Yep, they have it, Amazon Games... I think i have all the games they have been giving since they started using their own launcher and i have a pretty nice collection of indie games :)

Hmm.. having vague memories of trying to one of the games, realizing I had to deal with yet another launcher, and just noped myself away.

The one (and only) good thing I have experienced with the Amazon launcher is that you seem to only need to use it to install the games. All of the games I have played through it so far have let me run them directly through the exe without having to start the launcher again. I just add shortcuts to them in Steam and can play them like anything else in my collection.

Which means Amazon gets my vote for the one that needs to go away. It seems to exist solely for the games they give away with Prime. There are what, 2 or 3 paid games that are Amazon exclusives? When you buy any other PC game on Amazon, you get a Steam key. So why can't they just give us Prime games directly on Steam?

Pretty much all except Steam and GOG. Haven't tried itch's game launcher as I download the DRM free files instead, but I believe it must not be an annoyance, and somehow I trust itch.
Best would be have all your libraries available on all launchers, so that you can choose what launcher to use. But that will never be possible imo.

i use itch. Is prety good, but i have uno problem (thanks to a limited HDD space): the updates are separate flders, so if you have a game istalled and it update, the last version is still there in you pc (good for archive prurpuses, bat for me and my HDD)

Honestly, I don't care for any platform/launcher except Steam. It's the only one I use.
I do not wish for them to cease to exist. Although, some I would refuse to use until the very end for some reasons.
What I wish is that I wasn't obligated to install and use some of them together with Steam. That just makes me not buy and play games that use a 2nd launcher. Their loss. Will never see a dime of my money.

I certainly don't want Valve to have control over all games, that would be bad. So may all launchers exist in peace and prosperity. Just please keep them simple. All a launcher needs is a "Download" button (with selection which folder to install too, duh), and then a "Run" button (and an "Uninstall" button, although Windows already has a "Remove program" UI, that's fine too). Thank you... but nobody listens :)

Perhaps... but I seek to get entertained (or: challenged, educated, relaxed) by the games themselves, not by the tool that helps me run them. I may be in the minority (somehow), and that's completely fine with me.

Origin has made my life so hard that I stopped playing DA:I because of it.
You expect to be able to play your games offline when you select the offline option, like for steam, but no, nonononono, I was without internet for two weeks while playing DA:I, and I tried to play offline.. it may work for the game, except that you need the launcher to launch it which, even if you play offline, will always try to check for the launcher updates.
Worst launcher design I ever saw.

None. Because I like it when there is competition in the market. Good for the users.

+1, the more platforms, the better they need to be to get a share of the market. Even though the competitors have done nothing to improve the awful launchers, except for giving away games. I've paid for games on Steam that I got free on Epic just because the ease of use of the platform.

Lol, the only thing they seem to be competing over is which one can be the worst.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, in the case of GOG, Epic or Itch (don't know anything about Kartridge). But the rest aren't competing with anyone, they're just holding their own games hostage behind their own launchers. I like competition from real game stores, not every game developer having their own storefront for their own games.

The Rockstar launcher is the worst and even most expendable game launcher. There are just a hand full of Rockstar games overall...
And remember the disaster about GTA4 and the copy protection issues... 🤣

Never heard of Kartridge, but their main focus seems to be on mobile-like / casual games?!
Never used Itch.io, so I don't care about it.

This is like shooting ducks in a barrel for which ones to get rid of. I would have to say XBox PC (and its Microsoft Store apps) is the worst because you can't even move the games to a backup drive for offline storage. They're all hidden on your hard drive. Plus the store can just barf for updating / installing apps and give you wonderfully cryptic errors for why (which is ironic since Microsoft won't let you do that for your games when trying to pass certification). My file system had become corrupted and somehow only the store apps were affected by this. Its the most user unfriendly system ever which says alot given the competition out there lol.

Otherwise, if its not steam/GOG, they're all lame. But even GOG has been stuck in beta for years now and doesn't feel any rush to resolve its security issue either. Also, thumbs down to Humble to deciding to also add yet another launcher to the list as well.

Rockstar and Blizzard for sure

Comment has been collapsed.

Rockstar is quite awful. At least Origin and UPlay innovated. Origin with its refund policy before it was mandatory. Also Ubisoft with its really solid customer service (specifically the live chat and them allowing you to literally screw around with your account and its licenses even) and the achievement points with free little bits of extra content that you can claim, also the extreme lengths and depths of game support (AC: Odyssey literally got a free expansion 3 years after release).

But Rockstar doesn't add anything, doesn't compete and since their scope is really small, they'll often have issues with servers and so on. If they fixed it, I wouldn't really care though.

Ironically GOG has been the worst for me with them having atrocious support, even worse than Steam's.

Playnite. You can add all kinds of launchers, and libraries to it, including local stuff on your PC. It has a lot of easy to install add-ons and the filtering is comprehensive and snappy.

Does it synchronize things like playtime, achivements with the game's respective launcher or only saves them for Playnite?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It does sync playtime. It looks like you're directly launching from Playnite because the game runs immediately, but It basically runs the games through their launchers in the background unless you set it up to specifically run a DRM-free exe. I'm not into achievements, but I'm pretty sure I've seen an add-on for that.

He (she?) means it was supposed to be "wish to disappear". It sounds exactly the same, but I guess for a native speaker it is uncomfortable, so he was joking about your hating of English speakers. I guess.

But I understood that as "good-natured sarcasm", even when he took a jab at Frenchpeople -- English speakers which deal with the rest of the world usually understand the little spelling mistakes we make (most even appreciate the fact that we are trying to express ourselves in their language).

Cheers!

He means it was supposed to be "wish to disappear".

Sometimes people get prickly if you correct them on basic words they already know, so after weighing the options I decided to just go with bolding the words (with the plus side that that approach doesn't have anything which distracts from the gag) and hoping that'd be enough to make the point that was being made clear. Though, I suppose it wasn't, so I appreciate you clarifying it on my behalf. :)

But I understood that as "good-natured sarcasm", even when he took a jab at Frenchpeople -- English speakers which deal with the rest of the world usually understand the little spelling mistakes we make (most even appreciate the fact that we are trying to express ourselves in their language).

Yep! Also, I'm rather fond of Jean Reno, which is what ultimately decided me on making the tease. :P

Though the "which" does kinda fuck with my brain a bit [keeping in mind that my brain's rather atypical], so I wasn't entirely posting for the sake of teasing alone; I admit to having a hope that the OP'd end up fixing the wording (after, ideally, getting some humor out of the film reference). ^.^"

Besiiiiiides... how often can I take a jab at French People? I mean, before they surrender?

the only launchers i see are steam and minecraft. i like having all my games in steam (even minecraft) and i get annoyed when clicking play in steam doesn't get me right to the game, so even the games that pop up the window asking if i want to configure or play are annoying to me. most of the games i play don't have launchers, but i actively avoid ubisoft and ea so that helps.
