Since winter is coming tomorrow, I am trying to decide what games to look for, and I'm curious how other people decide.

I tend to buy games based on the following, roughly in order:

  1. price
  2. regular updates with good additional content
  3. multiplayer (online or local)
  4. replayability
  5. genres that I like (for instance, I always at least look at roguelikes and rogue-lites)
  6. aesthetics / art style

Some of my favorites that I've bought in the past include, in no particular order:

Some that I'm watching for price reductions / bundles / giveaways, no particular order:

What are you looking for, and how do you decide?

Does it look like something I would enjoy, and is there not something that I really object to about it (like limited activations)? Considering my wide taste in games, there's not one single criteria that's important.

Much like Fnord, my only criterias are:

  1. Does it look like something I'd enjoy?
  2. Can I afford it?

Currently keeping an eye on most games from my wishlist, though some of them are way out of my financial reach.

Games that I would probably play right away:
Antichamber
Aseprite (software)
Football Tactics

Hype (but probably would have to sit in a backlog waiting for its chance):
Xenonauts
Starbound
Westerado: Double Barreled
Orwell
SUPERHOT
The Guild II Renaissance
KONA
This is the Police
Styx: Master of Shadows
Mekazoo
Beholder
Headlander
Replica
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Knee Deep

For my nephew (so he could play it when he'll visit me):
Prototype
Prototype 2

  • Has a buy button
  • Has a recent review of mixed or higher
  • Developer doesn't have a history of mass giveaways

...

I think that about covers my habits

My main criterion these days is 'I think the kids will like it'. I think my second on is 'this is supposed to have an interesting narrative'.

For me, it's a mixture of things.
Story is a must for me. I can overlook a lot of things if the game has a good story.
And if it has good art and music as well, the deal is already sold to me!
I also look forward to co-op games that I can play with my friends.

Some of my Wishlisted games just if anyone is interested to see (and since others are also sharing their's :P ):
