Try fat princess fistful of cake for a refreshing indie experience. It's an action and real-time strategy hybrid that delivers endless hours of fun (story + objective-based modes). I myself have played it for very long

If you like Jrpg's any Tales of __ game, they last for hours and the story is usually nice.

First of all, make sure you install custom firmware so that you can play emulators. Sony "ported" a lot of PS1 games over to the PSP, but it wasn't long before the modding/hacking/custom firmware-ing/what the hell ever you want to call it community found out that these weren't actually ports, but rather the new PSP firmware had a built in PS1 emulator. Basically, for the most part it's a perfect PS1 emulator, but unless you unlock it, you only have access to the handful of games Sony officially sold. With custom firmware, you can just rip (or pirate, if that's your thing) .isos of PS1 games and convert them to the .pbp format and bam, PS1 games in your hands.

There's also emulators for classic systems like NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, and even a few nowhere-near-perfect N64 and DS emulators.

With all that said, despite the PSP being pretty much devoid of decent games for years, it ended up with quite a good library. Some suggestions:

  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (enhanced version of the original PS1 version with a couple new characters. Suffers from lag not present in the original and the translation is in parts a classic case of "It wasn't broken, why oh why did you 'fix' it?" You may want to just emulate the original. shrug)
  • Lumines/Lumines II
  • Mega Man Powered Up
  • Metal Gear Ac!d (Card battle game, not for everyone but I had fun with it. There was a sequel that I didn't end up playing).

I wish I could tell you more but I'm working from memory here. My PSP stopped working about a year and a half ago (honestly if I reinstalled the firmware it'd probably work just fine but I haven't gotten around to it yet). Also, ultimately the bulk of my time on the PSP ended up being used to play emulated games (like a maxed-time save file on Final Fantasy VII, perfect runs of every playable Zelda game, 100% runs of Super Metroid, etc.)

EDIT: I'd also like to second suggestions for some games I forgot about like both Dissidia games (if you're in it for the story, get both, otherwise get only Duodecim) as well as the GTA games.

If you have custom firmware or homebrew loader/whatever it is for the newer systems and firmwares, you can get a patch to fix the lag in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Yeah, MG Ac!d is really fun and imho the sequel is better and more polished than the first one :)

They're not for everyone though.

Ys Seven
The most fun I have ever had on PSP.

Dissidia Duodecim
Best fighting game on the console, so much fun, also have the full story of the first game in it.

What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord? 2
Fun as hell little game. Also includes the full first game, instruction book tells you how to access it.

Persona 3 Portable
Handheld Port of Persona 3, with some extra goodies!

Brave Story: New Traveler
Amazing RPG, give it a try!

Riviera: The Promised Land
This is a not-very-well-known gem in the PSP library. Originally released on the GBA and remastered for PSP, it offers a unique experience. Great story, great characters, amazing soundtrack. If you ever find it, nab it quick!

Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection
Includes Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy IV: Interlude, and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Hands down my favorite game of all time.

Wow, someone who shares my taste in games :3

To be honest, I liked Knights in the Nightmare (the one on the DS, the PSP port is horrible) and Yggdra Union more than Riviera, but it's still one of the best RPG's I've ever played. I've never heard of Brave Story, though. What's it like?

+1 for Ys Seven, Dissidia 012, P3P, Riviera, FFIV

Brave Story is a traditional turn-based RPG, and it has a few elements from other RPGs, like the combo system from Chrono Trigger (combining 2 characters' attacks for a dual tech).

MY ONLY COMPLAINT is when you hit an enemy in battle, it shows this kinda sound effect text, like the old Batman shows....like when Batman hit somebody it said POW in big letters. It's slightly annoying for me but its easily overlooked.

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. Being a prequel to part 1, you don't need knowledge of any of the other games. It's an action adventure game that plays quite a bit like Final Fantasy: Crisis Core (which has been suggested above). I highly recommend it.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, Has the remake of Rondo of Blood, the original version of Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. You would probably enjoy it.

If you are a fan of the Final Fantasy series, get the Final Fantasy 4 Complete Collection. It's got the original Final Fantasy 4, All of the episodes from Final Fantasy 4: The After Years and even a new game called Final Fantasy 4 Interlude, which ties in between Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy After Years.

There's also Persona 1 and 2 (Innocent Sin, the PSP remake of Eternal Punishment never came out of Japan so the only way to play it to buy it on the PSN store and download it on the PS3)

Hope this list helps you.

Valkyria Chronicles 2. The story and characters may seem a bit too anime-ish, but the game is great. The 3rd one has a fan translation, but I haven't played it yet.
