Well have you heard of the ones I mentioned? Winter Wolves made Heileen games, Spirited Heart, Always Remember Me.

I haven't played as many as I would like, but the more recent one I really liked was Magical Diary.
Though I really liked Planet Stronghold, the VN part was the weakest and the meat of the game was the RPG part. The VN part wsn't bad at all, it's just that the story is quite generic.

I just rememberd it. Cinders is a rather great VN with beautiful artwork and nice OST. The story is a really nice mature Cinderella twist.

There are SO MANY visual novels from Japan, such as Steins Gate, Clannad, and Fate/Stay Night. Yet visual novels isn't just a Japanese genre. There are many good visual novels outside of Japan, specifically those made by Winter Wolves (Italian developer), Christine Love and her visual novel series (Canada), and Sakevisual and the Jisei series (United States).
My favorite visual novel so far is Cinders by Moacube. It takes a very well-known Western fairytale and places a more adult spin on it. That and the art style is not the standard anime style and there are actually seemingly endless combinations. I put many hours into it, and still haven't experienced the entire game yet.
On the side of free visual novels, I found this one interesting: http://taarradhin.cyanide-tea.net/ This dev has developed several games including this game, Ristorante Amore, and Nachtigal, all of which I have enjoyed. Tarradhin in particular had an interesting plot and art style. If you like this game or want similar types, check out this forum and their annual NaNoRenO competition: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewforum.php?f=11
So what are your favorite non-Japanese/Western visual novels (free or commercial)?
