Depends if you mean the american football or the european soccer, they're two different sports.

I mean the european football, not the american football. ;) You may call it soccer, but its name is football. ;P

It's soccer here. Well, name doesn't really matter, as long as the person you're talking to gets what you mean.

True, that's why I never liked seeing people messing with these terms. If I see a person talking about football, I understand that he's talking about the european sport, not its american version.

Can't really see it as messing around, as not everyone might interpret it as such. Different country, different customs.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But it is. Which countries are calling european football as soccer? USA, Australia, and New Zealand? Did I forget any countries? Now which countries call european football as football? All the others. The name "soccer" is only used in the countries I told you above in order to discern these 2 different sports. So, it is quite normal to see people get confused by people that use the term "football" to refer to the american football. In european football, you use you feet to kick a ball (foot + ball = football). In american football, you use your hands to carry a thing that looks like a canary melon. So, why do americans use the term "football" at all? :/

Technically they are both football though, as 'soccer' is just a shortened form of 'association football' used to differentiate the sport in countries that have other forms of football.

Don't. Call. It. Soccer. Seriously, it's football and has always been football, it's just americans and their 'American Football' which causes confusion, just because they were too lazy to come up with a separate name for their 'sport'.
In terms of sports, I love both watching and playing football, but recently I've been getting back into tennis. :)

About the whole "football" vs. "soccer" thing, I'm afraid you're not entirely correct. The term soccer is an abbreviation of association football, which was the first coined in England in 1863. To quote wikipedia:

The rules of association football were codified in the United Kingdom by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time, such as rugby football. The word soccer is an abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in universities in the 1880s (sometimes using the variant spelling "socker"). [...]

For nearly a hundred years after it was coined, soccer was an uncontroversial alternative to football, often in colloquial and juvenile contexts, but also in formal speech and writing. In the late twentieth century some speakers of British English began to deprecate soccer for reasons that remain unclear; it is possible they mistook it for an Americanism. There is evidence that the use of soccer is declining in Britain. Since the early twenty-first century, the peak association football bodies in soccer-speaking Australia and New Zealand have actively promoted the use of football to mirror international usage and, at least in the Australian case, to rebrand a sport that had been experiencing difficulties. Both bodies dropped soccer from their names.

But yeah, I object to the use of soccer as well (because of reasons). Just call it football like the ROW and be done with it.

+1 So many people are oblivious to this fact. Instead of doing research, people choose to become offended and would rather believe that Americans are the sole reason behind the confusion.

To an extent they are, given they are one of the very few nations to refer to football as soccer.

In a small way, yes, but Americans weren't the first ones to call it "soccer"... and like you said, the US isn't the only country that doesn't call it "football".

Here are a few things that you may wish to read:

Also, feel free to read-up on American Football, and learn about why it's called "football":

I was kind of expecting to be wrong about it being football from the start, but what can you do. ^^
My whole argument is just that Americans should have to accommodate to the rest of the world rather than the rest of the world accommodating to Americans. :D

Click.
On the serious side, I don't practice any sport, but I really like those sports that equalize the poor and the rich. You know, sports that don't need anything to be practiced, like wrestling; athletics; gymnastics; swimming; football. I despise "rich man sports" like golf or anything else that a poor man's son can't try.
Edit:
It should be known that by "football" I mean the one and only true football.

It's a bit rougher, i like it more than modern, especially because there are a lot of short range grabs and disarms that are never seen if youre forced to play far from your opponent.
This is Skallagrim, here it's mainly long range combat (zhogo largo).

Permalink

It really is different! And I see that the entire blade counts to hit (like saber fencing), not just the tip. Probably a bit rough for my tastes, but disarming sounds like fun. Those swords look pretty serious, though... XD

Nope nothing close, its Gaelic football, you can pick up the ball and you have to bounce or "solo" the ball every four steps, you score 3 points for a goal, or 1 point for a point (over the bar)
