So whether people know it or not, I'm a rather huge anime fan. I enjoy anime because it seems fresh, the animation is different from watching a typical TV show. Bright colors perhaps?.....Who knows.

I've been having trouble finding anime that I like because I'm just so bloody picky sometimes. I love intrigue, plot, twists, fun characters, and if possible cute girls but that's only an optional. I love my plots dark and mysterious, though I can't seem to STOP finding these blasted animes that leave me in my room for a week in a depression from the emotion. Anyway, I also don't mind the occasional slice-of-life if it's done to my liking, (list below) but I've never really been fond of the high-school plots much.

Anyway, here's a small list of what I've watched:

Spice and Wolf: The only anime that I LOVED as a slice of life. Currently purchasing and reading LN as they come out. The best female main protagonist that I've ever seen.

Stein's Gate: A pretty good anime that doesn't really pick up until episode 10, but then intrigue steps in. Some of the content was a tad questionable but it let off eventually and I enjoyed it very much.

Psychopass: The plot-line was a tad clique and in that respect it was kinda boring (cops vs bad guy, big evil plot blah blah). The main villain was one of the only reasons I continued. He was just masterful in his concept of human life and manipulation. Sadly, 3rd and 4th season coming sigh have to watch so I can end the plot-line.

Hellsing Ultimate: Character development wasn't very good, but the action and story were quite nice even if they were only 10 episodes. Tad too much gore but I don't mind it too much.

Tales of the Abyss: My first Anime that I ever watched, great characters and story, but I've always liked plots from video games like the Tales Of series so meh. Kinda bittersweet ending.

Valkyrie Chronicles: Again, based off a video game, it's a great story with humor to boot. I love the characters and the story plot. Mainly watched it for the sake of being able to watch the story without having to play the game.

Sword Art Online: Ended up dropping this one on episode 12 or 13 as it seemed like wasted potential. I looked ahead a couple months later to see if people said it was better and i found.....My word why do they put some things in kids shows. Though it already had some stuff that kids shouldn't have been watching in the first place so meh.

From the New World: This one had political intrigue and morality questions which were enjoyable. The setting was also enjoyable. Really hated the sad aspects which made for great story, but stupid depression that I couldn't shake for days. Also had some random stuff that just seemed out of place.

Fate/Zero & Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works: The most intriguing aspect of this anime was the reasoning behind the fighting. Everyone has there own goals, their own motives, their own unique power that you eventually discover, and more. Fate/Zero had better story and character development, but Fate Stay/Night UBW had better action.

That's it off the top of my head, Anyone think they know a great political, deep mystery, action, steampunk anime? Or an anime that's funny? I've never watched any comedy anime because I'm afraid of the plot missing within. Considered Clannad but.....that emotion thing......I had considered Guilty Crown but it's got mixed reviews but my word the plot and animation look superb. Though I hate lack of character development and plot holes :/

Thanks to anyone who can offer an opinion.

I need to give Gintama another chance. I tried the manga a few years ago but after 5-10 chapters it just didn't click with me in any sense. But I've seen clips of the anime that were pretty funny.

The director of the show got in trouble lately.

Level E is great comedy with good plot - but you must watch first two episodes to see what it's really about:)
Or Angel Beats - it's sad, but simply worth watching

Samurai Champloo (action), Durarara (action/comedy?), Code Geass (action/drama), Tiger & Bunny (action/comedy), Mirai Nikki (mystery/thiller), Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (action), Detroit Metal City (parody) or Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (comedy/slice of life) are also very good in their genre.

Oh, and if you like Spice&Wolf, I think that Natsume Yuujinchou will be good choice.

The only comedy anime I've ever enjoyed was Cromartie High School. It's set in a high school, obviously, but it's not really slice of life and there's very little continuity beyond the recurring characters. It's more like an absurdist sketch-based comedy.

Log Horizon

those are a must to watch, I'm in hurry, so I only recommend a few.

part of Fate Series:
1st. Fate Zero
2nd Fate stay/night
3rd Fate Unlimited Blade Works (or rather 'alternative story')

graph

on wikipedia there's a lot of it. The plot is totally different.

Fate Zero is a prequel light novel but UBW is the same story from the VN without much edits.

I know the feeling of what it's like to be super picky- though from a different perspective. I'm super picky about my comedies after the first one I ever watched (Ranma 1/2) set a bit too high of a standard (well, ok, actually the Manga set the high standard but the anime led me to read it in the first place).

I can't really say much about dark mysterious plot centric stuff but your descriptions sort of sounds like the descriptions I usually see of Death Note (and Code Geass which people seem to describe as "Death Note with Mechs"). Maybe give that a try?

Mushishi
Kino no Tabi
Both are slice of life. Personally, I didn't much care for Spice and Wolf. Something about it just bothered me.

Cowboy Bebop (Noone recommended this? At least not that I saw) A goddamn classic. Or it should be.

Trigun - Action? Vash is pretty badass from what I remember

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Dark comedy. I enjoyed it.

Hajime no Ippo. About boxing, but give it a chance.

Having a hard time not commenting on other recommendations.
Samurai Champloo is enjoyable.
Same with Paranoia Agent.
One Piece is amazing. Really long though.

Can't leave it alone: Death Note is shit between ~ halfway to right before the very end.

If you're gonna get into anime heavily, you might want to use a site like anime-planet, or I think another one is MAL (my anime list) that let you keep track of what you watch. anidb is useful as well.

Baccano! is really great. It's a mystery anime set in 1930's America and it has a bit of supernatural elements. I would really recommend watching the english dub of this one, it's way better than the original(a couple of characters have less annoying voices and there are a lot of glorious accents).

I don't know if you're into sports anime, but I also recommend Hajime No Ippo. It's one of the best sports anime ever(and also my favorite anime). It's about boxing, it's super hype and it treats dicks like a lot of anime treat boobs.

A website you have to look at for anime is www.masterani.me

As for the actual anime:

Currently watching:
Berserk - A guy carries around a sword larger than he, fighting a war that nobles are trying to stop.

Finished watching(Recommended):
Afro Samurai - Black kid has his dad killed in front of him for a head band he was wearing. Black kid is mad and kills his father's murderer year later.
Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou - Monster girls
No Game No Life - Two NEET siblings get sucked into a game. A war is going about to rage as the two become king and queen.
Overlord - Like Sword Art Online but with an actual plot and actually good
Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation - 12 kids trapped in a school. Kill you classmate to 'graduate' but after a murder they play the game Phoenix Wright.
Hyouka - Childish high school students solve mysteries, van not included.

Wanting to watch:
Monster - 74 episodes so I want to clear away the smaller animes first
Psycho-Pass - No idea what it is but it was tagged Psychological and Sci-Fi
Mirai Nikki - Same as Psycho-Pass but tagged Psychological and Mystery
Gankutsuou - Saw it an a Youtube video and really liked the art. It reminds me of Chowder.
Gosick - Mystery tag, about a ghost ship
Texhnolyze - Psychological Sci-Fi. And the cover picture is a guy with a robot arm
Btooom! - Pretty much just like Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation, a few kids are on an island and must kill each other

This is really just a small list.

I'm watching InuYasha it's 15 years old but so far i'm 96 episodes in and I have to say it holds up very well vs some of the newer anime i've watched.

The story is pretty interesting with some nice twists, it can be a little chessy in parts but that's why i like anime lol.
