About 7 hours ago on Steam I had some random profile who's name is just a bunch of numbers, now nicknamed Ted Bundy comment on an old Pinball FX3 screenshot that I have public that said "Sorry for bothering you but can you add me on steam? I have something to tell you, Its very important, Hope you will noticed me. TRADE IS NOT INVOLVED".

I obviously am not going to add them as often times these types of messages will be some sort of scam, most of the time leading to a phishing page that looks like Steam to get your login credentials. I investigated the Steam profile and it's always been private since it was created which set off red flags. It has +Rep for trades and most groups are CSGO related, so those were some more red flags. More than likely this is a sockpuppet account with the purpose of scams. I also posted a comment 5 hours earlier this morning on SG about a CSGO Pro and his VAC ban, so I'm leaning towards this is was got me targeted by whoever saw it and is running that profile. Often times these types of scams are tied to profiles that circulate CSGO. The statement posted above normally leads to one of two things, you'll get a "vote for a team" which is CSGO related and will take you to a phishing page that looks like Steam or a "I accidentally reported your profile" and will request you do some stupid crap like adding a Steam account of a fake Valve employee which honestly makes no sense, it must of been created by an idiot. I've linked two videos below that show off what these scammers do.

Anyways, just to confirm my suspicion I did a google search for the comment and it pulled up the same statement dating back to July of 2019 on Steam and attempted scams.

I figured posting this might help someone who receives the same message so they don't fall for this crap. If you get some weird message on Steam do a Google search of it and it may help you like it did to confirm things in this case.

A youtube video talking about the CSGO "Vote for my team" scam.

A youtube video talking about the "accidentally reported your profile" scam.

I hope everyone is having a good day.

Lot of scammers about, be careful.

My friend sent me something the other day and I nearly fell for it. His account had been hacked and the hacker was typing without using a bot, luckily the spidey sense helped because I was drinking.

Thanks for the PSA!

Something similar happened to my account. Someone had access to my account and was only able to talk to my friends and delete them, not my whole account. I was lucky and recovered it as soon as I noticed it.

Yet people still do fall for it. It's better to have another warning, just in case!

I don't necessarily think it's related to CSGO activity... I got one of those comments on a screenshot yesterday and I've never played CSGO or posted in any related threads. Most likely it's a bot crawling through a few of the larger discussion forums and spamming that comment to anyone who posted recently.

Agreed. I got the same sort of message on a screenshot about 2 weeks ago. Deleted the message, blocked the user. Problem solved.

Never add anyone with random numbers in their names, definitely never more than 4 digits, most people don't even want more than two numbers - or any at all - in any username.

I usually ignore those and then go ahead and block communications.

I made a whole lot of comments about the CS:GO pro and VAC ban but yet nobody has spammed me any such comments. I sometimes wish they did because I enjoy making fun of them. :)

Well yes, same, I linked my Steam to discord and join a lot of groups, mostly crypto & giveaway. These POS scammers come at me a lot saying either my Steam or my btc address could be vac, reported, hacked, stolen and shit, lmao, just a bunch of kids xD

I recently received the exact same message from a numbered account through a comment on a screenshot that I had uploaded months back. I recommend to all that get a message like this to immediately BLOCK ALL Communication from the user.

Thanks for the PSA :D I always think "there's no way I'll fall for these", but let's be honest, we all dumb out sometimes. So I'll definitely be more aware at least. <3

Oh, I didn't know about this one. I probably would have added them out of curiosity, bump for awareness.

This is normally the lead in comment to get you to add them. After they add you they will send you a message about either the vote for the CSGO team or the I accidentally reported you scam.

It's just a different lead in to the old "I accidentally reported you" scam rather than adding you directly. I've even started getting people adding me on discord to tell me they've reported me on Steam.

Yeah, the whole comment is a lead in for one of two scams. I've updated the posted to better explain that.

It seems like I get at least one of these "Add Me" scams a week. They leave them on my Steam wall and/or screenshots. I've even had them leave on as a comment on one of my Steam game reviews. They usually come in one of two flavors:

  1. "We need you on our CS team." (I haven't played CS in something like 10 years.)
  2. "I have something important to discuss." (But obviously not important enough to mention in this request.)

With the sheer number of scam attempts on Steam, it is no wonder that SteamGifts users are having their accounts frozen by Valve whenever they dare to say, "Congrats! You won my giveaway on SG!"

I have my profile pretty locked down to friends only but some of my old screenshots are public, that's where that account went and posted. I haven't dealt with anything like from a random person, only when a friend's account is hijacked and they send it to my chat, but even then it's only been 2 times that I can recall.

Wany's account was compromised at the time. He may have recovered it by now.

Meanwhile, another one of my friends has had his account hijacked, and I just received a "vote" message. I have already reported his account to Steam and taken various other steps, but this scam continues.
