Hello guys,

I'm looking for a new laptop for my father. It'll be used mostly for drawing CAD, word/excel etc, and Internet.

The budget starts at 400€, could stretch it to 500€ if necessary.

Interested in a laptop that sports an Intel CPU, i3/i5/i7. Which one is more suitable?

Also, would an integrated gpu like the Intel HD series be up to the task, or is a dedicated nvidia (preferably) needed?

6gb of ram so it can do tasks easily. Are 4gb of ram enough?

Extra HDD slot for future SSD maybe?

I've heard that Lenovo, Dell, Asus and Toshiba have some decent laptops.

What about these?

  • Lenovo G5070 (i3-4010U/4GB/1TB/Intel HD) - 385€

  • Asus F555LA-XX275H (i3-4030U/4GB/500GB/Intel HD 4400) - 410€

  • Dell Inspiron 3542 (i3-4030U/4GB/500GB/Intel HD 4400) - 417€

  • Dell Inspiron 3542 (i3-4030U/4GB/500GB/GeForce 820M) - 438€

  • Asus F552LDV-SX1001H (i3-4010U/4GB/1TB/GeForce 820M) - 439€

  • Toshiba Satellite L50-B-11F (i3-4005U/6GB/750GB/R5 M230) - 449€

  • Dell Inspiron 15 3542 (i5-4210U/4GB/500GB/Intel HD 4000) - 450€

  • Dell Inspiron 3442 (i5-4210U/4GB/1TB/Intel HD 4400) - 480€

  • Dell Inspiron 15 3542 (i5-4210U/4GB/500GB/GT 820M) - 515€

  • Dell Inspiron 3542 (i7-4510U/4GB/500GB/GT 840M) - 530€

  • Dell Inspiron 15 3542 (i5-4210U/8GB/1TB/GT 820M) - 565€

What do you think about the laptops I posted above? What would you recommend?

I'm open to any other solution.

Thanks for your time! :)

EDIT:

Actually I found the Lenovo G510 (i5-4210M/4GB/1TB/R5 M230 1GB) for 460€.

Not bad since the M series is better compared to the U. Also the laptop isn't destined for gaming, maybe some solitaire and mahjong. :P

It has a second RAM slot so I can always add 4gigs or RAM for 30€ and swap the DVD drive with an SSD if necessary.

Integrated graphics cards are only needed if you are gaming, 3D modeling or doing video editing. I would suggest something with close to 2Ghz of processing, the newer the processor the better. 4GB is the minimum I would suggest, but 6GB or better is preferable. SSD is only really for upper end systems, and if it has a disk drive you can just take that out and put in a bracket for a SSD, you just need an open SATA port/wire. I'm not familiar with the euro or what computer prices are like where you are looking at so I can't tell you if these are good deals, but online is a good place to look and compare. I know several people who have had problems with Dell computers, but I haven't heard of any recent issues. Asus is a good quality brand that I would recommend. I know some stores have certified Asus technicians (you can get the repairs free if under warranty) and most of the Asus products have 1 year warranties. My current job is a computer specialist (sales person/customer service mostly), so I do have some experience with this.

Oh and some people don't know but the large majority of PC's do not come with Microsoft office, but buying a office 365 subscription at the same time usually saves you $20 at many retailers.

i say this. Dell Inspiron 15 3542 (i5-4210U/8GB/1TB/GT 820M) - 565€. i rather take the i5 (which isn't bad) with 8gb of ram rather than the i7 with half the amount of ram.

the other dell is way better with the i7 as you can always add more ram because it has 2 ram slots and you can always store memory on external hdd and the gt 840m is better than 820m

Edit:(answer for the op) intel hd are quite decent you can easy match many AAA of the last year at decent fps at least on low settingsclick and the 840 is very goodclick considering it's a laptop graphic card but you won't be able to play in full hdd at a decent fps all the new games as the 820m is significant worseclick

the only bad thing would be that i7 heat as hell but since it is a U serie it won't happen

You can always add more RAM and it will be much cheaper than changing CPU (if its possible).
But, I checked specs of these CPUs and this i7 is only 2/4 cores/threads. Better look for CPUs without "U" on the end (cause it means its ultra-low-voltage).

although I hate DELL, get the LENOVO or Acer equivalent and make sure the graphic card is an NVIDIA one.
