Let them release the original System Shock remake first:

That's a remake of System Shock 1. OP posted a teaser for System Shock 3. Both are in development.

Yeah and even the devs are different, but still...

I don't see why one would have to depend on the other.

The remake will probably come out much sooner than System Shock 3. Of course I am (just like almost everyone else) more interested in the next installment, than in the prelude, but let's be honest here for a second: many people never even played System Shock 2 to begin with.

That's the System Shock 1 Remake that hasn't been released yet. Maybe read the video description first?

I did. Soon it's going to be a trilogy.

I want to be optimistic about this. Warren Spector is leading it so that's great.

But this company's only release so far was Underworld Ascendant which reviewed terribly. Actually RPS even refused to review it claiming it was totally unfit for release. So that's... not good.

Major concern is the use of Unity engine: it's unfit for FPSs and I seriously hope they are not planning to make a walking simulator out of System Shock 3.

It's not really an FPS in my book. Far more of a survival horror. Shooting is a fairly minor component and doesn't have to feel silky smooth, it certainly didn't in the previous games.

Subnautica was a first-person game made with Unity that looked and controlled just fine.

Well, it'll hopefully be an RPG-FPS, very similar to what System Shock 2 was. And for those Unreal Engine 3 or 4 would have been much better. Oh well.

How long ago did you play System Shock? It is most definitely 90% shooting stuff, 7% weird cyber space, 2% doing obscure objectives to progress, 1% solving one of two kinds of repetitive boring mini games best solved by random clicking instead of thinking. Also enemies re-spawn continuously.

Never played the first. Played System Shock 2 many times, which is what I was referring to. I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that System Shock 3 will follow the same style as 2.

System Shock 2 still has around 80/90% shooting stuff, don't know what game you played. I'm really not trying to be offense, so please forgive me if I come across as rude. There may be a few moments where you can use an extremely basic form of stealth, and I can't stress "extremely basic" enough. But the game is mostly about going through the station and killing things on the way, I honestly don't see how you could compare it to horror survival which is much more about running away and hiding than fighting (eventhough the wikipedia tends to agree with you I don't see it).

Verdun, Immortal Redneck, The Signal from Tolva among others prove that FPses in Untiy is perfectly feasible.
If System Shock 3 proves to be a dud, it's probably for other reasons than the game engine used.

Yeah, odds are we'll see a downgraded version of this. But I'm overall cautiously optimistic.

Specter needs to bring his System Shock/Deus Ex A-game back, a competently, atmospheric and well-crafted sequel would be awesome. Fingers crossed :>.

People have forgotten how truly terrible these games are. I expect major disappointment when either game launches. I predict people will claim: "It just isn't as good as System Shock 2", while not realizing it's mostly nostalgia and neither System Shock or System Shock 2 are all that great. And I love BioShock, and play a lot of old games. Maybe these games were great when they launched, but they certainly have not aged well at all (I've played both games two years ago or so). This is merely my opinion please don't be too offended if you do like them for whatever reason.

I'd say System Shock 2 has aged as well or better than any other late-90s first-person game. Nearly any game from those early 3D years ages very poorly in technical terms. There are some hi-res mods that help with the visuals.

SS2's interface is super clunky by today's standards. But on the other hand the audio is absolutely top-notch and the atmosphere it creates is timeless.

I'm glad you said it yourself, the interface is very clunky (much clunkier than games released in the same year). Several games from the same year hold up much better technically. Ammo is much too sparse, especially if you backtrack, enemies re-spawning and nearly never dropping ammo makes this problem worse. Early game is difficult because of this ammo sparsity. The story is as bland as can be, not compelling whatsoever, with a single predictable plot twist. I don't really mind old graphics I've played many old games and grew up on them. I didn't find much atmosphere in either game that was very compelling, but this is mostly a subjective feeling so it's different for everyone. Didn't pay particular attention to audio, can't remember anything remotely memorable about it though. Again this is just my humble opinion, though I do feel I've played the game much more recently then most that have fond memories of it.

  • Simcity 3000
  • Final Fantasy VIII
  • Planescape: Torment (only played it a few years ago and it holds up much better)
  • Quake III Arena
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (played many years after release still very enjoyable)
  • Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (controls and mostly the camera is kind of clunky, still not nearly as unfun as SS2)
  • Aliens versus Predator (don't know how it aged however)
  • Dungeon Keeper 2

I only included the games I've played, but all of these far surpass System Shock 2.

Epic don't care which engine you make your games with when it comes to throwing millions your way to get an exclusive.
Metro Exodus and The Division 2 use proprietary engines. Slime Rancher runs on Unity. Hades by the looks of it uses Supergiant's own engine etc.

(Although devs that do use Unreal get another incentive to take the money; they also won't have to pay license fees on the engine for copies sold through the Epic store)
