if you want it for big picture:
a) you will NEED windows 7, not xp, as xp does not allow for a large enough string packets (put simply, each string packet on xp holds 8 characters assigned either a 0 for not in use or a 1 for in use. this is known as an 8-bit packet. windows 7, however allows 24-bit packets which drastically increase possible output communications between hardware and software.)
b) 16-bit string packets are used for steam's Big picture, yes you can modulate it so that it will use 8-bit strings like what they did for halo 2, however, have fun doing it yourself as no-one in their right mind would do it for a constantly updating, always online program as by the time they get it working it will have been updated at least twice by steam services, therefore being rendered useless.
c) the ONLY reasonable use for steam's big picture is if you use a CRT screen in which case good luck getting it to even connect. every LCD, plasma or LED TV made within the last 2 years has at least a DVI VGA port or a HDMI VGA port as a standard so you should just hook the pc directly through that instead as you can still use a gamepad the exact same way. the reason no CRT monitors were included in the list above is because they were phased out of manufacturing roughly 4 years ago and companies who didn't phase it out at that time suffered heavy financial loss and are no longer a common household brand name any longer

The linux answers are the best. Dual boot some current Debian base OS, such as Ubuntu or Mint, along with Windows XP. You should be able to run just about anything available within the limitations of your XP-era hardware then.
