It may not be super fast, but it's easy to use and never failed me.

It generally takes a long time to burn a dvd, its a lot of data to burn to a disk,
just think about dragging and dropping the file somewhere, even that takes time,
im not sure about programs as i have not burnt a disk in forever,
but the speed is determined a lot by the speed of your dvd writer/drive,
i would try other formats before dvd personally, a lot of dvd players will play avi files.

I had trouble for ages trying to burn things to DVD, I finally used the DVDVideoSoft application, it's got a ton of other cool little programs too all in one little "studio" interface. Link.
