Hi guys, I'm doing a survey so I could really use your help.
There are many things that affect what you choose (genre, real players/NPC, time,age...). Explain to me why you chose one of the options.

Here are a few questions that can help:

  1. What's your favorite game genre? (also you can put favorite game, game series...)
  2. Has a game's storyline ever made you cry?
  3. Worst game that you've played?
  4. What's a game you thought you'd like but actually hated?
  5. What's a game you didn't expect to enjoy but ended up liking?
  6. Multiplayer/Singleplayer?
  7. What emotions do you feel when you play video games?
  8. Have you ever had a crush on a video game character?
  9. Video games are good for?
  10. In which genre do you see yourself as the main character?

It would be great to answer all the questions.

Thank you for your help! And I love you all! <3 :D

Example of mine answers:

  1. World of Warcraft is my favorite game. Genre - MMORPG,Adventure,Atmospheric,Point & Click... Game series - Syberia, Witcher...
  2. Telltale The Walking Dead almost made me.
  3. Don't have.
  4. Lord of the rings - The battle for the middle earth first part.
  5. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, when i sow first time i was in "i will probably stop play",but its was one of my fav. (Ghostbusters, Skyborn)
  6. Both
  7. Depends of genre. (excitement, anger, fascination...)
  8. I can't write, maybe my wife is reading my comments. :D
  9. Fun, better decision maker, slow down aging, can enhance your ability to learn...
  10. Adventure with great story!

From my answers you can see that the story is more important to me. Of course, there is little action, but action is on second place. It is important to me that the story is rich with great details, long, intricate, with a beautiful world around it ...

  • What's your favorite game genre? Sim/management and turn based games.

  • Has a game's storyline ever made you cry? Brothers Tale of Two Sons may have caused me to tear up. There has been one other game that served as an emotional release for me but I foget what it was.

  • Worst game that you've played? Airport Sim 2014, because its the most mundane simulator ever.

  • What's a game you thought you'd like but actually hated? The Sexy Brutale. Too bizarre & nihilistic themes that are as wide as a lake but not terribly deep.

  • What's a game you didn't expect to enjoy but ended up liking? Split or Steal. Its a very simple game, but the social aspect has been more entertaining than I expected.

  • Multiplayer/Singleplayer? Very often singleplayer, but I play the occasional multiplayer game that doesnt have a huge time commitment associated with it.

  • What emotions do you feel when you play video games? Relaxed, intrigued, and/or excited

  • Have you ever had a crush on a video game character? I guess Lara Croft, because like a real crush I found her attractive many years ago and I didn't try to take her out until just this year. (Playing the more recent "Tomb Raider" game)

  • Video games are good for? Fun, entertainment, stress relief, refining problem solving skills.

  • In which genre do you see yourself as the main character? A manager in a business sim management game

[quote]What's your favorite game genre? - RPG

Has a game's storyline ever made you cry? - Absolutely. Life is Strange is the best example, but there have been others like Beyond Good & Evil.

Worst game that you've played? I don't know, I try no to remember bad things. Blades of Time was pretty bad, though.

What's a game you thought you'd like but actually hated? - Hated is too strong a word, but I was really disappointed by GTA 4. I found it boring and unpleasant, and I just didn't enjoy playing it.

What's a game you didn't expect to enjoy but ended up liking? - Sleeping Dogs - I had my doubts, after the disappointment of GTA 4 made me think I didn't like open-world games, but I loved it.

Multiplayer/Singleplayer? - Singleplayer in general, but co-op with a compatible friend is best. I enjoy co-op experiences the most, but it has to be a compatible friend. What I mean by compatible is someone having a similar playstyle, and being respective of each other. For example, if we're playing an RPG or a game with NPC interactions, I want to take my time and talk with all the characters, and I want to play with someone who will do similarly, or will at least wait for me. I don't enjoy playing with someone who rushes ahead, skips through conversations, and triggers events without me. Co-op in some games is more than just playing together, it's also respecting the other player.

What emotions do you feel when you play video games? - Joy, excitement, wonder, curiosity, sadness, fear - probably others too.

Have you ever had a crush on a video game character? - Who hasn't? Leliana from Dragon Age and Liara T'Soni from Mass Effect were a couple of mine.

Video games are good for? - Relaxation, happiness, co-op experiences, novel experiences, role playing, discovery, and mental health. It's actually kind of amazing what video games will reveal about yourself if you give them the opportunity to do so.

In which genre do you see yourself as the main character? - In whichever genre will let me. RPGs are a prime example, but even if the game has a set main character, any game with the opportunity for role playing will see me become the main character. So any game that let's me make a choice - from Life is Strange to Mass Effect to Assassin's Creed Odyssey to Spec Ops:The Line - will see me immerse myself, become the main character, and role-play my way through the game (including making choices that I myself wouldn't make, but the character I'm playing as would). This is my favorite way to play (though I also love some games that feature no role playing whatsoever).

With regard to your story / action question, I have to go with story. A good story will motivate me to play through and finish a game, while good action may or may not do so. I love some action games, like Bayonetta, but given the choice I'd chose a game with a great story over a game with great action every time.

  1. What's your favorite game genre?
RPGS, or any choice based game really. Also love linear games if they have a good story. Favorite games are Dragon Age Origins, Witcher 3, Life is Strange, Walking Dead, Resident Evil 4 and the Bioshock Series
  2. Has a game's storyline ever made you cry?
so many... The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, and Rakuen. Ori and the Blind Forest almost got me.
  3. Worst game that you've played?
    Not sure.
  4. What's a game you thought you'd like but actually hated?
Outward. Was very excited to play with my bf but we hated everything about it. Was boring, kept getting lost, was extremely hard to adapt too. Maybe we were just bad. Also, not hate, but I couldn't get into Outlast or Undertale even though I was excited about both.
  5. What's a game you didn't expect to enjoy but ended up liking?
Stardew Valley. Was never a fan of farming sims, but this game turned me around. Also a lot of VN's like Higurashi and Dangonronpa Had bad experiences with VN's but found some I loved and changed my mind.
  6. Multiplayer/Singleplayer?
Love both, but single-player. I just enjoy experiencing a game and discovering things on my own.
  7. What emotions do you feel when you play video games?
I play to have fun and chill out. I try not to play anger inducing or super competitive games.
  8. Have you ever had a crush on a video game character?
Link from Legend of Zelda (when I was younger), Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil, Ezio from Assassins Creed, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Altair from Dragon Age Origins, These were all from a long time ago though. .If i had to pick one now it'd be Geralt from the Witcher 3. He's a good looking dude.
  9. Video games are good for?
relaxing, escaping from the real world. Connecting with others. Experiencing a good story like in film or books.
  10. . In which genre do you see yourself as the main character?
Some kind of simulation game, like the Sims.

No problem! And to answer your question, I personally like story more. I'll forgive bad gameplay or action for a well thought out story. I think action/ or gameplay might be more important though. A lot of great games dont even have a story or have a little one at that (like Stardew Valley, Terrarria etc). Also, even if a game has an amazing story, people may not sit through it to see it if the action is not fun. Its like music, the song can have a good message but if the beat isn't good, no one is dancing to it.

Action is always the most important. You can enjoy a good gameplay game with a shitty story, but you cannot enjoy a shitty game with a good story.

  1. What's your favorite game genre? ARPG
  2. Has a game's storyline ever made you cry? Telltale's The Walking Dead
  3. Worst game that you've played? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Sorry.
  4. What's a game you thought you'd like but actually hated? Not hated, but disappointed... Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion (when it became just another Blizzard e-sport to keep people playing).
  5. What's a game you didn't expect to enjoy but ended up liking? BloodLust Shadowhunter (It was enough to make me come back to Steam after five+ years hiatus.)
  6. Multiplayer/Singleplayer? I prefer singleplayer. However, I will play pure solo PVE in multiplayer because I enjoy new stories and other content that is continuously being added..
  7. What emotions do you feel when you play video games? Depends on the game really. Mostly anticipation, excitement, definitely immersion in a good story -- if its that kind of game.
  8. Have you ever had a crush on a video game character? Nope.
  9. Video games are good for? Depending on the game/genre... relaxation, immersion in a good story (especially if you're the type who enjoys reading a good book, it is a great visual/interactive alternative), problem solving and critical thinking.
  10. In which genre do you see yourself as the main character? Choices matter.

I'm very surprised by the poll results tbh. If I want a good story I'll usually grab a book or watch a movie. If a videogame has a good story it's always a plus but if they put story over gameplay it may end up in a very boring game. So, yeah, I'll go with a game is fun to play over one with a good story but not much else.

sorry I didn't answer your questions it's too early to think here (?

  1. Probably turn-based strategies
  2. I wasn't actually crying, but Chrono Trigger Had some touching moments
  3. Probably my first attempts in Gamemaker
  4. Nier: Automata
  5. Battleblock Theater, Kane and Lynch 2 (coop)
  6. Both - they serve different purposes. I like singleplayer when I'm alone and multiplayer when I have a bunch of friends to play with
  7. Interest - if I'm not interested, I stop playing
  8. There are a lot of female characters I like, but calling it a crush would be an exaggeration
  9. Entertainment, relaxation, sometimes - socializing
  10. In... first-person genre? That's why it's called so - you see the world through the eyes of your character.

Speaking of a action/story in general: the most importnt thing is how everything clicks together. The story can explaing some game mechanics, the music can set the mood of the story and the pace of the gameplay, the graphics can how we perceive the other components. It's all about synergy, and each component strengthtening another

1 Puzzle-exploration, then RPG
2 Yes. To the Moon, of course, maybe a few other ones made my eyes a bit wet for a second :-)
3 I don't remember exactly, I tried a huge number of random bundle games, fillers and so on. I prefer to forget those. There were these brothers famous for making absolute crap with asset flips, maybe they deserve the honorific tittle... I don't remember their studio name.
4 Biggest disappointment I can think of is Dragon Age 2. I loved the 1st one so much, the "EA touch" was a slap in the face, rushed story, ultra cheap level design with variants of the same thing, tactical combat with new waves of ennemies spawning from the sky...
5 Hotline Miami. I tried it once, found it too difficult too me, and never went back to it. Until someone in this forum talked about it and I don't know why I decided to try it again. I enjoyed it and played it a good bit
6 Single. I have nothing against local multi, coop preferred.
7 Any. All, maybe !
8 A real crush, no. I enjoy some characters for real, of course
9 Having fun, chilling out, venting, empowering imagination, in some circumstances it can be used for educational purpose, for brain training (puzzles)
10 God sim \o/

Ooh, I like surveys!

  1. Stealth games (stealth action is fine too, as long as the main focus is on the stealth). The Thief games are my favourite.
  2. Oh yes. A few times.
  3. That's a tough one. Woodle Tree Adventures or Dead Bits I suppose?
  4. Book of Demons :(
  5. Shadow Warrior, the one from 2013. Was never a big fan of action games, but I loved this one.
  6. Singleplayer, of course! :)
  7. Depends on the game in question. Anywhere from joy to frustration.
  8. I don't think so, but I might have come close to that with my character in Saints Row 2. I made him so sexy and badass :D
  9. For escaping from the fucked up world we live in. And for meeting people from all over the world, if socializing is your thing.
  10. RPGs, not surprisingly. Though I'd be the antagonist rather than the protagonist, that's always more fun :P

And finally, what's more important: action or story?
To me, it's the story. I can tolerate barebones, mediocre, repetitive gameplay as long as the game gives me a reason to care. On the other hand, a game could have the best action in the world, but what good would that do if it lacked the story to support it?

Meh, there are games I play for the story and others for the 'action'. When I played Doom for the first time I certainly wasn't hooked because of the story of the game. However I wouldn't have played the Gold Box RPGs for the amazing turned based combat. So... there's no 'or' sometimes it's story, sometimes action, other times both or none (I do like a casual game from time to time).

  2. Yes, Final Fantasy VII, when Aeris dies.
  3. I've played too many crappy ones for any single game to stand out.
  4. How to Survive.
  5. Warhammer Chaosbane.
  6. Singleplayer except on rare occasion.
  7. Hungry, tired, horny (no idea how to answer this one).
  8. No
  9. Relaxing after a long day.
  10. I've always wanted to be able to freely run about smashing zombie heads.
