Steam has some games that are DRM-free. Some of them require you to delete some files or do a small change somewhere but some launch right from the executable without having Steam opened. If the backup copy feature only applied to those games, it would be pretty good already.

Agreed. Personally even just having a way to install those games WITHOUT the steam client is what would earn valve my money. For example, how we will have GoG Galaxy, the GoG Downloader, and a regular download off your browser, THREE ways to download your GoG games.

Yet one way to download steam games? They have a website, surely they could implement the simplest download button in addition to using their client. Would be much nicer to have the freedom of choice.

I don't really see why Steam wouldn't make DRM-free available to developers as an option. They claim they don't want to act like dictators, but they refuse to allow a developer to slap a DRM-free flag on their game.

Because they want people to have to use their client. Its generally in their best interest for people to use their client as much as possible, which is why you're able to add non-Steam games to the client.

You'd still be using their client to download/install/launch the game, they'd just be letting you know that you're free to copy the game to other hard drives or play it offline without issue.

It is an option already, since a number of games are completely DRM-free on Steam. Most developers choose not to go that route however.

I know that some games are DRM-free. The issue is that Steam refuses to allow them to be indicated as such in a clear manner on the storefront.

They'll probably kill off the GOG downloader and integrate its functionality into Galaxy... it would make sense for them to not maintain two separate pieces of software. They'll leave the web download because some people really like it (I've used it on rare occasions when I just want to show a game at a friend's house and don't want to install the downloader beforehand).

They already said they won't be disabling the GoG downloader. It and the downloading system of GoG Galaxy are entirely separate.

I don't remember that. I do remember an email about a "fair price package" when they implemented that though.

True enough. I don't mind the Steam client, so I always forget that's something one can do.

"Personally I think steam needs the "Backup copy download" feature more than anything. "

It' has for a long time. Right click game in your library and you can see the option there.

But not the way I want it. I want GoG's DRM-Free backup installer.

Specifically for the DRM Free aspect.

I just want valve to get their grubby little hands off my games.

Download files from Steam, same as you would from GOG, then use https://bitbucket.org/Du-z/steam-backup-tool/wiki/Home to make your own backup/restore to have your own installers anytime you want.

I already downloaded it. I'm loving it so far. Sure, it can use some work but I'm sure it will only get better. All they need to do is convince more indie devs to publish on their platform, i don't rly care about AAA titles since i rarely buy them.

installed it again....looks like a half year ago. It´s ok...but there is still no benefit compared to login direct via browser @ gog....in fact, the client ist slower....
(but ok...maybe in the future there will be some features, like some multiplayer features)

The last time I tried the client was last week. You still couldn't download games with it, and basically do virtually nothing at all. Has this changed in the past few days?

As interesting as it is, it is still a cut rate version of http://evolvehq.com too bad that one never took off though.

I installed all the free games you get on GoG + Rise of the Triad + Witcher 1 and they all installed fine. The DOS games have a little configuration utility, that's really cool.

Well, steam is going to be cheaper, but there are games like the Witcher 1 and 2 which provide you with gog keys, just like EA gives origin keys for their games on steam. Got DA:O on steam for a great price and playing through origin. Same for witcher, you get it over on Steam or Origin (Origin actually had a better sale for Witcher) for that monster sale of 5€ collection and you activate it on GoG. You start using their website, you realise it has an interesting design and you can download the installers of all your games on an external hard drive, you do that, you find more games, you forget about steam, more people come along, publishers realise the 2% extra they could get from gog, they publish the game there, more people come along, the 2% turns into 20%, people stop buying games with DRM, everyone buys retail or GoG-type digital, the digital world no longer needs hackers for cracking games, half the piracy websites go down, Ubisoft goes bankrupt.

On the other hand, retail games won't come with GoG activation, since that's used as a DRM for most games, so our DVDs will probably also meet some evolution now.

About Ubisoft, I have 2 retail game collections/packs with their name on it. They have no authentication, no need to play with the CD in, no registration (no registration required, but optional). They seem quite DRM-free
But on the digital world, they are... French...

Edit: Steam has a monopoly over games that are 97% off and under 5€ thanks to trading cards, so everything above is a lie.

Sure, one morning I get up and forget that I bought about 1600 games on a platform just because some other is prettier.
And then the sky will open, God will come down and punish the bad people in the game industry, and on that way, some terrorists, rapists and youtubers gonna be exterminated too.

Man, the only advantage you have expressed is the possibility of putting the game on an external hard drive. I do not even have a laptop or friends. I understand the concept of DRM-free and I support it, but the rest of your message it's an Utopia.

Well, it is not impossible.
A more realistic scenario would be Steam adding to the features of the game "DRM-free" and we would be able to launch those games without Steam and grab their client whenever we want to install however we want.
An even more possible scenario would be GoG doing some deal with Steam for the "DRM-free" games and the ability to redeem them on gog, like we can with some Gamespy games, or the Witcher series.

Actually I love using the Steam client because my friends know why I am playing and they can join to my party or send me a message. Apart of the achievements, profile personalization and that shit.

Anyway, I know some people does not like that and maybe they are moving a lot and want to put the games on a pendrive or something. Not my case, but DRM-free it's gonna be always better than any DRM, of course, I'm on that with you, and I hope GoG fight a lot with Steam. Competition is the key to make companies improve their services to stay on the top of the market.

Well, GOG Galaxy will provide achievements and stuff, the friends are already implemented, we will get there. But you can also remove those features when going offline in Steam (I don't understand why would one disable achievements, though).

I actually moved away from piracy when I bought it on retail because of cloud sync and the 1-click install (installing Skyrim with DLCs is a pain in the ass without Steam).
I made a promise that day, if I ever want to pirate a game, I always have Skyrim to play and keep me away.

I have the alpha and it already looks quite good, I'll have to update, I just have a question, where I can submit suggestions? I've only found a bug tracker 'cause I'd love if there was a way to limit download speed, I don't know if they already added that to the beta :)

You can submit suggestions in the bug tracker by choosing "feature" as the severity.

Crossplay
Crossplay-enabled games offer online play between GOG and Steam. Because where you buy your games shouldn't prevent you from playing with friends.

Now this is another reason for me to get into this! It 's so irritating when you have a DRM-Free game and you cannot play it online with someone who has it on Steam

I joined the alpha and it's cool. I personally missed the game time tracking and the friends chat. Luckily those have been added during this public beta. Now the only thing I need are friends to chat with and a personal profile page like Steam has.
