I'm not defending SAO, but what put you under the impression it was meant for kids?

I agree. Definitely not for kids, and way too didactic for the average anime viewer. They toned it down in SAO2, though.

Didactic is an excellent word for it. My breaking point was when one character explained item durability to another in painstaking detail for no immediately apparent reason so it could become a plot element later in the episode. Show, don't tell!

Didn't seem like it was taking itself seriously enough at times. It made me rather meh. Also the fact that they just up and stopped looking for a way out for a time seemed pointless: THAT'S THE MAIN REASON OF THE PLOT AND YOUR GOING FISHING?!
The show was neutral for me in terms of performance.

Again, I didn't like it so I'm not defending it, but it's not a kids' show.

"The Dumb Popular One" - Sword Art Online. Cannot be more true! XD
Also, wow, I think I'll bookmark that just to check out if the comedy section actually has something good to offer. Nonetheless, where the heck is Ranma 1/2, Internet? I looked over the chart's comedy section and I can't help but feel like I didn't see it there! I mean... they even mentioned Sailor Moon in that thing... :P

Have you checked out Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit? It's one of those shows I found that did slice-of-life better, even though it's an fantasy action adventure at heart, than most shows that actually try to be all about it. You might also want to check out The Beast Player Erin which is set in the same world as Moribito, but is otherwise a vastly different show with a lot slower pacing and mellow atmosphere. Also another great example of slice of life, but people tend to have a problem with its slow pace as it chronicles one girl's entire life, more or less. Neither is especially dark and both feature interesting female protagonists, though.

The other one is the original in the sense that it came first. For a long time I was under the impression that Brotherhood was a sequel or spinoff.
From what I've seen of both, I prefer Brotherhood, but I'm not really an expert.

Angel Beats!
Sakurasou no Pet Na Kanojo
Shingetsutan Tsukihime in older ones.
I only watched first season of SAO for which I enjoyed first part even though it went maybe too fast and disordered, second part being…yeah, too caricatural. Still I enjoyed watching it and Accel World from the same author (but meh, you want to hit the main character :P)
I heard better comments about the light novels though and especially about the one the author started to rewrite in a chronological order. Maybe will I read them one day

Sword Art Online: Ended up dropping this one on episode 12 or 13 as it seemed like wasted potential. I looked ahead a couple months later to see if people said it was better and i found.....My word why do they put some things in kids shows. Though it already had some stuff that kids shouldn't have been watching in the first place so meh.
Anime are not "kids shows" for fucks sake. Some are aimed at kids, some are not. Action scenes aside, Sword Art Online is an emotional roller-coaster and while it's not perfect it's pretty damn good.

The main plot in itself had some contradicting areas that I just felt didn't really fit in with the whole thing. The aspect of action was there, but the aspect of some other things wasn't. I heard the ending was good though. It doesn't seem to have much emotion at times in some areas and at some points the "lets go fishing and ignore the fact we're trying to get out of this game" type of thing was a bit of an off-putter for me.
There are both good and bad that went with this show, but I got rather meh at about 12 to 13 episode and didn't feel like continuing.
There's also people regardless of what anime that either LOVE it, or HATE it. I'm neutral in this aspect.

How... How young are you?
The whole show is forced and you know it.
The ONLY thing that makes it an 'emotional roller-coaster' is a relationship that was forced in three episode. The other background 'emotional' crap was the death of fodder. You know what fodder is, child? Have you ever watched any Western movie ever? Its the nameless guy that has no background or notable worth. They always die around the 'main' character to make it 'seem' dramatic.
There were way to many time skips to even understand half the shit that happened.
Why was Kirito named the Black Swordsman? What happened to gather his name to spread among those theifs? Afterward, WHY THE HELL WAS THAT NAME NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN? Is he no longer famous? In the same episode as the thiefs, WHY IN THE FUCK DID HE HAVE AN AUTO HEALTH REGEN SKILL THAT HE LATER DROPPED? How in the hell did he live AFTER A MACHINE WAS BUILT TO TURN HIS BRAIN INTO MUSH WAS ACTIVATED 10 SECONDS INTO HIS DEATH? FOR THAT MATTER, HOW THE SHIT DID ASUNA LIVE, SHE DIED MINUTES BEFORE!
Sword Art Online is shit.
The only good thing is an overpowered guy killing things in the boss fights. I have to admit some of them fights were good.

You're calling someone you know nothing about a child only because he likes an anime you don't. How retarded can you be...
I am 23 and like I said SAO is not perfect, there are flaws, but even with those flaws it's a pretty good anime. The "time skips" are really only annoying in the first half of the first season.

Literately the next page, I have a list.
To date I have completed 49 anime series and have a back-list of 46.
Honestly, I don't even have the thoughts correctly formed to explain why I hate this anime so much.
The only thing I can say is that the entire anime is nothing but Deus-Ex Machina, failed harem, and some of the worst story telling I haev ever had the displeasure of seeing.
The anime stops having any serious tone or mood around anything it does half way into the first 12 episodes. Instead of trying to survive or trying to see the eyes of your (incestuous) family again in your life you spend your 16 year old days in a game with a badass Tsundare. Sorry I meant family orientated Yanadare, the anime stopping doing Asuna's personality correctly and made it cannon.
Here watch this.

Only watched 2 minutes of the video and all points were pretty stupid so I didn't bother watching further. It must have took him quite a long time to create that ~40 minute video, a lot of editing. That dude really needs to get a life lol.
Most anime have flaws, I think people should either get over it and enjoy them anyway or just stop watching them altogether.

Wondered if someone had mentioned Darker Than Black; was the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember the name of.
Other than that, go with the obvious:- Clannad.
As well as I'd say Shiki, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (+Kai, Rei is optional, and "Kira" follows a different element entirely, more magical girl), Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic! (the Fumoffu OVA is almost depressingly hilarious, just what the hell?!), Sora no Otoshimono (Heaven's Lost Property) if watching in Japanese, since the films were never translated. Meets pretty much all requirements + cute girls a bonus.
Oh, and of course, Toradora. Damn I need to go back and watch that myself one day >.> For the ... 14th time? Haven't done so for over a year, so doing well. Dx
They need to hurry up and anime-ify the rest of the light novel for Kyōkaisen-jō no Horaizon >.> Only upto two seasons, yet novel - based on how much is covered in the anime so far - has enough for AT LEAST two more seasons. Need to hurry up and meet Nate's mother in the anime!!
Well worth the watch though even as-is. A rather detailed plot surrounding historic re-inaction in a more ... magical/sci-ify? setting. Plus boobs. Lots of boobs.
I could go on forever. Lol... and I don't even watch a lot of what others die-hardenly consider popular, can't stand stuff like Naruto, don't even watch Bleach >.> Goes on too long.

I agree with both of what Y'all are saying, and if I may add
Nichijou- Some people like it some People don't. It is random and Hilarious.
Assassination Classroom- I really like this one!
and Guilty Crown- It is one of my favorites!

So whether people know it or not, I'm a rather huge anime fan. I enjoy anime because it seems fresh, the animation is different from watching a typical TV show. Bright colors perhaps?.....Who knows.
I've been having trouble finding anime that I like because I'm just so bloody picky sometimes. I love intrigue, plot, twists, fun characters, and if possible cute girls but that's only an optional. I love my plots dark and mysterious, though I can't seem to STOP finding these blasted animes that leave me in my room for a week in a depression from the emotion. Anyway, I also don't mind the occasional slice-of-life if it's done to my liking, (list below) but I've never really been fond of the high-school plots much.
Anyway, here's a small list of what I've watched:
Spice and Wolf: The only anime that I LOVED as a slice of life. Currently purchasing and reading LN as they come out. The best female main protagonist that I've ever seen.
Stein's Gate: A pretty good anime that doesn't really pick up until episode 10, but then intrigue steps in. Some of the content was a tad questionable but it let off eventually and I enjoyed it very much.
Psychopass: The plot-line was a tad clique and in that respect it was kinda boring (cops vs bad guy, big evil plot blah blah). The main villain was one of the only reasons I continued. He was just masterful in his concept of human life and manipulation. Sadly, 3rd and 4th season coming sigh have to watch so I can end the plot-line.
Hellsing Ultimate: Character development wasn't very good, but the action and story were quite nice even if they were only 10 episodes. Tad too much gore but I don't mind it too much.
Tales of the Abyss: My first Anime that I ever watched, great characters and story, but I've always liked plots from video games like the Tales Of series so meh. Kinda bittersweet ending.
Valkyrie Chronicles: Again, based off a video game, it's a great story with humor to boot. I love the characters and the story plot. Mainly watched it for the sake of being able to watch the story without having to play the game.
From the New World: This one had political intrigue and morality questions which were enjoyable. The setting was also enjoyable. Really hated the sad aspects which made for great story, but stupid depression that I couldn't shake for days. Also had some random stuff that just seemed out of place.
Fate/Zero & Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works: The most intriguing aspect of this anime was the reasoning behind the fighting. Everyone has there own goals, their own motives, their own unique power that you eventually discover, and more. Fate/Zero had better story and character development, but Fate Stay/Night UBW had better action.
That's it off the top of my head, Anyone think they know a great political, deep mystery, action, steampunk anime? Or an anime that's funny? I've never watched any comedy anime because I'm afraid of the plot missing within. Considered Clannad but.....that emotion thing......I had considered Guilty Crown but it's got mixed reviews but my word the plot and animation look superb. Though I hate lack of character development and plot holes :/
Thanks to anyone who can offer an opinion.
