Planescape: Torment
Because it somehow manages to accomplish the nearly-impossible and do it's setting justice, which here more than anything else means that how you play changes the world around you.

I love BG&BG2, PoE, I like IWD 1-2, but i just can't understand weird Planescape Torment's universe. It's just another set, dark alien fantasy or something without cobolds, knights and orcs ;-) (but the game is masterpiece for it's fans, definitely).

I love the game, but Planescape is one of the worst AD&D settings, only Spelljammer is worse

it's all the matter of taste ;) For me and my friends it was the best setting ever and we spent like 3-4 years playing it exclusively :>

No doubt about that, also think its a matter of the DM. If he/she has feeling for the setting it will be a lot better too

well, me myself as our DM just grew tired of standard fantasy setting FR offered. As we were all heavy fantasy readers plus played PC FR games to death it was not a setting that would impress or surprise players in any way. Soon enough everyone grew bored with having another epic fantasy adventure - and well, sessions turned into comedy rather. It was fun for a while, but after playing ~6months of comedy we ended a campaign and decided to retire characters. Planescape setting on the other hand was very fresh and leaving a lot of space to DM imagination while designing a campaign. And it made it full of surprises. I got a base guidebook from my players for my birthday and ever since we kept playing in it for almost 4 next years, until we graduated from highschool and were leaving to different Unis in different towns.

Oh I did. I actually found the main campaign in NWN to be even more painfully dull. Still, NWN had great modding support, Pool of Radiance 2 did not, so I guess NWN is still the better game due to that.

wait - NWN1 had a story? I guessed it was just few lines of text to give you illussion that there's a difference from slaying hordes of zombies in district A and same slaying of hordes of rebels in almost identical district B :D:

(Still while NWN was a great dissapointment - I never got to modding it, as at the time I was living in small town with really shitty internet, so downloading a mods would be nearly impossible - NWN2 was very decent)

It had a story, and the game would actually have been better without it. That way I would at least not have been annoyed by how incredibly poorly it was handled and just focused on the zombie/kobold slaying instead.

Neverwinter Nights 2*. I tried 1 after playing 2 to finish the series but never really got into it. NWN2 was my first taste of D&D RPG and I liked it quite a lot.

Good thing you did not have my experience with it (that game was notoriously buggy). For me, the AI refused to work properly (characters would just run back & forth between each other in combat), and the camera would, even after the patch that was supposed to fix it, get stuck in the ceiling in indoors areas. Needless to say, I did not have a good time.

You'd probably like it, then: NWN is basically Baldur's Gate gone 3D (and with a far less engaging story and characters, at least in the original campaign).

ID has much weaker story, and no character story at all (because you don't have a set character like in BG or PT, you create set of random characters, with whatever traits they may want to have, so it would be much harder to set personal story for them), but it's very solid gameplaywise. Combat system is amazing, there's a lot of intresting gear, locations are well made and quests are intresting. It's just much more common fantasy experience compared to PT's unique setting, story and massive amount of high quality writing ;)

installing Unfinished Business on 1st playthrough is not the best idea. Some of them have references to what may not have yet happened in your playthrough, so may have minor spoilers.

no problem ;) simply put as these are questline cut from the game before development finished. After cutting them storyline and dialogues were edited to remove references to them. Restoring them puts them back into game, but does so out of context. They are back, but main storyline remains edited as if they were not here.
So for example:
Main storyline have reference to event A (which is important for main story) and give access to questline B. Questline B is sidestory resolving around event A. Thus it has a lot of references to event A
Questline B gets cut out from the game thus reference to A while giving you access to B gets removed as well.
You restore B, but main storyline remains unchancged, thus not mentioning A until much later on.
Playing through B on your first playthrough gives you spoiler about A, that was not supposed to hapen until much later in storyline.

Really only played Torment from this list. I bought BG at release but didn't get into it, didn't play BG2 because I didn't play 1, didn't play Icewind Dale because I read it was more combat oriented, didn't play IWD2 because I didn't play 1, and I didn't play Pillars of Eternity because I hardly play on the PC these days.

I do own BG EE and BG2 EE on Android and plan to play them one day.

Planescape Torment.

PS:T did not have the best gameplay though, that either goes to Icewind Dale or Temple of Elemental Evil (ToEE is a bit different, as it's a purely turnbased game).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

correction - it didn't have the best combat, on this I may agree - ID or ToEE were much better in this asect. But gameplay is not all about combat, especially in oldschool isometric RPG. It's also about exploration (and range and quality of settings to explore in P:T is astonishing - and many of them were very complex compared to other games from a genre - I still have nightmares about this freaking maze from time to time ;p), dialogues (and lvl of dialogues in PT is not comparable with anything ever released) leveling system (again this one is not strongest point of PT, it's not bad but not excellent either), Equipment (which while not awesome is pretty damn good and with a few fresh ideas - like tattoos depending on your story choices, finished missions etc) and many other minor factors ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I found leveling up, equipping my party and all that to be more interesting in both ID & ToEE than PS:T. Exploration, yeah I guess PS:T wins out in that regard, mainly because of the interesting setting. But PS:Ts main strength is its writing. If dialogue choices counts as gameplay, well that's an age old debate, one without a clear answer. I did not consider it to be that when I said that ID and ToEE had better gameplay, but I'm not going to disagree with your opinion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, ofc it's all subjective ;) I do agree that in some examples dialogues can be hardly considered a gameplay. I did not mean to put dialogues and story into same basket. Story is different part of game that gameplay (yet PT story is still excellent), but dialogues themselves I find as part of a gameplay IF they do matter for how the game play and are not just mindless clicks. This is because some game genres even have their gameplay solely or mainly dependant of dialogues - VN's only gameplay mechanic are dialogue choices, new Telltale games except for QTEs also have dialogues as their main gameplay mechanic. And as in PT dialogue choices are not just there to tell you a story more in-depth, but they also change your story and game you play in great detail, forcing you to think about them, even strategize how to lead a conversation to get result you want, sometimes forcing you to load saved data, because you screwed dialogue and ended in bad situation - for me it makes them a gameplay mechanic in this example ;)

Haven't finished any of them, but I'll go with Baldur's Gate and PoE.

P.S: Anyone knows in which game of this type there is a mage character that is on fire and cannot wear any armor? (Not the godlike from PoE).

I do not recommend installing Unfinished Business for the first play-through thou. Some of these questline are put out of context and may have a minor spoilers. Also Tweaks Pack contain some changes that may be seen as cheating - for example contrary to guide suggestions, I do not use boosted HP for TNO and Party per level, as I prefer to play PT the hard way ;) so Tweaks Pack you should use with your own consideration ;)

did you buy Planescape on GOG? I never understood if it's the original version or the enanched edition like the others

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yup, I did (actually I did not exactly - I won a coupon in GOG contest giving you one game up to 10$ value for free, back then they were not having any new indie releases like they do nowadays, just old games, so I went and got a backup copy of my most beloved game ever - PT :D:)
If you mean enhanced edition like BG:EE - it's not. There is no EE of PT and there will sadly probably never be because of some licencing issues :( But it's not original version either. It's usual GOG release for old games - tweaking it to be able to run without problems on modern systems, but that's all. No new visual effects or new content like in BG or ID Enhanced Editions.
It does support quite a few mods thou, which tweak resolution, UI, gameplay and do add new content tho.

I have high hopes for Torment: Tides of Numenera. But as it is, I have to jump on the planscape torment bandwagon. It is the most pollished isometric rpg I played.

Definitely was the best. Numenera I fear will be a huge tumultuous let down I believe. You just can't follow the original Planescape: Torment. I have fond memories of that game and especially for me.. myself.. watching my father play that when I was on school holidays..

I'm quite particular to the first Icewind Dale. Had the atmosphere and a brilliant soundtrack, and I guess being the first RPG I've ever played also contributes to my love for this game. BG2 comes close second, as it's perhaps the most polished and balanced game of them all.

I fully understand Torment's strong points but the game was frustrating at times with its monster respawns and poor difficulty optimization. I definitely enjoyed the storyline and the characters (Fall-From-Grace still is one of my three favorite characters ever), but I didn't have much fun playing the game really.

PoE and IWD2 were also good, but perhaps not as good as the three aforementioned games, and the first BG was... well... boring.

I think the OP intended to ask "What's the best Infinity Engine game?" as NWN or Pool Of Radiance 2 proposed here are not IE...

Except for PoE I've played and own all in their original CD versions, and I liked them all - BG2 more than BG1, IWD2 more than IWD.

Anyone ever bothered to click at the link in the first post? what's that counter at baldursgate.com for? 9days, 14hours... Did/Will Beamdog anounce another EE or something?

1) Planescape: Torment
2) Baldur's Gate II --> This game required deep knowledge of the magic system to succeed, far more technical than its predecessor.
3) Baldur's Gate --> Melee weapons were the order of the day in this first game. Magic was of secondary importance.
4) Icewind Dale I & 2 --> Character creation is incredible here, but gameplay isn't of the quality of above games -- still impressive though.

How come Planescape: Torment isn't on Steam? I've wanted to play it for over a decade now.

Delete Pillars of eternity and add Temple of Elemental Evil
WHy? PoE has a different(bad and broken) set of rules and some gameplay choices were really bad. For example you have a ranger in team but he's not able to hunt or light a fire(it's the only explanation i can give for having a limited number of supplies for rest).
Temple of Elemental Evil, despite his various bugs, it had the closest ruleset adaptation from D&D.

I would even DARE adding Heroes of Steel RPG and the Avernum saga to the list since the gameplay reminds a lot the paper game sessions of D&D despite using a different(but not so muc) ruleset.
