Indonesia bans access to Steam, Epic Games, PayPal, and more - The Verge

I'm not talking about my own country, but will this kind of thing happen similarly after the ruling party, whose economy has been tainted by coronas and monkey pox and the aftermath of acts of war, is replaced by the opposition party?
It seems to be a common sight in the world over the past year that good politics is tilted by external factors.
ใ€€There has always been a tendency to tighten information blockades and regulations when political instability occurs, and the results are generally not a good story.

What are Indonesian Steam users doing now?
I am hoping to get Steam working properly in Indonesia.

2022/08/02ใ€€21:55ใ€€Giveaway time out.

A few days have passed since then.
It appears that all but "EpicGames" have been lifted.

Gambling site? In my opinion, you can block it.

In any case, I guess the people of Indonesia will have to keep a close watch to make sure that no excessive censorship will take place in the future.
May things continue to move in the right direction.

I've seen it mentioned elsewhere, and it seems the block is quite simple on the DNS level.

So just changing your configured DNS to a public one like 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare) will get around the block ;)

oh and in case they do up their game and start intercepting DNS traffic, one can use encrypted DNS over HTTPS (DoH) instead.

of course if they start blocking the domains themselves, then VPN would be the last course of action.

DNS block Only?๐Ÿ‘€

This is a much better story than the old China and recent Russia, where censorship and connection restrictions are severe.

because this block is just a temporary one. But this can be permanent if the companies mentioned above are late in following the regulation.

The companies restricted in this case may quit responding to the Indonesian government if they determine that their actions are detrimental to free speech and freedom of expression.
ใ€€In other countries, the public generally shows the same attitude as the content of the vote.
(Would you give your permission for an action that would allow you to suppress or restrict statements that are not in Indonesia's best interest, even to users in other countries?)
There is a possibility that the story may be terminated.

In the worst case, as others have mentioned, many users may be taken care of by VPNs....
(Even Russian users have not had their accounts suspended. All is unlikely to be lost.)

In any case, we will need to monitor the situation closely.

In what universe regulation of businesses is ""free speech""? Free speech, regardless of what insane fringe who thinks it means 'freedeom to be racist/misogynist/xenophobe with zero consequeces' means government does not interfere with public expression of individuals, who might still be liable to suffer reaction to what they said. It does not cover for-profit corporations. Never did, commercial activity is a completely different kettle.

And in any case, volvo is the last one to have any claim to free speech defence, seeing gaben cancelled several game publishers for daring to criticize him, no matter how justified the criticism was, ruining lives of dozens of not hundreds of people over his thin skin...

You might also want to read beyond the "Read more" section of the above article.

Steam, like Twitter, can be thought of as social media.
Even some Russian users have used Steam to consult others when "censorship" took place.
From the text of the recruit, we can assume that the license is intended for people from all countries who use Steam, which is inconvenient for the "government" of "Indonesia".

Yup or 8.8.8.4, it works well.
Still it's just a stupid move by government, they allow gambling site and gacha games to exist here but banned Steam, Epic, etc.
They even banned Reddit since long ago for some shitty reason lol..

Hmmm, where is it?

I'll keep it down because it's off the subject of the discussion.
Is it that country?
There must be a disease that causes "organizations with titles" to be established in order to secure "descent from heaven" and "vote bank".
Recently, the involvement of "operative groups posing as foreign religious organizations" has become a problem for both the ruling and opposition parties, but it has been about 2.30 years since the "Sarin gas attack on the subway" with the dangerous sign that the matter disappeared when they strongly tried to proceed with the investigation. It seems that somewhere in the world, there are seven industrialized countries that have been in a dangerous state for about 30 years.

Well, it is a region where people are probably the worst at repealing old laws and rules and doing something within the "rules".
This will change again when the global rules of the earth change.
ใ€€Or, we may become a country where we get machine bodies, as all agriculture and service industries are being robotized and humans are being discarded.
In any case, nothing is expected of the "country".
That seems to be extreme in some areas.๐Ÿ™„
I fear it will soon become the world of gunmen and western movies.

The image I imagine๐Ÿ“น
Maybe nothing has changed since this time.
I think Indonesia's future is brighter than these "countries that live too far into the future".
That is, of course, if the Indonesian people continue to watch the actions of their government and pay attention to what they think is wrong.
It seems important not to become a country that can add but cannot subtract.

I don't understand most of what you wrote. But just for context, my comment above is a comment that we (Indonesian people) often say when we talk about this topic. (Edit: I didn't really know about other but it's what i heard the most from friends and relatives)

Because why would someone from different academic background take care of something different from what he studied.

(o'ฮ˜'))yup yup... Is it a common phrase?
I see, thanks for letting me know.

Because why would someone from different academic background take care of something different from what he studied.

"Power Struggle".
When a person is not allowed to play an active role so that he or she does not rise to the top.

In many countries, "officials are fixed," so it is possible that ministers are considered to have a certain level of academic ability and are considered to be good enough to carry out their previously scheduled appointments without delay.

Incidentally, African countries that got rid of all their officials because they were corrupt usually seem to have experienced collapse.
It seems that there is a need to bring up smart people and replace them little by little, and this world seems to be hell for those who seek "justice" and "fairnessโ€.

I see similar stories all over the world, but I know of few countries that have moved in good gear.
I know the Republic of Botswana cut health care costs by selling off all the medical information they collected on their citizens.
It seems that this is a country where money from resource extraction is also invested, where the cost of medical care is about $1, and where hospitals are very popular and waiting is a problem.
I heard the first president did it, Seretse Khama or something like that.
I heard those stories, however, before the Corona era.
I do not know what is happening in Botswana now.

The fact that there is a worldwide epidemic of politicians who simply cannot explain how "information gathering" and "their use" can benefit the public may be scarier than infectious diseases.

Even in the oriental island nation, "Mynacard" or "My Number" is not widely used because "distrust of security is overwhelmingly worse in the government than in the private sector" and the people insist that they do not want it because the disadvantages in case of leakage related to job seeking, tax-related issues, and bank ties are fatal. The government is trying to get people to use the system by giving them points or subsidies even though the people insist that they don't need it.
So, I'm going to stop talking about this because it depresses me to think about the number of taxpayers' money invested in equipment and personnel, and the number of descendants of those who are under the government's control.

Hmm?
I'm not sure, since it's in the local language, but did you hold a press conference to apologize for the block?
It appears that PayPal is available for 5 days on a temporary basis.
Other than that...we will have to wait and see.
Just looking at the titles of the other articles, it seems that stopping Paypal has caused a lot of financial and human problems. :(

It seems to me that the right thing to do would be to cancel and deactivate the whole thing once.
Hope things are going well in Indonesia.

it seems so. but yeah, we'll just have to wait and see. steam should be unblocked soon since they are on the process in submitting paperwork for the regulation, but the others need to wait.

as for paypal case, i think it affects heavily on freelancers that has international clients. the clients prefer to pay with paypal so it will be hard for the freelancers to get a job that way.

Our ministry of information & communication technology is a clown really. They didn't think any of their rules/decree thoroughly, and did irrelevant action OR absolutely nothing to mitigate something like data leak.

We had a big data leak last year https://en.tempo.co/read/1464424/kominfo-ministry-responds-to-alleged-data-breach-of-279-million-people
Guess what they did? They only blocked OUR access to the websites that sold our data instead of doing necessary steps to locate and prevent the data leak from happening again, which can easily be bypassed by changing our DNS, just like this stupid ESO (Electronic System Operator) block. How stupid was that choice?

You might be wondering, with ESO block then the government will also block all gambling sites & games, pornography, etc etc. Now, try to read this:
https://voi.id/en/technology/196354/domino-qiu-qiu-claimed-not-to-be-an-online-gambling-site-kominfo-please-download
https://en.tempo.co/read/1618085/kominfo-minister-johnny-plate-responds-to-blokirkominfo
They can't even distinguish a normal game and the obvious gambling sites/games. That's how stupid they are.

What's wrong with this regulation? You guys can watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIGLznIzDaM

just like ormax3 said, luckily we still can bypass the block as simply as using 1.1.1.1 and many other ways
on the first day, only several ISP implemented this blocking, so some people still can use steam normally

What are Indonesian Steam users doing now?

ofc, what else can we do except keep insulting the government on social media? :D
some of us also send the government a flower board with the words like "thanks for not banning us, sincerely betting site"

and afaik, our government wants to build the great firewall just like china in the near future

I actually disagree when they block 'select' gambling site just for PR reason (15 from the seas of gambling sites). This leads to an abuse politically, they just ban whenever it is profitable for their PR. Look how Epic Games has still not be opened for 1 week now, but because the Unreal Engine developers are not fully active on social media, they keep getting blocked while losing money each day.

Imagine if this is a niche site that absolutely crucial for a specific IT development, but because no one active in social media, it keeps getting blocked. It can grant setback for Indonesia's IT development for years, which already very underdeveloped because the communication ministry really make policy that authoritarian day by day, ignoring the tons of ads telecoms sent to citizen. The worse part is radical religion leaders and pornographic material from social media still accessible as long as they are registered by this system.

Indonesia government plan to actually regulate NAPs instead, so each and every site can be automatically blocked upon creation unless you registered. Which sounds like an abuse for indie developers, or nonprofit/hobby sites, since they are not making money yet must giveaway their data.

And they ignore the biggest problem; Indonesia citizen data leak is often happens, in this year only our vaccinations and police arrest data has been leaked. And the government only asks for registration of many things (not only driver's permit/citizenship permit), often including our face + citizenship identity card + fingerprints. Our citizenship identity card is also our tax number so it gets worse.

I can generally agree with that story regarding the possibilities.
To begin with, humanity๐Ÿ’ป is a bucket with a hole in it.
It is to be managed on the assumption that it will leak.

It would be much more secure to keep stale paper in a safe or library books.
(Realistically, it would be too bulky and limited to important matters...often wills.)

In any case, I guess the people of Indonesia will have to keep a close watch to make sure that no excessive censorship will take place in the future.

I will close the discussion once the service outage is resolved as it pertains to the gaming community.
It will be important to do your best and continue to make it known that "these things are happening these days.โ€
Essentially, that should not be what people in other countries do.
I feel that it is only justified if there is a possibility of personal danger or no means of communication if you raise your voice in that location.

If you are raising the issue of "Bandai Namco's" "omakuni", you should do it elsewhere.
By the way, I do not like "Bandai Namco" very much.
They have been exploiting "anime" and "character" copyrights to create bullshit for a long time. (Many of their responses are perceived as such)
I even have an image of the company as a company that can't fool Japanese people, so it fools foreigners.
Frankly speaking, I also dislike the fact that they are operating a social game-like game that can be understood as a "gambling site.
There were times when things were good, but I think the last 10 years or so have not been good.

At any rate, the people of Indonesia will ultimately choose things.
As far as I can see, the will of the people should be respected if they "don't want censorship".
