I spent lots of hours on the original Sim, I tried to relive some of these memories in Sims 3 but all I got was a half arsed parody of it for housewives.
It seems that the current business practice is to close off the game as much as possible and cash in on downloadable content. I want the old days back :(

I got a copy of the Sims 1 complete collection (comes with all the expansion packs) at a Goodwill a couple of months ago for around $3. I've tried playing the later Sims games, but they just don't compare in terms of fun and just plain goofiness. I love the simplicity, the ease of use, the item descriptions and pretty much everything about the first game. I even found a widescreen patch that mostly works, though it messes up the bottom control panel a little.
Now I can once again give in to my murderous urges by making my unskilled Sims cook in a room full of wooden furniture that has no doors and no fire alarms. Graveyard, you say? Yeah, I have one of those. It's pretty big, lol.

I installed Sims 3 for my gf a few days ago. At the time she could finally play, there were already 10 individual advertised possibilities to buy additional content, for stuff that any modder would have done better and for free for Sims 1. Now she hates EA

I've still got The Sims installed on my PC. I still haven't yet got a Sim to max career level yet (even with cheats like move_objects on), but once I do...I'll let him die...

It would be nice if the Sims Community started a FLOSS game project to create a clone of the game. It could be the best sims-like game ever, with infinite expanding gameplay elements and totally open for anybody to mod/hack.

The original Sims was tied with Sim City 3000 as the game I've spent the most of my time on - and I honestly miss them. Unfortunately Sims 2 and 3 lost a little bit of the magic for me, with an even higher price. And yes, it was awesome to enter those fan sites and get new stuff to show off to my friends who didn't have internet. Tried to look for the CDs but can't find them and they are so good I really don't feel like piracy would be a good answer. Guess I'll have to buy it again sometime soon.
I would love an HD remake and would definetely support it if done.

My main problem with Origin is that they don't carry The Sims 1.
I had lost the main disk and most of the expansions over the years. Found a copy of Deluxe Edition at Goodwill for 3 bucks, what follows is my best guess as to why it's not on Origin.
The Sims 1 was too open, and any jerk with some free tools and moderate MSPaint skills could make as many new skins, wallpapers, floors, and objects as they wanted. The Sims 3 is more closed off. The advances in The Sims 3 make custom content way harder, coupled with making it REALLY easy to just buy single new items with real money. The Sims 1 had fans making so much content for free that certain websites were actually BETTER than official expansions. Sims Slice's Slice City mod could have been an expansion in itself, and it added gameplay elements that I've never seen in a game since (That is, playing god over someone playing god). Seven Deadly Sims had more amazing items than the first two expansions combined, and it was all free and community created.
There's also the third party paid content. Some of it was stupid, like new colors of bed. Some of it was amazing, like the expansions to Slice City, or really, any of Sim Slice's paid content. Imagine EA's reaction if people were selling GREAT content to a modern game without letting EA get a taste of that action. (I'm sure it happens in The Sims 3, but more in the colored bed way than the "manage the bathroom needs of someone playing an unpausable game of Sim City while also controlling how they play that game of Sim City" way.)
Then there's the difficulty of the game compared to The Sims 2 + 3.
Sims 3 - Sim is suicidally depressed? Go buy a book.
Sims 2 - Sim is suicidally depressed? Tell them to have sex.
Sims 1 - Sim has to pee AND take a shower in the hour before work? Welp, they're gonna die within an hour of gameplay unless you cheat, probably more fun to just start a fire so you can start a nice graveyard lot.
In short, I love The Sims 1, but EA doesn't.
