I have several keys from a graphics card promotion that I want to give away. They are Steam keys (do not need to be entered on AMD's website) but the cards have an expiration date of May 31st 2013 on them.

I always thought Steam keys could not expire, but I want to be sure before I create the giveaway. Anyone know?

I've never heard of it myself, but some users claim that Steam keys can expire.

If it's GPU promotion ask AMD for new ones. Maybe they'll be okay with that.
I had similar situation but with EVGA. Didn't ask for a key after buying my 580 almost 2 years ago. Asked like 2 weeks ago, was supposed to get Mafia II but they had no Mafia II keys left so they gave me AC III.
Asking gets you things.

I think IGN promos expire, meaning you can get a key only for a short period of time, a month or so I believe. But if you get a key, you can use it later on without a problem. Unless they changed that, it's always been that way.

Personally I never heard of an expired -Steam- key, keys for various promotions that GIVE Steam keys can expire, but these are not the keys you use to activate the game on Steam.

The card that will give you a Steam key does expire on the stated date. Steam keys given from the website in exchange for the key on your card however do not expire

I had an AMD Promo key from buying a motherboard in 2005 or so. It expired several years ago but I recently ran across the slip with the code and it activated just fine.

Steam keys don't expire. Codes used as promotions to GET the keys, do.

So most people seem to agree that Steam Keys don't expire. I think I'll just create a giveaway for a single one as a test and do the others once I'm sure they still work.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Dont forget there are sometimes collisions on keys given out, as they are mostly generated and not taken from a "reservoir". When someone else accidentally gets the same key like you, he activates it and you have no bill to prove where you got this key from, well then your key "expired" as well ..

Keys are generated but they are stored so there won't be duplicates unless key gets send to two retailers etc.

If I'm not mistaken, there were some cards from amd that had a code, which you had to activate on their site AND THEN receive steam keys, and those(the ones for the amd site) expired.
I don't know about steam keys expiring tough.
EDIT: I remember there was somewhere a screenshot with a game key showing expiration date 2999 or something. But take this with a grain of salt,as I can't find it anywhere anymore.

Not if they are legal/betas/alphas. If they are illegal they could not work anymore

I wouldn't take any chances if you are not ready to buy the games for a giveaway winner in case the keys don't work.

Only ones I know about are the keys from Sapphire promotions..

Congratulations! As an SSC Gold member, you have been randomly selected to receive a code for Mini Ninjas from SAPPHIRE Select Club. Activate by June 30, 2013. Your key can only be used once.

BTW I never actually waited til they expired

No, they don't. No matter what some promotion tells you.

The promotions themselves do expire though and you can't get the Steam key for them once it's over.

I once bought the City of Heroes pack on Steam. The game servers were closed down a couple of months later before I even had a chance to install it.
