What's the problem with that? I think it's pretty cool and a smart move to give games away for free and ask for donations for your next project. So people can test and enjoy the games. And then decide to donate. Not everyone is greedy and takes just the free games. Some people like to donate / support developers.
Dwarf Fortress did this for 20 years and it worked via funding. Game itself is free.

yes but do we know if the new game is anything like the older games and if people didn't pa before what makes them think most will pay now - i don't like those sort of games anyway not my style

You have to click download the game and then Claim it for it to be added to your itch.io library.

I meant itch.io library. No you can't add them on steam, they don't provide a steam key.
You need to have an itch.io account to claim them for the itch.io library.
