So i saw* this before here given away, and i thought well just another Rpg Maker game.
Until i looked more closely at it, a game you can assumingly complete in 1 hour! but there is another 17 euro worth on DLC.
But on top of that in game items, 2 euro for a chest, 10 euro for weapons and 95 euro for Fools Gold.
Now noone is forcing anyone, and ingame items are easier to skip but some are completionists and would want even all the DLC.
Then you make a "prequel" and "sequel" and use the same thing all over again.

Then I probably shouldn't mention that Tales of Zestria charges $20 for its cheat code DLC, huh?

..whoops.

But at least Tales doesn't charge $10 for steam marketplace items that you can't even use in-game.

witness, and despair

There's multiple confirmations that those items can not be used in the actual "game".

Doesn't typically need outside confirmation if the developer notes as much themselves, I think. :P
I thought you were referring to DLCs, but as far as market items go.. market items far more often don't have in-game effects (if only for the sake of existing cosmetic features such as emoticons and backgrounds), so I'm not at all seeing the issue here. Hell, even items that do have in-game functionality, like CS:GO items, seem to more often be used for market trading than for in-game use. :P

It's your basic collection-based gaming concept, except the developer bothered to meaningfully integrate it into Steam- that is, for out-of-game display. I think the real issue here is that they purportedly used free artwork for it (and frankly, most of the images are rather junky regardless of their source), so charging for them feels dubious in its own way. Still, whatever. Makes no more or less sense than most of Steam's internal trading economy.

Deceit, dishonesty, or disrespect generally provide the motivation for inciting negative reactions to a business entity- if they're simply manipulating a market niche to their benefit, well, that's between them and the users that are interested in that kind of thing. It's not really something that I see reason to be critical over, any more than any other gaming concept which strikes us as stupid but others seem to enjoy. [I'm looking at you, social media farming games.]

Besides, the items you mention provide cosmetic benefit. By contrast, Tales' DLC you should be able to mimic with a cheat program fairly easily. I'd say the market items are still providing more distinct value, however little that may be.

In any case, paying for cheat codes is a matter of convenience- yes, you can work out the cheats elsewhere, but you're paying for a simple convenience. The weird thing about Zestria is the massive price tag for such, which spits in the considerations of players who are willing to pay for something that is effectively free. Arcane Raise (and variants) seem to all basically offer variations of the exact same cheap cheat DLC, customized to whatever version you prefer. That seems as reasonable approach as you'd find for cheat codes with a price tag on them?

As far as the market items, well, they're clearly absurd. But they're not the kind of absurdity that is misleading anyone. If someone wants to pay $100 for a cheap, barely functional cosmetic, well.. whatever, humans are ever-consistent in their peculiarities. Why would a rich individual pay a large sum for any dubious amateur art? Apparently when humans get enough money, there's a tendency to lose all grasp of its value. If I had a way to convince a rich person to throw money at me for something simple and stupid, I'd probably go for it as well. I mean, they're clearly not wanting to put that money to any meaningful use, so if they insist, I suppose I could function as a proxy for applying it to such a purpose.

So no, not despair-worthy, as far as I can tell.

I seen alot of copies of the base game atleast (so people can buy the DLC. and cards = profit).
Not sure how many copies of DLC as i can't see them.

2 of the games can be requested now at Idlearmy (so free), that's what made me look closer at the game.

Still giving the base game is a way for them to earn profit, all in all it's giving them (free) publicity and potentially if you own 1 or 2 DLC you are more bound to buy the rest for completion sake.
From the 1000 one giveaway, it only had 3/4 entries.

Sure one can argue that's "nice". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If greenlight wasn't taken on no doubt we would have seen 10 more copies in style of Digital Homicide, they gave away their games too...

i honestly don't see the diff between this and the several hundred other games that were given for free. except that they are additionally giving away free dlc's too.

i guess since it's not dead by daylight though.....

Difference is it's not just a soundtrack or some fancy extra stuff, it's alot of extra fancy stuff and cheats with several DLC that's milking it (or taking the piss) that could easily have been put in the main game if dev wanted.
As Adam pointed out all 3 games are pretty much the same, and the least bit of effort put into them (especially if you can finish them within 1 hour).

I feel this in the same way as how Digitial Homicide was doing with their games (also given free, and how many liked them?)

Like ZUP creating hundreds of achievements, also taking the piss.

like overkill and payday2? xD

except instead of $1 tier, it's free.. ^^

edit: franchises frequently are relative to their predecessors too.. isn't all of the assassin creeds using the same textures, same huds, same everything but story?

I noticed this "series" too.. looked a bit into Arcane Reraise and judging from the reviews, the short video already shows the whole game. This seems to be an attempt to make money through the community-market all the steam-community-quirks without making an actual game.

  • Low Pricing: Attracts game-collectors, card-collectors and the SG-community.
  • Has Cards (speeks for itself).
  • Steam-Emotes: Mostly Hearts, Skulls, Thumbs up/down etc.. stuff that always goes well on the market.
  • Instant unlock for 100% achievements: For all the achievement-collectors.
  • Achievements with Letter-Symbols A-Z etc.: Always popular wiht people who like to decorate their steam-profile.
  • DLC: Extra money from completionists.
  • Marketable Items: Not sure if there is a group of people that buys random useless items, but the availability saves this game a spot in the rather short but prominent "Browse by Game" list on the Community Market.
  • Game-Tilte starting with an "-" symbol at the front: Makes sure the game appears on top in any alphabetical sorting.. for example the above mentioned "Browse by Game" list on the Market, wich is frequently visited by most of the groups I mentioned here.. so thats very effective free advertising (and its how I stumbeled upon this series for the first time).

Im not sure what to think of this all.. the games don´t seem to promsie anything they dont deliver, but its still rather shady.

I thought Aldorlea was the worst when it came to releasing hundreds of bad RPG Maker games for a quick profit, but at least they had the decency to publish actual games, with actual gameplay in them (even if it's not very good). Here you have pretty much every get-easy-money-from-steam scheme (overpriced DLC, useless market items, 72 million achievements in 5 seconds) rolled into one "game". It's Digital Homicide all over again, except without the funny parts.

Are you looking for a very special experience; one that you will always remember? Look no further than Arcane Raise series! This is a very special gem, Arcane Raise is a hardcore role-playing video game created through passion, dedication and labor of love!

From the greenlight page, where you can see that there are 7 games for this "franchise".
I'm most intrigued by the first one having a nice thumbnail and the rest looking like shit.
