You can click the Co-op or a similar tag on steam to see the list of titles matching that tag.
No particular low-spec recommendations on my end.
If you consider borderlands 1+2, or castle crashers low-spec, you can try those.Or you can go more retro an play something like Quake, Unreal tournament or Age of Empires.

I am aware of this, i've been a member of steam since it was established
the trouble is just scrolling through those lists doesn't really tell you much,
i would much rather a public opinion on games people have played and enjoy here

You can use this to do the same thing with your game library, since you may already have some games matching those tags.

The first ones that come to my mind without searching for games are (excluding games like the most played multiplayer games and mmos) Borderlands, Clandestine, all the zombie games you can find, Resident Evil, some CoD games, Hunted demon's forge, Serious Sam, top-down games like Torchlight 1 and 2, Painkiller, all those survival type games flooding the steam store etc.

I have beaten the borderlands games with my friend on xbox, we spent a lot of hours farming legendary weapons xD,
i even love the telltale game that they made,
Unfortunately the friend i want to play with doesn't like anything to do with zombies, if i even mention the walking dead he cringes lol, i absolutely love the resident evil series though, i've played 1 through 5, and streamed the rest,
resident evil revelations was pretty fun to play co-op with my other friend, thanks for you recommendations :)
