I just got an upgrade so I want to try new games which I couldn't before. So now I ask this great community to point me in the direction of games that require 4GB of RAM. Also if you can, please avoiding repeating something someone else already said.

nope you can change it on windows and it works fine.

Well, for me it doesn't. I struggled with it for at least half an hour until I found (I think) an article that said 32bit Java can't use more than 1GB. Before that I got errors everytime I tried with more than 1 GB.

Minecraft runs better if you dont let it eat all of your ram. Java has terrible memory management and depends on garbage collection to remove everything thats not needed. 2GB tops with 20 different mods installed.

Minecraft on 32 bit? Why? Use the Java 64 bit if your Windows is 64 bit will work better and more functions available specially with Optifine, is stupid using 32 bit.

You have then little more than 3Gb if you have 4gb in total, since 32bit detects only this. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778%28VS.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7

lol and I can have 512Gb of Ram on my new Win 8 Pro :D, but I'm fine with 8Gb.

1 decade ago

Yeah it says usable memory is 3.6GB but that's enough

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You will have at most a real usable 3GB ram. The OS and other running processes use some. If something actually required 4GB, it would run poorly. Plus side, hardly any games "require" more than a couple GB.

Windows limits 32bit applications to 2GB of memory anyway, regardless of if you're running a 32bit or 64bit version of the OS.
There are exceptions with the flag set, but they generally not used since it causes a lot of problems if you don't have other applications that are aware of it.

The only games that support more then 2GB of ram are 64bit. So most games that are based on unreal 3 engine can make use of 64bit, if they were compiled for it. There are very few 64bit games on the market as it is, and even fewer 64bit only games.

I played minecraft on 512 MB ram, AMD Sempron 2600+ (32-bit) and some really old Nvidia card without anything like OptiFine. FPS was ~25 on small render distance, so it was playable.

There's nothing commercially available that requires 4GB of RAM, because that would mandate a 64-bit OS.

1 decade ago
Permalink

This. No game may require more than 2 GB because of this fact.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Dishonored does, and a 32bit OS can comprehend 4GB ram, just gives some to video and other things.

EDIT: apparently Steam now says Dishonored needs 3 but systemrequirementslab says 4

Skyrim requiers 4GB... if you mod it it will reach atleast 5GB... which mine is up to

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Skyrim doesn't require 4; in fact, there's a mod to make it use 4...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It does require 4+GB if you use the HD texture packs and some mods. Or else it will crash. Alot.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i don't know what kind of mods you've installed, but skyrim never goes above 1,9GB RAM usage for me.
with 2K textures, "SMIM", "WATER" and the bethesda HD textures installed, it's capable of maxing out the 1,5GB of VRAM that my graphics card got with ease, resulting in bad stuttering tho.

also, the game's number 1 reason for crashes are, in fact, mods. (aka "the inability of some people, including myself, to read the mod's description properly")

Comment has been collapsed.

Skyrim DOES requier 4GB but i dont use those 4GB to play and that mod about 4GB is old and are not requiered anymore sinse bethesda fixed that in one of their uppdates.

so you are wrong

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So... it requires 4GB, but you can play it with less than that?

How does that even make sense, uh?

1 decade ago
Permalink

X-Rebirth will require 4 GB, recommends 8 GB. Also it requires a 64-bit OS too. :)

1 decade ago

Hell yeah, got double the recommended and got a 64-bit OS. I'm ready, bring it!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

LOL thats completely wrong.

For example A-10C and even its free to play basic game, DCS World, requires 4 GB and 64-bit OS.

Edit: Why always some people write about something like they know and they have no clue?

RAM isn't all you need. If your CPU or Graphics card is crap, you won't be able to play anything... Just thought I'd point that out. (When I bought my computer, I didn't know that. :P )

That's a bit obvious there... when in doubt, google is there to help.

Anyways, my recent build i was a bit clueless aswell since i was never on par with the technology in computers, so i informed myself on the best things for an accessable price, then made a build, voilá! A beast was born!

Yes i know, my build is pretty much good and will work for the next 3-5 years for ultra quality gaming, even if i end up lacking later, i could just buy a new gpu, it's the only thing i might lack in an early stage sadly, and i think it was the most expensive component on my build. (wouldn't be if i waited for the 700 series which got announced a week later after buying the components for my build)

Eh...I have only 2 GB and I can run mostly any game, maybe some with lag, but I can still run them.I don't really know a game that won't run on 2 GB or RAM, but you should just try games that you know lagged before as long as it's not a CPU/Graphics card problem ;)

ram wont make much of a difference

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess if you have only 2 Gb and you add more, it will make a difference. If you have 16 and you add ore, yeah, it wouldn't.
But yeah,CPU and Graphics card are more important...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It does,

Simple example; my friend has a 1 GB ram and he can't even Alt + Tab anything. It tooks 2 mins to Alt + Tab to desktop and go back to game.I got 4 and it tooks 4 seconds to do that.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I got 16GB and it takes less than a second to do it, so yeah it does count.

But i would recommed 8GB enough for the next 5 or so years. Don't think gaming technology is going to advance that much further next generation, so it should pay out.

That is CPU taking of that. Unless you both have the same exact specs except for ram, then your test is not eligible.

1 decade ago

Even with same specs you'd have to check what processes are running

The only thing I can think of that's stated to need that much RAM is Skyrim with all the High Def texture packs, both official and unofficial ones. Although as others have said, you need the CPU and GPU/VRAM power to match.

People, please stop talking about CPU and video cards, because I have good ones. Not the most amazing ones out there but I can run just about anything. The only thing restricting me was my RAM but now I've upgraded it, that's why I was asking.
