"Before you can sell or list more than 200 items in a calendar year, we are required to collect certain information from you." - Steam Marketplace

I was just wondering if there is any wrong answers to their survey/questions? It starts off asking if I am a US citizen, if I say no, do I not get to list more than 200? Basically, do I just be completely honest, or is there certain honest answers that would end up screwing me?

If you aren't an US citizen and truthfully answer no, you can in fact start listing items again.

Unless you've attempted to pay with a us address in the past. (ie: prepaid usd credit card)

Then if you answer no, they'll want a bunch of documentation from you to prove you're not an american.

If you aren't an US citizen, just click the option for that, they won't ask anything special if I remember correctly. Then you can list more.

that seems to be the idea behind the extra information they are asking for.

Strange that it is a number of items and not profit, as many items are only worth .04 cents, others are worht more than 200 times that.

Yes and no. Steam is required by law to collect the info once you hit the 200 sale mark. If you sell 200 items and made $20,000 from all those transactions, then yes, you are required to pay taxes. Valve is not required to share this info with the IRS though.

This is coming from the community marketplace's FAQs

Is there a limit on the number of transactions I can participate in in the Community Market?

Currently there is no limit on the number of transactions you can participate in. However, the United States Internal Revenue Service, under Section 6050W of the Internal Revenue Code, requires us to collect certain information from you if you engage in more than 200 separate sales transactions in a calendar year. In particular, if you are a U.S. citizen or resident, you will need to provide us with your name, address and Social Security Number, and if you are not a U.S. citizen or resident, you will need to provide evidence of your non-U.S. status on an online form we provide to you. We will be providing a link to these forms and a process by which you can provide the needed information if and as you approach the 200 sales limit. We may use a third-party to collect this information. You can choose not to provide this information if you wish, but you will not be able to list any items for sale in the Community Market once you meet the 200 sales threshold, and any items listed will be removed. Note that, while we are required to collect this information from you, we are not required to share this information with the IRS under Section 6050W unless you exceed $20,000 in gross sales in the Community Market within a single calendar year. For purposes of calculating the number of sales you have made in a calendar year, all of your accounts will be treated as a single account.

OK, so basically only US citizens need to sign up. It is strange that they are even asking me, as my profile already states I am not a US citizen.

I can answer nonsense too, though. But in this case it appears like I am lucky that I am a Canadian (I have had to tell Amazon that I am an American a few times, they tend to get all the good stuff).

That might not be steam's fault, in this area, they appearntly have to nag you about being old enough every time by law (it gets REALLY annoying on the 3ds, especially when the store software keeps crashing)

enhanced steam answers that for me in firefox (it's available for chrome as well). i have no idea how old it tells steam i am, but since it really only wants to know if i'm old enough (and i am) i don't really care.

The answer will only be saved as a session cookie.
If you restart Steam/your Browser, it automatically gets removed. That is why you have to do that over and over again.

I hit this block too. I can't sell anymore cards because I'm under 18 and my mom wouldn't even think about entering my SSN for a "gaming site"

Same here.
I don't want to give them all my info so I guess I'll just have to wait until 2015.
