Which is better, Sword of the Stars 1 or 2?

I havent played either but I've heard a lot about how 1 is an enjoyable enough 4X game if you like 4X games, but 2 is still a steaming pile of annoying unplayable crap.

Would also be interested to hear from people who have both though.

Sots 2 was better when it was initially released. But unfortunately, the game has gone through many patches and updates which made it playable :(
