Luck. But making giveaways will increase your contributor value, allowing you to enter contributor giveaways which usually give you a better chance of winning. :)

You don't need to be online right when it ends. If you win a giveaway it will say so in a green message on steamgifts. After that, you might have to add the giveaway creator on steam, depending if it's a giftable copy or a key.
