GOG offering DRM free games is nice and such, but do people really buy and play games on GOG?

Personally I only use Steam. I won the division with my new GPU long ago but it was on uplay so I didn't even bother.

Do you use, play and buy on a different platform than Steam on a regular basis?

Regular basis no. Very rarely I have played on origin (dragon age inquisition) and gog (dungeon keeper 2) The problem is, steam got us by the balls. The competition only truly appeared (ie: a meaningfull library) when we already had extensive steam collection.

Exactly, and steam just looks and works so much better than most of the others and we don't have to worry about them going bankrupt and loosing all our games

On GOG you can backup your DRM-free games :)
Anyways I often play my GOG DRM-free games on Steam as non-Steam games, I don't get achievements, but I don't care that much actually.
I also use Battle.net (not really a competitor, but you know, hearthstone is there) so I guess I should list it too.
On the other hand Origin is the only other platform I used (barely) to play games (I'm on Linux and the total lack of support for the platform doesn't make me happy).

For Ubisoft games that require Uplay, I prefer to have them there, because I don't want to keep open two clients (Steam and Uplay)

yeah but if I install a game on steam that requires U-play, then I have to have both steam and Uplay running - install on Uplay alone and only Uplay has to run - no steam stealing resources :) - that is what I did for some of the AC games - but not all - as my comp is starting to age and resources are scant - I think that is what Desmight meant?

It has potential its the balancing is a big issue for me.
I will just use roadhog as a example he has 600 hp and is able to one shot unlike reaper who has 250 hp.....
Also the hitboxes are stupid u get a hanzo that shoots a arrow like 1 meter above u and it counts as a headshot.... they fixed this but they are bringing it back again...
Also the servers were bad but they are fixing that now.

Hitbox got adjusted, and they aren't bringing it back.
Also Roadhog oneshot almost only if he menage to grab you, and the problem is how the grab work, not Roadhog itself.

Ow really didn't know they were removing it now (again?)

Roadhog one shots with his right click alone :)
Just test it on training dummies

Right-click 1shot almost never happens.
Given the fact that you know how to position yourself tho

Also with the current meta Roadhog is almost unplayable.

Edit: Hitbox were reduced some times ago and never reverted. Now they're speeding up hanzo projectile speed but the hitbox won't change.

Yeah but Roadhog is easily killed at range with a few McCree headshots and even if you can't kill him, he's essentially an ultimate generator. Reaper is very capable of one shotting people and he can literally become invulnerable.
TBH, I'd say they're more balanced than you give them credit for.

Hanzo is totally bullshit though, I'll give you that.

Yeh ok maybe its not that crazy but i still think tanks do way much damage for the amount of HP they get ofcourse they have bigger hitboxes but still

A good hanzo is like a good widowmaker, a total nightmare.
Tho you'll notice that most players won't pick hanzo against premades because either you're really good or you'll have a really hard time, also till next patch widowmaker outperform him.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The problem with Hanzo is the potential for feeling like shit. He's the only character capable of one shotting people without seeing them, Junkrat can damage people around corners, but his projectiles are slow and don't have the chance to OHKO you.

Hanzo existing makes me not want to play the game, it never feels like I get killed by him via skill, always luck. For all the hate against Bastion, at least he has to aim at you.

Edit : The main problem with hanzo is that the scatter arrow can still headshot, I don't think they changed that.

I get it. But there are some cases where "forever" simply exists. I truly dont see any competitor getting steam share. What can they offer? Low prices? Steam discounts are pretty good at 75% off (specially for me, who lives in Brazil). I am not exaggerating that lots of people (not me) prefer to pay a little more to have on steam than other places. They would need to offer it for free, which isnt sustainable.

And this is the thing: its a fact that people want to have all their games in only one plataform. There is a resistance even if something better comes along. I dont see how competitors can beat that, unless they give away ALL games that they own in their plataform (also not sustainable. Gog have done with some games though)

A historical case of a system failing to exist indefinitely?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

We wont live indefinitely.... a case where a newcomer service defeats a near monopoly when money is involved. I can think of technologic races where the newcomer had a distinc superior quality but like I said steam provides a lot of services AND low prices. I dont see players leaving their extensive steam library behind for a service that offers equal things. It would need to be a big incentive to do so.

There are other ways for Steam to disappear then only through losing customers to competition. It could just be discontinued at some point or maybe the servers all get a crash from which it is impossible to recover (very unlikely though). There are a lot of ways Steam can just disappear.

I'm with doctorofjournalism on this one. It's foolish to believe that a system will last forever. Sure, Steam probably won't go away anytime soon, but at some point (even if that is decades away) it will go away.

"It could just be discontinued at some point"
Without reason? I really, really, really dont think this could happen. Only if people stop developing games.

" servers all get a crash from which it is impossible to recover"
They would just buy new ones.

"There are other ways for Steam to disappear then only through losing customers to competition"
Give me a better example. Cant think of none realistic enough though. Like I said the main point why I dont believe it its that most people DONT want to switch from steam even if a competitor offer them better service. How many companies can you say that?

Even if the US government decided steam was too big and took measures to curb its monopoly I dont think they could do much, people would still want to use it. EDIT: After reading this I changed my mind, they could do some damage. But they havent done anything in years and theres still google and amazon to worry about. Another way would be a crazy person intended on steam to fail became its CEO and changed steam very nature by charging developers 4 times more than they do, made tech support even worse and saved money on servers making them go down all the time from being over capacity. And that situation is ridiculous to even consider, since they are swimming in money with current conditions.

Microsoft decided to wall in their system further preventing steam from working? That would also prevent most games and applicatives from running. People wouldnt switch.

"It's foolish to believe that a system will last forever."
Well I am a huge fool! To me steam is in a situation that makes them very likely will go on barring any extraordinaire acts that frankly wont happen.

If Valve goes bankrupt Steam will be sold to another company. It's their biggest asset. So there are 0 chances we would lose our games even if Valve goes bankrupt.

But let's say Steam dies too.The amount of people that would be pissed off will be legendary. Thus leading me to believe they have a back-up plan for that.

Anyway if Steam dies they would create a huge power vacuum and people will flock to offer another platform. They would even be so crazy to replace Steam by hosting their game libraries.

Anyway,it's more likely for an asteroid to hit Valve's servers and destroy our games than Steam to die.

I buy and play games from GOG. To be honest, I actually prefer the GOG-Version, because it's DRM-Free and a lot games come with extras like soundtracks or manual. But unfortunately GOG doesn't offer as much games as steam. I use Uplay too, but not that often. I have some games on Origin, which I got for free, but haven't played them yet, because I have too many good games on the other platforms.

But yeah, if I buy games it would be in this order:

  1. GOG
  2. Steam
  3. Uplay

Uplay till now only that which came with Steam / Humble Bundle / for free. but South Park could be the first

Steam is my main platform, if I can play it on steam, I'll do that.
But I have no issue if I need to play a game somewhere else, I have accounts on GOG, origin, uplay, etc; but my libraries on those services are minuscule when compared with my huge steam library. Heck, even my secondary steam account is larger than my GOG, origin and uplay libraries convined.

I was thinking about the same, but if you don't have the installer for GOG's game, it's useless as well. And while most people don't know about it, you can backup Steam files as a compressed one ( I think while leaving the original installed as well) and re-install it without internet any time. I think it's about a case-by-case "Do I need internet to run this?" question, as there are quite a few games on Steam that has always online DRM, while GOG doesn't have them by definition.

Nah.. not on a regular basis. I have the Mass Effect Trilogy, which I want to play sometime on Origin, but only because I couldn't get part 3 on Steam. EA and Valve/Steam are not good friends. Luckily the Mass Effects bought on Steam could transfer over to Origin using the cd-key or whatever it is called in the game properties menu. I have a few games from bundles that I don't have Steam copies of also, like Dragon Age 2, I believe... Of course, Origin doesn't do the same thing in return to add the to Steam, that I know of. I put some other Steam games over on Origin though, since they do have a small list of games that will transfer over. Only a few examples where I would go out of my way to play games on another platform.
Those are the only two I personally have, but I don't use GOG or Uplay much at all. I have Planescape Torment on GOG though, which I almost forgot about... I need to finish that one up! I forgot, but I think I have some games on Uplay that I don't have on Steam also. The free games on Origin each month or so are nice to add, but I can't ever find time to play games I paid for on Steam, much less Origin's 'On The House' games.

I'm going to say yes, even though I use Steam much more, because I do use other clients often enough that I think it counts. GOG is convenient, and although I miss some Steam features, it's great if I want to play a game undisturbed by DRM or always online. Battle.net got me with Overwatch. Origin Access interests me, though I can't justify paying $5 a month indefinitely for EA's meager catalogue, but I'll keep an eye on it and see if they grow past 30 games; otherwise I might sub once in a while, like over the summer when I have more free time, and skip on actually buying EA games. I do enjoy the Sims, and so the 10% off for their membership makes grabbing DLC on sale and tossing in some pocket change for a month of whatever EA put on Origin Access isn't a terrible deal to me. Ubisoft had me using Uplay for a while with Siege, but for some reason I just sort of burned out on it, despite the fact that it's a fun game.

I have one Steam game each that requires Uplay and Origin, both ran fine without any problems, but I've never purchased from either of those services and probably never will. (Incidentally, both services have given me a "free" game and neither of them worked lol.) GOG, on the other hand, has classic games not available on Steam, so I've bought maybe 30 of them and still have a few on wishlist. I also haven't had any problems with the Galaxy client. Steam is still my main client though.
