Did PewDiePie save gaming by introducing it to 12 year old fangirls, or ruin gaming by introducing it to 12 year old fangirls?

He isn't important enough to have affected gaming as a whole, you give him too much credit. As for my opinion, he has ruined some of wider society's perception of gaming, because of his ridiculous popularity on Youtube.
I'm ok with him and his stuff generally, I just don't think he is the best ambassador we could have. It's not the right image.

He rose the LP industry, much more people started doing it. (I think)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

He wasn't the cause of the rise of the LP community, but a product of it

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then what was the cause? In every industry the success of someone will bring more people into that industry.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know what the cause was as I don't have any statistics. Maybe MineCraft, since it's one of the best selling PC games of all time, and all of the "marketing" was people spreading the words to eachother. Then, as some people began uploading MineCraft it brought more people to YouTube. But then again, most people (the ones that I know about at least) started with CoD, so that must have been a pretty big factor too

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe he wasn't the sole factor of the rise, but he was a big benefactor, the more the person is successful the more people it would bring, it was like that from the beginning of civilization.

This is just going to turn into a discussion about how you interpret the fact that YouTube LP's has become huge. Can we at least agree on that LP's are becoming huge?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I don't care about LPs, never watched a single one of them. My only point was that a success of someone in an industry always driven other people to join the same industry as well, and PDP is one of the most successful of the LPs (Actually he is the only one I heard of which points ts his successes), that's all.

I know this is old, but I wanna correct you. You must be new to the LP community.

If anyone, ANYONE could be accounted for as to assisting the rise of LPs, it would be ProtonJohn, NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy. These guys were around when it began, and helped it to be what it is today. As stated before, PewdiePie is a RESULT, not a factor

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"You must be new to the LP community." I'm not new because I'm not even in it.

Again, I haven't said that he was the initial start of all of it, I said he contributed a great deal to the rise of number of people doing LP. Or you gonna deny the fact that success of someone gives more promise in the industry for other people who are interested? Or you gonna say he is just like any other LPr and isn't one of the most successful?

Gaming isn't an underground activity that should never be mainstream. It's an art and everyone should know it and enjoy it.

When I think about the gaming industry something very serious and engaging comes to mind. But he takes everything as a joke, where as sometimes is not even funny and he over reacts stuff a lot which is annoying. Kids usually watch his stuff and gives a bad example on how a game should be played. If I want to watch a clown I go to a circus and it's more fun.

GG pew you just f***** the next generation of kids

The guy's merely an entertainer, he does nothing for the videogame medium. People find him funny or not (I'm in the "not" part, but that's okay -don't like, don't watch). His games are all the same to be honest, typical low-quality horror genre (Slender-like games have to be produced in a assembly-line manufactory, my God there are thousand of them), though he widened his catalog I believe, starting with To the Moon and other stuff. But that doesn't make him important for gaming in any way, in my opinion.
