So, I got some free time after finishing my project and I noticed that Warframe and Path of Exile both got a new update.

I know that both of them are a completely different genre but I like them both and can't decide.

PS: I haven't played any of them before.

path of exile is fun but has weird economy. warframe is also addictive and you progress no matter how much you play each time which is cool. i would say warframe.

I actually like the economy of PoE. Sure, it's not easy to get into. But there are plenty of helpful sites and services and then it's a blast to make good deals. ;)

Both have really good free 2 play models. I'm not that familiar with the devs on Warframe but GGG have a really good team and were getting advised by David Brevik one of the creators of Diablo 1 and 2.

I will tell you something I wasn't a fan of despite how good of a game Warframe is. Hand gymnastics lol. If you use a keyboard and mouse to play you will feel like you are doing hand gymnastics. If I were to play it again I would want to use a controller.

Personally, PoE seemed to fit my style cause I liked the Diablo franchise, but I will admit the game bored me out easily despite that.
Warframe I never played, but from what I heard it's fun and feels rewarding.

The honest answer though would be that you download both and decide which one you like better.

768 hours on Warframe, 103 hours on Path of Exile; both are fun, both are very grindy, PoE has a lot of lore you can read on the surface as you play (NPC dialogues) whilst WF spreads all the lore throughout descriptions, voice and text dialogs, movies so you have to really dig for them. (Most of the information is through obtaining them with scanning)

WF is easy to get used to, and you can have your own build that goes far in the game, but with PoE you need a reliable build to enjoy end-game content, probably better off just looking your build up beforehand. If you're going to invest time into it, go for PoE, otherwise you can play WF whenever you want and feel accomplished even by little things.

yea the idea of "getting used to" Is my selling point for WF since I have a very short memory when it comes to remembering a gameplay/mechanics of a game after taking breaks from it. Thanks for the suggestion

991 hours on Warframe. Obtained all that worth obtaining. Retired soon after introduction of alertium (nitain exteract).

Frost prime modded to the brim + 6 forma'ed Vaykor Hek + Sonicor + Gallatine with Tempo Royale stance = T4/Sorties easy.

Never again.

Hah, I'm kinda on the same boat right now (except I played both games before). I'm longing for some decent multiplayer/shared world game and I can't decide if I want to go back to PoE or back to WF.
I had a bit of a love/hate relation with WF to be honest, the game as a whole is pretty fine, but there was just so many little things that I found infuriating. PoE is awesome (or at least was awesome, when I played it a couple of years back), but I didn't like the complete lack of visual character customization.

Hmm... decisions, decisions!

Well, personally I feel like Path of Exile got way (and is still getting) more awesome over the years. Visual customisation will cost you dearly though, as it's the primary source of profit for the devs :P

1800h in PoE and around 400h in Warframe here.

First of all, you're not completely right about Path of Exile. PoE gets a big update and a new temporary league every 3 months. This time will come on 7th of December. Right now we're still in the spoiler phase. The developers are leaking some information about the new league, while the current temporary league is running to an end.

You are right about Warframe though, the Fortuna update just (a week ago) dropped and there's a whole lot of content there, but the thing with Warframe is that there's so much content you might even ignore the open world-ish location for most of the time and have plenty to do anyway, especially when just starting the journey.

In the end, I think I'd recommend PoE more, I like their business model more, as you can't pay to progress and real-life money is not really involved most of the time, while Warframe basically allows you to buy in to the end-game. There's also the 'new players tax' in both games. Path of Exile semi-requires you to buy a few stash tabs to be able to trade with other players without too much hassle (there are sales every few weeks though). Warframe in the meantime will always require platinum (the real-life based currency), as you'll always need more slots for frames, weapons, companions, etc. but you CAN make the platinum in-game. Making platinum in the early stages of the game is really hard though and getting some for money at the start is a great way to boost you up a bit.

What's more, if you have 'some' free time, PoE is good in a way that you have a league and then it's over and all your stuff goes to the standard league (which on one really plays), so you can spend time on the game and then after 3 months when you don't have that much time anymore just call it. Meanwhile, Warframe is really rich in content and there's a lot of grinds to be done and some pressure to log in every day and get all the resets on bounties, sorties, daily reward, etc. which kinda draws you in and can be a bit exhausting.

I feel like Path of Exile is a bit more diverse to play, too. There are many possibilities to mod your frames and weapons in Warframe, but most of them you mod according to one of the few ways you always do it (with a few exceptions). In turn, this is PoE's strongest feat. The multitude of builds and skills to use basically never ends, the theorycrafting is one of the most important things there and people spend HOURS in Path of Building (a tool that allows you to preview a build) just trying to figure out what they're going to play next league or finding some interactions between skills and items that make a build viable. This also means, your first (few) character(s) in Path of Exile will most probably be completely useless in the end game and there won't be a way to fix it (rerolling is an option but it'll cost you), you'll have to create a new character and create a better build or follow a guide to get somewhere.

One last aspect is the impact on solo/multi play. Path of Exile is primarily a single player experience. You can even start in a league where you can only rely on the items you find and there's no interaction with other players at all. Playing with others is something you rarely do and if so, you do it in a very specific purpose. Warframe is a game that's really centred around community. By default you'll join instances with other players that are doing the same mission as you.

In the end, both games have really awesome communities and developers behind them so whatever you choose you won't regret it. As you might have noticed I'm definitely more swayed towards PoE as I like the 'new expansion every 3 months' approach, as it keeps the game fresh forever. Warframe in the meantime is a bit barren when you get to the end-game, there isn't really much reason to play once you get a few formas weapons and frames for each type of endgame mission besides just unlocking more weapons/frames.

Both are setting the standards for what f2p game should strive for, so that's awesome. Back when I played Path of Exile (long ago), all the skills were passives. This was kind of a deal breaker to me. I don't know if it's still the same, but because of that, I'd say Warframe.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There was never a time where all of the skills in PoE were passives :P I think you're misunderstanding the concept of the passive skill tree and active skill gems, which PoE is based upon.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm pretty sure all the skills in the skill tree were passives. It was even a main marketing point: "all skills are passive so you don't have to press extra buttons". There may be items that grant active skills, and I didn't play enough to get to that point, but not the skill tree. Not back then, at least.

Yeah, basically what the other guy already said. The passive skill tree is that, passive stats and some quirks. All the active skills are bound to the skill gems that you find/buy throughout the game. You get the first one from the very first mob you kill so I'm a bit surprised you haven't noticed that :P

And it's always been like that, if you really want, I can find the pre-beta PoE trailer where the selling point is actually the fact that your skills are gems and can be linked with support gems to modify how they work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Perhaps what I think of selling point is what some random youtuber said when I watched a video before downloading it, then. But you're right, I did give up on it quickly. What killed it for me was that everything you did in the game had some lag, because apparently everything was server-side. So, even hitting a mob had some slight delay. I remember reading this was fixed, a long time ago.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No problem :P Yeah, that does feel more like PoE :D In the early (and not so early) days the game could only be played on 'Predictive' mode, where the server was only readjusting your position with the client every now and then. Then, some skills would almost always make you desync with the server, making you stuck and often die while you thought you're far away and safe.

This has been fixed though, so if you have a stable internet connection you can just play on the 'Lockstep' mode, where there's no desync. However, the impact of lags is more visible in that mode.

Been playing Warframe nonstop for the last 5 months and can attest to the feeling of progression, even a little, each day. You get back how much you put in basically. The reward to grind ratio is pretty good and the variety of how you kill hordes of enemies is satisfying. That said its' pretty much run and gun, if you want story and RPGnes then go for PoE I'd think.

I really loved PoE's gameplay, mechanics, graphics, settings and lore and it's a fantastic game, but ended up quitting it because I got sick of bullshit deaths in hardcore and didn't want to play softcore. Unfortunately they seem to balance the game around the later rather than former (which I guess makes sense since most of the players are apparently in softcore servers according to some stats I read on their forum a while back).

Warframe I haven't tried because I heard it's a huge grindfest, so there isn't much I can say about that. It seems like a game worth giving a try if you don't mind the grind.

I would highly recommend Path of Exile if you don't plan on playing hardcore servers.

Permalink

Thanks, I will definitely play on softcore servers first.

I wish I just started on softcore and never got hooked on the hardcore. Anyway while softcore isn't as intense and therefore for some people not as fun it has what some consider bad, but some might consider better economy. Basically everything is a lot cheaper there, so gearing up your character through trades is a lot easier, cheaper and quicker.

I would recommend reading (or listening, a lot of things are voice acted) dialogues with NPC's and lore objects. I see some people just try to rush through the game, not paying attention to the story and lore, which is a shame because the game is pretty interesting when it comes to its setting, story and lore.

I haven't played Warframe, so I can't say much about it. Path of Exile has a grim, deep story. I played it a lot in the past, even though the sheer complexity the game isn't suited for everyone. Some don't like the slot-based skill system, where you have to place your skills in an equipment with slots in order to use them. Moreover linked slots allow for creative combinations and a high diversity of spell/skill adjustments that may alter the outcome and effect a lot. If you get the right color slots and if they are linked.
The skill tree is huge and you can explore it more or less freely, with barely any class-restrictions.
There are special seasons that offer new challenges on frequent intervals, so it never gets boring.

Overall it's a tough and challenging game with some decent endgame-content (like creating your own maps with the most hardcore modifiers and then playing them).

1400h in Warframe and 400h in PoE

Both games are great, I'd simply suggest going with the type of game you prefer more. Both games are fine playing solo or with a group. WF will by default match you up with other players for each mission if your party is not full but you can go in alone. PoE is more geared towards a solo experience if you desire that more.

Both games can be played without spending any money, though I feel Warframe is much easier to do so. In the beginning PoE offers the better storage experience but as you get going you are really going to want the additional space and the premium storage tabs make trading much easier. I went over 300 hours before spending $20 on it, though much of that was before the addition of new content. Sadly I left for another game about a month later, oh well.

In Warframe you are quite limited on the number of frames and weapons you can initially store, which is fine if you realize you don't need to keep the regular versions when there are better versions out there. Keep the ones that interest you and replace the others as you go and you should be fine. The beauty of Warframe is that you can trade items with other players for the premium currency and use that to unlock additional space. While you won't have much to offer early on the costs for slots is quite low so it shouldn't be too bad. I really couldn't say as I started playing before trading was possible, which was a long time ago. While you can use the currency to unlock the frames and weapons I feel that defeats the purpose of playing and will eventually sour you on the game. Given enough time you can unlock everything anyway, sell the excess and buy any cosmetics you desire as well. I've never had the need to spend any money on Warframe. They used to have draws for their currency on their streams, I haven't watched them in quite some time, and I believe some of their partners give out codes as well unless they stopped that practice as well.

If you decide on PoE you have a few choices in which league you will play in, standard and hardcore leagues are permanent but there is usually a temporary challenge league that occurs as well. It offers new challenges and thrills but only usually last a few months before being merged with their normal league counterparts, standard or hardcore. The standard and hardcore leagues will have an established economy which will hamper trading if that is your thing, but getting into a new challenge league will open up a lot of opportunities and those items will be moved to the normal leagues at the end.

PoE can be a bit daunting with their skill gems and passive tree, but that is the thing I like the most. You can get lost for hours theory crafting, but there are plenty of guides out there to get you started and most are fairly solid. With their update coming out in a few weeks it sounds like the perfect time to get a character started to get the hang of it and then start fresh in the upcoming league.

PoE is extremely slow, you won't get rewarded for your efforts and skill for a loooong time and most of the things you did before reaching max level will become useless at max level.
Warframe is a lot more rewarding, fast paced and you'll almost have just as much fun in the early game compared to the end game. But ultimately, it becomes pointless to play after a point since there is no goal or an ultimate objective. Once you get a good build, you'll have some fun with it, then most of the gameplay activities will become dull and pointless.

So if you have LITTLE time, I'd recommend Warframe. If you have SOME time, PoE becomes very rewarding and unique after some time in the end game.
