Played it after it first came out in 2001. I still have a physical copy and a steam copy but can't manage to get the game to run on W10. In my opinion, it's one of the best RPGs ever made really.

Somehow I've never ever played any Deus Ex game despite the fact that I'm old enough and a fan of cyberpunk. My plan is to play both the original game and Human Revolution this year. Hope I will get it to run. I'm so excited already, my expectations are very high.

The only other suggested game I've played so far is STALKER SoC, 9/10, love it, great game, fantastic setting and atmosphere, some technical flaws. The only FPS I like even more is STALKER CoP, 10/10.

DE is most famous for its prediction of the destruction of the WTC towers and that elements in the government would attempt to use the attacks as an excuse to impose a global police state.....

That's not a spoiler, that's the opening scene published years before it happened.

Many people didn't play the sequel that dug deeper into the story because it included a complicated physics engine that bogged down systems of the day. That's a shame because it explores the nature of celebrity, corporations and what people sacrifice for success.

There's patches around to fix it and to enable wide screen support.

There's even an attempted fan remake with new textures, etc.

Can we please discuss about Night in the Woods next time? It's so awesome that even words can't describe. Sorry for the spam.

I agree that the game is a masterpiece (despite the lack of gameplay during the "main" game), but it's probably a bit too early for that, I don't think enough people played it yet :/

What do you mean when saying "main" game? Also, why do you think it lacks gameplay?

By "main" game I mean the town and character scenarios outside minigames. The platforming is just there as a way to get from point A to point B. There are no puzzles and it's not challenging at all, it just adds verticality to the areas.

great then, still great now.
invisible war was a real piece of consolized shit compared to the first one.
i still haven't gotten around to actually play the new ones. guess the invisible war shock still isn't fully healed yet.

Absolutely excellent (8).

Gameplay (8): The level design, skills system, different options to resolve problems, all of this is great.

Accessibility (7): Easy to get into, as long as you know how to use a keyboard and mouse (fun fact: when I played it for the first time, I didn't, and mapped movement to arrow keys instead of WASD :/).

Story (8): Good branching storyline, competent cyberpunk atmosphere, fun characters. The voice acting is kinda campy but I love it, it's hilarious.

Everyone should play the original Deus Ex. Why can't we have good games like this these days? The new Deus Ex games are OK, but still shallow compared to the original. Everything now is all about blingy graphics and action, if you're lucky they might throw in a little story.

I was just thinking about this game the other day, probably because I just finished Mankind Divided a few days ago. I almost missed out on the original Deus Ex. The developer and/or publisher was promoting the hype about Daikatana and when it bombed, I didn't even give Deus Ex a second look when I saw it was by the same people. Then a friend of mine loaned me his disk and told me I had to play it. I was in college at the time. I could not stop playing it, and my grades took a hit because of this game.

I've lost track of how many times I've bought and played it. My friend wanted his disk back when was done with it, so I bought it for myself. Back then you used to be able to trade in PC games for credit toward new games, and I eventually traded it in to be able to buy a new game. The PC I had when I first played it could hardly play it on medium, so later when I built a new one I bought it and played it again. I think I might have traded that copy too to buy another game (I was a broke college student still). I later found the GOTY edition in a bargain bin a few years later and bought it again. It was the original GOTY, with the sound track on CD. I still have the box and the cardboard jewel case, but I can't find the disks. I found myself wanting to play it again (this was before it was on Steam or GOG), so I ended up buying it on Ebay. I was a little disappointed when I only got one disk and no sound track. I was about to leave bad feedback for false advertisement until I learned they re-released the GOTY without the sound track. I insta-bought it on Steam when it was available, but Steam's "GOTY" also doesn't include the sound track, so I bought it on GOG when they had it because it's the true GOTY edition with the sound track.

I don't know why, but one of the most memorable moments in the game is the part when your brother's kill switch is activated and you go to his apartment. When MJ12 comes for him, he tells you to leave. When I first played it, I was like "no bro, I'm not leaving you." Then the door gets blown open and the MiBs and troops started flooding in. I tried to fight them off, but there were too many, so I say see ya bro and bolted. Then later in the game, you have to go retrieve something from his body. The second time I played it, I knew what was coming, so I set up mines in the door and stood my ground, but they just kept coming. I ran out of ammo, so I figured it was scripted and they would just keep coming and there was no way to save him. Then later when I go to find his body, he was alive this time! On my third game, knowing he could be saved, I stocked up on ammo, grenades and mines before this mission, and I was not leaving. This time I did it. It was a hell of a battle, but I fought off the entire horde.

Gameplay: very good, with options to play it any way you wanted. The main problem was me -- I kind of wanted to enter every location by all possible ways in the same play-through, and that just was not the way to play it... :D

Story: Very good, with lots of twists and turns, and a nice ending. What made the game was the little details, and how the story adapted to major and minor decisions you took.

Like, that death was not scripted?!? What the heck, so I cowardly let that person die?!?

Music: excellent, very sci-fi-ish! But I have to say: the voice acting was at times horrible.

Graphics: ok for the time, of course dated today (unless mods).

Overall: 8.6/10.
