...is that after some time you should have a box or a drawer full of various cables and adapters. Pictured below: several USB extension cables and converters, type C cables, a VGA cable, a DisplayPort one, a handful of 3.5 jack extension cables, male to female and female to male splitters, various VGA to DVI adapters and an old USB to PS/2 adapter, microsd adapters and other random junk that might or might not be useful in the future. Not pictured: meters of ethernet cables and some power cables too thick to fit in the drawer.
What's yours?

I thought that the first rule of PC Gaming is: You do not talk about PC Gaming.

I said "one of the rules", not the first one.

You got it backward. The first rule of PC gaming is that you talk about it all the time. The second rule is that you call people who play on consoles "console peasants".

And the third, I suppose, is that you say "PC master race" at every conceivable opportunity? ;)

You would be surprised by how much space can be saved by tying up the cables. It was a complete mess before the clean up and i threw out some worthless cables (like many old SCART and RCA adapters).

move 2 PC to another area of your home and end up with 1 extra power cable. that's what happened to me and still, everything working:-)

I only have an extra mouse and my controller in my drawer. Only ever upgraded my PC once and all the extra cable and wires that don't fit, I gave away with the old PC. Guess I'm not gamer enough XD

Add every hard drive I've ever owned. Yes, all of them.

You should see my box of stereo/video cables. Makes the PC stuff look like nothing...

Ahaha, I've totally been there! Before making a cross country move, I finally got a IDE to SATA converter so I could do a DoD scrub of all but one of old hard drives before disposing of them, then I copied my docs to my newest old HDD and shipped it to my destination as an off-site backup. I can't say I've paired down my stereo & video cables though...

Mine isn't a drawer so much as a suitcase kept in a cupboard, filled with cables of all kinds, including but not limited to:

  • Various cell phones to computer connection cables
  • Audio cables of various kinds including some I patched together myself, from when I used to help people convert old tapes and vinyls to digital
  • Printer connection cables of various kinds
  • Power adaptors for technology that has long since died
  • An adaptor to move files from a camera to an ipod photo. The ipod has long since died, but its legacy lives on

I would throw some of them out, but I just know from past experience, the day I do that will be the day before I need it.

The crown jewel in my drawer of shite is undoubtedly the two boxes of floppy discs for an Amiga I haven't owned for 25 years. God only knows what's on them, no doubt they'll still be there in another 25 years. Hell, they'll probably be buried with me.

After 25 years those floppy disks are probably unreadable now.

They can be okay, had an Amiga 500 and got some second hand floppies from someone and they were still readable.
Think the larger ones were more prone to become unreadable then the smaller ones.

It's a crapshoot though.

A few years ago I got a Kryoflux and started working through boxes of hundreds of old floppy disks from the '80s and early '90s... surprisingly about 90% of them were completely readable. Of the "unreadable" most were nearly entirely readable except for 1 or 2 bad sectors. I've put those aside so I can try with other disk drives someday. I have 4 or 5 floppy drives but only used 1 for the majority of that experiment.

I had a full backup set from 1988 which spanned about 50 5.25" diskettes. It's in some proprietary format and I have no idea what software I used to make that. I'd love to crack that one open and see a snapshot of my PC from when I was younger.

I just switched all of my Ethernet cables from cat5 to cat7, so I have a big drawer of cables now too.

Random chargers for old phones, PSU modular cables, SATA cable and other smaller shit like that. I've thrown away a lot of useless junk as well.

Nothing. Been a PC gamer for 20 years and never had any of these things you mentioned. Don't even know what most of them are.

You don't plug stuff into your computer? Never had to get a specific cable or adapter?

Nope. At least, I've never needed anything that wasn't included in the original package. No extra cables, no adapters, no extensions etc. Basically the only extra thing in my PC is an additional cooler. And an Xbox controller, but I'm not certain it counts.

Mine's not a drawer. I'd say it's more of a pile. I would like to show you a photo, but I'd have to get a wider lens for my camera first. I moved the pile to the garden a long time ago. It's become quite famous, though. A few years ago people from all over the world starting visiting, just to see the pile. They pray in front of it, and once a year - on Bill Gates' birthday - they sacrifice a n00b on top of it.

I got like 8-10 external drives, all with their own power supply and usb cables, but only use 2 actively. So yeah those cables are spare.
For the rest i don't have much, what is worse all the consoles and their stuff.

I don't think it has as much to do with PC gaming as with PC enthusiasm in general. I don't play a lot on the PC, but I have a large part of a room with all kind of cables, old mice, old drives, other spare parts, old laptops, old MSDN DVDs, cover CDs and DVDs from old magazines and whatnot. And yes, there's some gaming stuff there like old DOS game CDs and other old gaming boxes.

I've got a bunch of IDE data and power cables, plus the newer SATA stuff. I could probably toss the IDE data ribbon cables, but anyone who assembles PCs will have the power cables. And face plates, for the back of cases. And lots of screws for mounting mobos. And case fans.
I also have a very useful 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter, for mounting laptop hard drives in PCs for recovery. And more PS2 to USB keyboard/mouse adapters hiding in drawers and mobo boxes, despite the fact that I've been throwing them out any time I find them.

This reminds me that I should probably get rid of those two large plastic bags with ancient cables, adapters, (probably) dead mice and so on; I've been accumulating this garbage since late 90's. Maybe numerous boxes with my adventure games collection on CD/DVD ought to go too, they do occupy considerable space.

My junk drawers, prolly need to clean these out. Got all kinds of USB cables, power adapters, hdmi cables, all that fun stuff. Have another box upstairs full of ethernet cables, routers, and switches.

Scrub, get to my level.

First picture is a drawer in my desk. It's not usually that filled with stuff in such a disorganized matter (I like to keep things around me organized), but I was moving some things around and stored everything there "for now" until I get some more storage space. Definitely looks "bad" though, so an opportunity for a picture.

Second image is a drawer in the workshop where most cables get stored. Third image is my brother's walk-in closet. Yes, these are mostly all used computer/electronics parts. Yes, he actually knows where mostly everything is stored. He must have a mental map of the entire closet, it's the only explanation.

And yes, it's dust on the floor - It is a workshop-slash-office-slash-computer room after all. :P

I have two racks with three drawers each, sorted by type: video, audio, networking, data, power, and misc. :D

Oh, and that doesn't include the desk drawers by my actual PC. That's dedicated storage in a closet. lol
