I wonder if there is anyway to know what Steam game is associated to a key? I got a random key in a giveaway and I already had the specific game in my library. Could I create a giveaway here for it? I'm not sure.

Install the steamdb extension and activate it again in your browser

Does this not just activate the key if it isn't already on your account?

If he didn't already have the game, it would. But since Hurrikan said he already had the specific game in their library, the SteamDB extension would add more details, like the sub ID (and hence the name of the game), to the message .... while still not using the key.

no, you just redeem it like you would normally any other key. with the steamdb extension though it tells you what the game is instead of just saying that you already own it.

i think you are wrong here.

if you try a key, and dont have the game, it will activate the game in your account, and display the name and subID

if you try a key, and have the game already, it will not activate the game in your account, and display the name and subID, but it wont say if its a duplicate key (activated on another account)

you're absolutely right, but op said he does have the game. so i'm also right. what a beautiful day.

this is what comes up if you try to redeem a key for a game which you already own, while you have the steamdb extension installed. i'm too lazy to make a screenshot, so imagine that cool orange gradient background behind the next bit of text:

This Steam account already owns the product(s) contained in this offer. To access them, visit your library in the Steam client.
SteamDB - Install - Demon Turf

edit: just realized wigglenose said "if it isn't already on your account" my bad. i was going off op's information.

FTR, except if you own the game, but the key you try to activate it for the same game but for a slightly different edition (it has more dlc, deluxe stuff, OST etc), which has something you don't own, you will double activate. That's how I own EU4 through 3 different keys :'D.

Others have alr answered it for you, but no, it will activate it in your account if you dont have the game. But hurrikan said he alr has the game so it doesnt matter in his case.

Then why not just try installing it on their own account then?

If by installing you mean activating it, yes, that was what i suggested. But you need steamdb extension to know what the game is.

If you won it in steamgifts don't do anything with it, it's property of the creator. Maybe they made a mistake with keys and you basically would steal it...

he said he alredy has this game, it wont activate, how it would be stealing?

Let’s say this happens: I, Akfas, create a giveaway for A Juggler’s Tale, but accidentally provide a key for another game, like Elden Ring. The winner tries to claim it, but they already own the game. If they then use that key for something else, like creating another giveaway, selling it, or whatever, wouldn’t that be stealing?

I won a random giveaway on Reddit, it's not from here.

You could try here (https://steamdb.info/keys/), but you must be logged in first. It will take a while, perhaps around 15 minutes, refresh the page and you should see the game/sub at the very bottom. However, in the rare case the bot doesn't own the game, you'd lose the key since you're basically trying to donate it this way.

I got a similar question, if I may. I used the bot in the past, wanted to use it again today, but I didn't realize I should have logged in first.. Since I wasn't logged in, it didn't tell me the game the key is for. Now when I try to input the key again (while being logged in), it simply tells me the key is already in the database. Is there anything I can do? Besides maybe finding someone with a bunch of games who'd be willing to help me, but that might be hassle for the person.
