Hard to find, but Nightmare Ned uses a variety of visual styles. On Steam, you should really check out Lumino City. And the original You Don't Know Jack was a fast and furious gameshow that used words to feed candy to your brain.

Max: The curse of Brotherhood is one of the most beautiful and colorful games I've played. It reminds me a lot of Pixar's art style.

Yeah Flat Kingdoms another paper style game, that actually uses its unique paper style for good game mechanics!
Nintendo definetly has a ton of unique visual games, they dont really care about beefy systems, they know how to use art style in games!
But its unlikely to see some heavy topic games there like Neverending Nightmares, or Apocalypsis, thats why we all love PC =))

Thats another good use of style for the sake of gameplay, while in fast movement you always know where to grab or slide just by seeing the colors, its not weird, and absolutely believable yet looks stylish and practical (for gameplay, i dont think cleaning a white city is an easy task =) )

DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon has crayon drawings. Ballpoint Universe Infinite has pen drawings. I got into both of those because of their charming art. =3 The Cat Lady and Downfall both look stunning, but in a darker fashion. I'm sure there's others that I'm not thinking of right now, but off the top of my head, there's what I've got.

Definitely play DRAGON! It's a very good game. =)
Downfall is fantastic. So is The Cat Lady. I usually am bad with horror games, but since it's more psychological horror than JUMP SCARE LAWL, I'm able to get through them. The original Downfall was pretty interesting too. Did you play that or the remake?
For those interested, I haven't played it yet, but Glass Masquerade was on my wishlist for a while due to its awesome-looking art. It just got bundled on Indiegala for anyone who wants to check it out!
Oh, and I forgot to mention this in my first post, but if you have any beta keys for Apocalipsis left and are willing to give them out, I'd love to give it a try. Big fan of point and click games, and that is some very nice art.

Unravel has a very cute art style, as does N.E.R.O. (when it doesn't stutter like hell ;x) or FEZ... there are also games like Furi and Inside, Lumino City, Machinarium, Secrets of Raetikon and a lot more I unfortunately can't remember right off the top of my head ;x.
Sry for the rather short explanations, I'll try to add them later, hopefully with some more games :>.

Didnt include Inside cause i knew it will end up here either way =)) its my goty of 2016 i guess =)) But i think Inside is more of an art direction then art style, idk, maybe overthinking it today =)
N.E.R.O. was great but i couldnt finish it... It got into infinite crash-loop at the last or so chapter at the big fountain =)) nothing worked ;(

I don't think the examples I can come up with can be as interesting or/and unique as Dark Train (I LOVED watching that "making of" video, thank you so much for sharing that game) but here are some of my favourites in terms of art.

Some that I have been following recently:
Aviary Attorney and Four Last Things both stand out as they use a collage of artwork to make their games. The first uses art by J. J. Grandville and the latter by renascentist paintings. Aviary also uses classical music by Saint-Saens, which I wish more games would do. There's many great music scores is in public domain, but rarely creators incorporate them.
Shelter, Paws, The Lonesome Fog and Meadow all follow the same art style by Might and Delight, and I find shelter to be quite good, beyond it's looks. This developer tends to make nice looking games.
All the Amanita games, Machinarium, Botanicula and Samorost, have good art.
7 Grand Steps is there with those games who have a clearly (or deceptively) hand draw art.
Goetia, Memoria and Mira (early development) also fall in that category, I think, but they have that more "soft-looking" style that doesn't give it straight away.
Along with the Flat Kingdom we could put Epistory: Typing Chronicles, and perhaps Secrets of Raetikon as sharing the same origami-like aesthetic. Paper Sorcecer also uses a paper look, but to show a stark black & white ink style instead.
The recent King's Quest also looks very good to me. It seems like it uses cell-shading, and the result is delightful. And speaking in cell-shading, let's pray that Capcom releases Okami for the PC. Platinum already said they'd like to bring all their games for PC if possible, and with the well received trend of porting old games they have nothing to lose. I'll be so high if that happens...
And the F2P, apparently never finalyzed, but still fully playabe Rorschach. I had played this game years ago, when I had a poor grasp of english, and barely could understand the heck was going on, lol. I intend to have a go at it again. :)
God, so many focking good looking games and distinct art styles. I'm a sucker for all of them. OP, if you are speaking of a more innovative approach I may be off here, because I just focused on what looks beautiful. And with so many different tastes out there the list is endless.
EDIT: some others from Greenlight:
Attenant 1942, which uses a mix of comic book art style and portraits, A Case of Distrust, a minimalist colorful noir, Kriophobia, also of a 'comic' art, COLUMNAE: A Past Under Construction, which uses layers of silluetes, Exgenesis, which I don't know how to describe but is intriguing nonetheless, LUNA The Shadow Dust, a cute hand drawn. I must have more buried in my favorites somewhere.
And some released that I forgot: Qasir al-Wasat and The Cat and the Coup, F2P. Both of islamic background art.
And I found it: Guru, also free, is a simple and short game, but worth it.

A few more, some released and the rest incoming:
Hylics, Rain World, Darkest Dungeon and Valiant Hearts are all distinctive in their own right. Under Leaves is so cute. Just discovered this game today.
Now these are either in greenlight or square-collective, the Square Enix greelight.
Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth Dawn, this one looks bloody amazing. One of the best art I have seen and based on a book I want to read too.
Yaga
The Girl of Glass
Metaphora
The Silver Key
A Playwright's Tale
Orn the tiny forest sprite
Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure
The Weavers
Mountain Speak
Funny thing is I follow so many of them and have played only few. lol and the list got fatter in this thread.

Hi there =)
So not long ago i played and finished a game called Dark Train which is a cool game by itself, the puzzles and the absence of any tutorial. but its made by Paperash studio and maybe you guessed it, the game is made out of paper. Maybe it seems strange but it looks so stylish, it a really interesting way to stand out, but also it's kind of an art project, i mean even more than usual.
So i looked back at some games that stood out to me as a different approach, rather than making things look realistic they try to make them unique looking. First one i remembered was Duckles: the Jigsaw Witch which had some really crazy art direction, it definitely wasn't for everyone but i think if you saw it, you'll probably remember it, and its not a bad thing right ?
Next one was a cartoony wierdness called Werther Quest its kind of cute and colorful and strange at the same time, but i liked it =)) Here are some keys for the demo of this game =)
From the recent i played i have to mention ESSENCE it just looks so good, but wheres the art in it some may ask ? its just graphics, but actually there are some really cool tricks there to hide lack of great graphics and look even nicer in the process. Like sparkles on the textures and a great use of light, again it starts to look more like art. If you want to see more go Here
And to close my top of the head picks is a game Apocalipsis – Harry at the end of the world It just got my attention, i mean right away, and its not hard to guess why, and this game takes its inspiration from a German painter named Albrecht Dürer. So this one is just screaming art =))
I actually have 3 keys for the beta of this game as well, but since its not released yet, you can say if you want to play it in the comments, maybe i'll give you the key =)
So what really stunning games i missed (i mean a lot obviously) show us the games you love the art style of and tell us why =)) The more unique the better =) and i suppose you found all thats not actually hidden ? =)
