a genius!

from here: https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/10/banksy-painting-self-destructs/

"According to The Art Newspaper, a copy of Banksy’s iconic “Girl with Balloon” painting was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York City on Friday night.
However, almost immediately after the record-setting bid of $1.1 million was announced aloud, an alarm was triggered inside the frame and proceeded to shred the painting to pieces."

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, the auction house’s head of contemporary art, Europe, immediately after the sale.

It's a sign of the piss-poor times that Banksy is as highly regarded as he is. But when he gets it right he gets it right and then some. This is the best thing since 'Sir Nicholas Serota Makes an Acquisitions Decision'...

I wanna imagine his explanation

"Street art is for the streets and people who live them, not for fu***ng action houses"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Close but no Cigar.
His statement is Art is for everyone, not to a single person.
Since he made the Frame with a hidden Shredder, if the Painting is going to be sold in an Auction, he would click his switch to activate the Shredder and Painting to a certain point.

Exactly, and I totally agree with his point of view.

Art isn't a "something beautiful for my house", but it's a personal vision of the world FOR THE WORLD.

The girl is shattered.
Only the balloon goes the sky.
Buyer's wallet and heart are shattered.

It will be funds to warm up the homeless mind and body that such a story does not reach.
If the buyer reuses the value of a half picture (balloon) for such activities, it will become double happy · · ·.
🎈
Everyone sees the sky.
People lying on the cold ground do not see.
It is the everyday of the world.
Well, the human race will perish.👽

I'm more than a little surprised that a big auction house like Sotheby wouldn't scan frames but ok. Why not? Still lovely art though.

I think that's the point of destroying it... but knowing the art community, the painting will probably go up in value due to it being shredded. ^.^

Cause people with too much $$ are just so bored with having a rich ass life they LOOK for stupid stuff to waste money on. Look up some of this stuff.... solid gold umbrella holder was the worst? I forgot it was some guy at Enron.... I hate people.

"proceeded to shred the painting to pieces"

But it didn't did it? It shredded about half way down, and in a manner that leaves the shredded parts still attached. Even if there was no built in shredder if it looked as it did now it would still be considered art.

I feel like it's become 'trendy' to hate on Banksy, but I actually think he's quite clever and interesting. To each their own, I guess, especially when it comes to art! And I can see how him being clever might annoy people even more, he might be a bit 'too clever' if you know what I mean.

I've liked a lot of his stuff and he definitely makes interesting points. I watched his 'documentary' too. He's a bit of a mindf*ck, but that's kind of the point.

I mean if you can call a urinal art or a messy bed art and we have to accept that it's just somebody's taste (you do you, art people) I prefer Banksy to that. Lots of people don't seem to like that he's rich and makes these statements, but we don't actually know if he's rich at all or much about him. I think being mysterious also brings a lot of hate. Either way, he makes clever statements and he's helped raise the idea of street art to the mainstream, so for me, I'm glad and I really like his stuff.
