So, I just came across this service and was wondering if its legit or just a scam. Does it actually have a notable difference in your ping?
I tend to play with my overseas friends a lot, and a reduction in ping would make a huge difference for me. So anyone used or heard about this thing before? The main game I would be playing is csgo and overwatch.

I don't see how it works, but it seems relatively legit. Don't expect 55% less lag tho. :D

Maybe. But I can imagine it should be possible to use alternate routes that might be less congested. I would imagine this to be more useful over longer distances.

Which is a good indication that if you get 500ms there's some room for improvement.

Even with the most advanced fiber optics, it wouldn't approach the speed of light

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, a random web page tells me that speed of light in fiber is 70% of its speed in air, so I don't consider it that far.

but don't forget that the data first needs to get to the fiber network, and that the fiber network will have switches, both of which cause additional delays

Not forgetting. It's all just a theoretical discussion. It all boils down to: sure you can't get below a certain level, but it's also likely that you're using less than optimal routing by default.

not necessarily. The way fiber optic networks are deployed, and the way they're utilized, is less than optimal, and your data is not prioritized over, say, a large company paying a high fee for preferred services.

Sure, there are may be some room for improvement, but I doubt it'd make a significant difference

Haven't used it, but some googling seems to indicate that it can help.

The way forward is to contact your ISP discuss the issue they will fix it , why pay a 3rd party when you can pay same price as a upgrade to your own ISP = saves you hassle and peice of mind too

There is no real issue with the ISP. my connection is fine. It's just that the servers I wish to play on are overseas. I was just curious whether it's possible to improve the lag somewhat as they claim.

From their front page:
""With guaranteed 60% lag reduction;"
"Kill Ping reduces ping times by as much as 60%"

Marketing bullshit detected!

From their FAQ:
"How does Kill Ping Work?

To put it clearly, Kill Ping redirects your game data to its own gaming-optimized game servers. This is done through dedicated routing paths and servers that provide less congestion of game traffic along with providing more reliable path to the game server enhancing game to game server response time. To make it simple, imagine yourself driving down a road with heavy traffic and you are trying to find a clear path so that you can reach your destination faster but there are no open lanes. Now imagine you find a separate highway that is empty, just waiting for you to drive at 200 miles an hour and get to your destination faster. This is similar to what Kill Ping does by giving a free way to your game data when you are connecting to a game server. The result is super-fast connection to gaming-optimized servers for up to 60% reduction in ping times, stable latency, improved game responsiveness and a butt-kicking online gaming experience."

So to continue their highway analogy, they're a toll road next to a toll-free one.
Mileage will vary depending on time of day, top speed of your car (= the limits your ISP enforces on up/download speeds) and other factors.

If you're going across an ocean or other large geographical distance, I doubt it'll do much to improve response times though. Physical limits on the internet backbone (or any other means of transmission) make sure of that

I'm not saying such services are scam, but... at best, they're "snake oil".
All that marketing fluff doesn't make it look nicer, either...
The only 100% sure way to reduce ping is by using fiber optic in place of ADSL cables.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really. Electricity is pretty fast by itself, and ADSL line attenuation means you're at most about 5km away from a DSLAM connecting to fiber. In the grand scheme of things, that's less than 1ms.

It just routemapping, you can do it yourself without any 3rd party bs.

How?

You're going to have to do a bit of research, its not a 2 step process that can be easily summarized in a reply here. You need to learn about tcp/ip stattic route mapping, and policy mapping. I'd suggest starting with the cisco guides on the matter, for example, http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/dial-access/floating-static-route/118263-technote-nexthop-00.html I'm not sure that guide will cover everything, it was just a quick google response to my query on static ip routing.

That would only work on your private routers. You cannot configure external routers.
I did study CCNA about 15 years ago, so I cant remember any specifics, but changing the route only works when you have control over the hops. Which is not possible over the internet. This is what their data centers are for. They are the hops they do have control over.

That said, I don't have very high hopes of this actually working. Still was kinda hoping I would see some positive review that would prove me wrong.

A paying service that could be done free with some knowledge.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Assume you have enough knowledge to set up the route-mapping yourself including filtering ALL data coming out of your computer EXCEPT the one you need to direct + finding the shortest route possible for your data, how can you possibly utilize a good server without paying? Free servers are shit and most of them are temporary and worse than ISPs' servers. Don't tell me to hack their servers...
