I'm assuming we're talking about doing this legally :P I think it might be fun, but I don't think I like the idea of using real money. Perhaps scrap metal could be chips and you could cash in/out through the Steam market? That way people could bet games, TF2 keys or hats or other cool things.

I suspect that in most countries this would still be classified as gambling since, just like physical casino chips, the metal would simply be an interchangeable substitute for real money.

It would involve Valve obtaining and maintaining a gambling licence for just about every country in which they planned to activate the feature.
There are already plenty of experienced and fully featured online casinos and websites offering an existing service. I don't think this idea would be any better than Valve opening up a global supermarket chain.
There are changes we'd all like to see to the Steam Wallet system, but even setting aside practical and commercial concerns, and despite being an enthusiastic player of the game, being able to play poker with my funds is a very, very long way down that list.

Now there's an idea! Just popping into Valvemart to pick up some bread, milk, maybe a magazine for the missus, and a TF2 hat! Spend over $30 and get a discount on your next game purchase. They'd make a fortune, except when milk is unavailable in your region, then you'd have to make two stops and find something else to buy to get that game discount from Valvemart.

:D
Also, trading dairy products with the Russians will get your Valvemart loyalty card permanently banned.

I'd totally buy Left4Bread and Dotaritos at my local Gabenmart.

Why not get into, skype, mumble, teamspeak whatever, and play on an actual texas hold em website or whatever?

lolz
"football is only fun with real people in real life"
"exploring is only fun with real people in real life"
"shooting is only fun with real people in real life"
"board games are only fun with real people in real life"
so you turn into one of THOSE people b/c its something you like to do irl? so now its only qualifiable as fun if its how you do ... mkay. fuck it but, what an ignorant statement. lol@ ^

Um, actually, poker works very differently than any of those other things. Its entire basis is human psychology and the ability to read the signs of human psychology. The rest of those things can work with an AI in a programmed environment. It's ignorant to imply, as you just did, that all things are the same.
I like several of the things on your list in real life as well as in videogames, because I can tell the difference and judge things based on their qualities rather than just assuming that anything is fun when you make it a videogame.

Personally, I agree with you (although, that said, I'd probably enjoy playing online with people I knew). However, the popularity of online poker shows that there are legions of people who want to play it with strangers on the internet.
Different strokes for different folks :)

If Valve made a game where you play poker with Steam wallet money.
Would it be good or bad?
EDIT: Or maybe some other game, like Texas Hold 'Em?
