I grizzle about it quite regularly but despite increasing noises about that kind of behaviour (namely an inquiry by the AU Govt about ridiculous prices for Adobe products and the like) nothing seems to be getting done about it.

Personally, I already refuse to buy anything if it's cheaper in the US than AU/NZ. I'll trade for it or I'll go without. I know Europeans get shafted with the $1=€1 "maths" but we in Australiasia seem to get it worse than anyone else.

For example, looking at today's Top Sellers. The prices in orange are what US buyers would pay. I don't even want to look at RU pricing 'cos I'd probably burst a blood vessel.

Plenty of other examples of games priced up to 4x (yes, four times) as much as in the US too.

So, fellow antipodeans, and anyone else who's not happy about blatant price gouging, make sure you let your local MP or other government representative know that this is something that you're not happy about.

Is that based solely on Steams end? It can also be that high due to some kind of tax. And taxes are often good if handled well.

I'm just asking. I'm curious as to why is there such a difference.

Well steam just implements the pricing that the publisher sets. I imagine they don't complain too much about it though.
I can only speculate that publishers get a larger share of the profits of boxed product sales so digitally-delivered prices are set artifically high to "encourage" shop purchases. Either that or they're just being cocks and figure that we consumers can't do shit about it. Boxed product costs a lot more here too.

Its the developers that choose the price. Really there is no reason they should cost more.

You get shafted most of the time, but I know a couple of instances in which the US price was 3x the AU price :P

Only instance I can remember is Sims Medieval, and that was a pricing error, not any particular generosity on Steam or EA's part. :p

We do have a few games cheaper. Mirror's Edge is half the price for us AU / NZ gamers, and that new Walking Dead is $20 rather than $50, but who wants that?

I remember when LA Noire used to be cheaper for us ($14.99 as opposed to $19.99 for the US), before Rockstar caught on and increased the price of it $49.99, not to mention also increasing the price of GTA4 to $49.99.

So you want your government to dictate prices to publishers?
I doubt that'll ever happen.

Valve always claims that publishers are setting the prices, so why not write to the publishers directly?

Dictate? No, but thanks for putting words in my mouth.

I (and presumably others) have tried to contact publishers directly before. I've never gotten a reply beyond a form letter. There's no reason for them to acknowledge or react to a single user, it needs to be organised.

It was not my intention to put words or anything else in your mouth ( :3 ), but I concluded that this was your intention when you said, we should contact our government representatives - what else are they supposed to do in that matter?

Well in Australia Adobe rushed out some updated pricing for one of their overpriced subscriptions as a result of merely being called to answer questions. Would be nice if we could get some publicity on the price disparity, that might get publishers to make some concessions without having to be forced.

I'm a New Zealander too. The prices can be pretty outrageous. It's a bit stupid....

Not only do I want regional pricing to end (not a Steam thing, but some Wii games are still retailing at $90-$100 such as NSMB Wii, which has been out for at least 3 years now), but I'd like the whole region locking thing to end as well (how AU & EU can only buy PAL games, NA can only buy NTSC-U games, Japan can only buy NTSC-J games).

BTW, how is your Total War: Rome II $59.99? Mine is price gouged at $79.95 (Steam account is AU).

I noticed that (steamprices lists it as $79.95). I presume they'll "fix" it soon. Can't have NZ paying the same as the US for a premium title like that. :p

Region locking has to do with licenses often enough. The publisher in one region might not be allowed to sell that game in another, because another company will have it there, so locked.

Yeah that's what I mean with trading for it. I shouldn't need to though, and it's just a hassle and inhabits a bit of a grey area in the EULA.

That must suck. Maybe get a game that is value to the game that you want and get someone in an different region to buy and trade :D But that must suck a lot. There was a key on the forums for CS:GO but I got region cock-blocked.

Just tell your friends in US or SEA to sell the game to you. You pay Paypal?
