We all know the lore, the stories. the situations and we all have thought how we would survive after it would happen.

So how would you survive after something happens? Be it a climate event, the Yellowstone Supervolcano. a super virus, global thermonuclear war (sorry, HAD to throw that one in there), or even a zombie apocalypse.

What would you do, assuming you survived at all, to survive in a situation such as that?

And, as a consolation for this- I'm re-posting my new GA's for you all.

And a wild whitelist GA for Tyranny.

My neighbor is an old gun nut - he's got three large gun safes full of maybe 30-40 weapons. I'd join forces with him - borrow his weapons, raid the local supermarket for supplies, feed the old codger.
His wife is also a fairly decent gardener, so I'd also raid the local hardware store for better fencing, then she can plant vegetables.
I've also got a generator, so if we can get a supply of gas, we'll be good for a bit. I'm smarter than the average bear, so I'd figure a way to convert the generator to use wood, or something.

Neighbor behind me is a bit of a jackass, so don't ask about the mystery meat

I just will die

Nah. In an extremely unlikely case if I somehow survive the first wave of deaths, I'll definitely be in the first wave of suicides. I've got my stash of pills.

While any tactic will have differences depending on the exact nature of the event and availability or supplies etc, chances are I'm screwed regardless.
When my glasses eventually break, I'll be basically almost blind.
My medication will run out sooner rather than later, and it's prescription not standard over the counter so little chance of scavenging more.
Dealing with people normally is enough for a full blown anxiety attack, so god forbid dealing with looters and murderers. (Hiding in my house and knifing them works but having to go outside for supplies scavenging will most likely just give me a heart attack)

Oh and if at any point my cats are among those who do not survive then I don't think I'll have it in me to want to survive anyway. And I would not be able to make any hard choices involving them so I'd honestly prefer to perish right away with them.

So don't really put much thought into the process of sustainable living in the aftermath because I'd rate my survival chances as incredibly low.

Are we assuming there'll be a lot of people still around? If so, then WE CAN REBUILD!
I almost feel like we've been lead to believe that if there are survivors, then there will be nothing left to rebuild and move on as a civilisation...

What is this survive thing you speak of?

I live in an apartment since I was little and this was the zombie apocalypse plan I hatched back when I was still a teen and had too much free time on my hands.

This is assuming all hell broke loose while I'm at home (probably gaming away on my computer), and that the zombies aren't clever enough (have a hive mind) to mobilize unlike in The Cell by Stephen King and that they can't form massive "swarm pillars" like in World War Z... read both books by the way :)

  1. Work with any surviving neighbors to clear out the block and secure the lifts (assuming that electricity is still available for the first few weeks) and staircases (barricade it on every floor and post rotating guards)
  2. Set up a huge water collection and filtering system up on the roof. It rains a lot here so this system should help.
  3. Accumulate all foodstuff we have, take stock of what we have and start a rationing system
  4. Assign different floors to different people depending on roles - this is very likely an unpopular strategy but it's critical to not house anybody in the first few floors in case of breaches. Only people in charge of security should be roaming those floors.
  5. Send out scavenging teams to gather some soil for vertical gardens, and fresh vege and fruits from the community garden we have downstairs. If possible build a strong barricade around our block, plus the garden. There are vehicles within the apartment complex so we'll probably send out longer distance expeditions (30-60-min runs) to local supermarkets, cafes, pharmacies, etc anything worth hitting - and we've got lots of them - nearby.
  6. Set up a simple pulley system so we can more easily transport items from downstairs and upstairs without having to use the staircase, though the people themselves will still have to use the stairs.
  7. Since the apartment complex is gated, the final goal is to secure the entire complex+reinforcing the gates so we could use the grassy areas to plant crops and grow herbs. Our walls are high enough (and are spiked with glass shards) to prevent anyone silly enough to want to climb through, but of course, posting patrols and setting up watch towers (tree houses maybe?) would be wise.
  8. Since guns are banned in my country, we'll really need to have come up with some ranged weapons like slingshots, paintball guns, etc. Knives are good too but it's always best to go with the non-lethal option first since it might be wise to gather survivors than to kill them. Farms don't run themselves!

... but who am I kidding? I'll probably be dead after the first wave :P

My best bet would be to get a boat for my family.
I live close to a port and it should be easy to get one, once it's clear that shit happened.
I can navigate a yacht but I'm not good at fishing, so that's the requisite for an invite.
Then I'd regroup with other boats at a small island and reconquer the ground.
