You are right.
You're thanking them for being generous enough to give something away to someone for nothing.

You don't have to.....if you're an ungrateful dick. I see it as common courtesy

That's not right what you typed.....
You should of just put ungrateful not the after part.
That there is not respectful.
I also know that it is common courtesy, but it's like saying "common sense" right.... but these days common sense is not so common"

As I stated in my giveaway, I think it's quite pointless and not meaningful at all to have everyone say "thank you" (even more so since my giveaway was a Humble Bundle. lol) But most people consider it polite to thank the person making the giveaway. I also have read some people complain about not being thanked enough in their giveaway and, here in the forums, not having many comments (or at least more comments than giveaways entered) is reason enough to be impaled in a cross.
So, yeah, I think it's just better to thank in every giveaway.

Yeah, I completely agree. An insincere thanks is no better than none at all, in my book. But, sincere or not, people apparently want to hear it, so I say it anyway.
Edit: Though, I do make up for it by sending a sincere, thoughtful note when I actually do win.

There is something called politeness, you know?
You have the chance to win something for absolutely nothing on your part besides the push of a button.
At least you can appreciate it and say thanks if the giveaway really interests you, don't you think?

They're saying thank you for the CHANCE to win..............

I've always held that you should always be grateful towards the person making the giveaway. However, I also feel that the "Thanks" or "Thank You" spam is pointless. If that's all you're going to put then don't put anything at all because then you are wasting space that could be taken up by people giving a genuine thank you.
Long story short: You don't have to say thanks, and you shouldn't say it if you don't mean it...but if you don't mean it then you also don't deserve to win anything.

Hello,
Just wondering something.
I've noticed alot of people saying just "thanks" in a comment, when entering for an entry to a game, but it does baffle me why people post that. Like saying thank you for entering the game? Even if you don't win, thanks for what you know?
So I ask, do you have to post a comment on this page, or once you've pressed enter that's it job done?
Thank you!
