Was a poll really necessary here?
Dunno how popular it really was but at least back then I couldn't seem to find a single friend who knew about Heart of Darkness to talk to about it, pretty much just me and my brother. It was absolutely one of my favourite ever games and unbelievably challenging at times. It had non-stop tricks up its sleeve to mess with your head. Kind of frustrating at times but impossible to put the controller down. One of few PS1 games to be a multi-disk too because of how huge it was. 3 discs iirc.

Doesn't seem bad at all. I consider myself a PS1 "enthusiast" and I have never heard of it.
My underrated game from that console would be Legend of Dragoon, the storyline can be cheesy sometimes but the combat system was marvelous at the time.

Poi I found the game through Humble Monthly and it was an absolute blast to play. It reminded me of the older 3D mario games. They recently released an ending and about 2 gigs worth of update content in order to finish their game. I thought it was great and had a lot of cool concepts to it.
Also, the first Pajama Sam. I probably put 100+ hours into it when I was younger. It was AMAZING and everything that interested me as a young child.

Yeah, I've been waiting for a long while for them to release the full game because you couldn't progress otherwise.
I tried this game by just playing through the Humble Monthlies 1-by-1. It was amazing. I would've never found this gem if I just put it in my backlog and forgot about it. I recommend anyone who owns it to try it out at least for an hour or so.

Less popular category:
Two Worlds - I can understand why it wasn't better received but it's not at all bad, actually pretty good.
Kingdoms of Amalur - This game is amazing

Kingdoms of Amalur is awesome, if someone tries it after reading this, do yourself a favor and play it on max difficulty. The game becomes incredibly easy otherwise due to the OP crafting system.

This is, in my opinion, the only fault with the game and if you have some self restraint it's not even a big problem since you don't have to craft the very best of everything :)
Edit: Stealing something I recently posted in an other thread:
Kingdoms of Amalur It's a great game in every aspect except for maybe FOV which can be easily fixed anyway. I actually have a hard time finding any faults with it.
The graphics are exactly my taste for games and the story and lore are beyond impressive. The amount of content is almost overwhelming and I have a hard time understanding why it didn't get more successful than it did. The one complaint I might agree with is that it's probably a bit on the easy side, but that's generally not really a bad thing from my point of view.

I mentioned because a new player could just go with normal difficulty, use the crafting system and realize at the end game the mistake. Because that was exactly what happened to me lol.
So because the game is so long I want to wait maybe a year or two to replay it on its full glory without using crafting and going max difficulty.
There are other flaws besides the FOV you mention. One that really bugged me was the inventory space limit. The chests on my house were filled rapidly and I couldn't hoard all the unique items as i like to do. I read that you can us a HEX editor to bypass this but this is still a flaw.
The storyline, this is subjective and depends from each person. I really enjoy storylines that detach themselves from the Good vs Evil dichotomy, like KOTOR 2 and some CRPGs. I like the storylines to have philosophical concepts and scientific too.
So for me the storyline was regular but still I have a part of me who enjoys cheesy and stereotypical plots occasionally.
The lore, now I have to give you that one. It is top notch and the world never feels void.
The aspect that I enjoyed the most about it, was the art direction. I spent many minutes staring at the backgrounds, assets, textures wondering how many time and dedication all of that took.
The final flaw that is not directly from within the game, is its legal status. If I were rich, I would buy the rights of the game and just give it to Obsidian/Interplay or something like that. I want a sequel!!!!

Yes, it's a good thing to point out, I agree. Also, indeed the art direction and scope of it all. Although a lot are reused in caves and such there are just so much details everywhere.
I doubt we will ever see a game this thoroughly well made even though it, as far as I know, was rushed in the end, but one can hope :)

You are right about the ending.
What about Two Worlds? You mentioned it and I have it but since it has been gave away for free in so many sites I always thought it was garbage without really doing any research on it. Without spoilers, what did you like about it?

Oh I don't really know if I'd be able to quantify it very well. It's a pretty big and open RPG with a, for my standard, decent story. The graphics are a bit, well maybe a lot, dated by now but once you get in to a game that tends to matter less anyway. The loot system is pretty unique also. Can't say it's good or bad per se, but different is always kind of good for me :)
Two things make it seem way worse than it really is though. The cutscenes are abysmal. They are way worse then the in game graphics and just pulls you out of the game. Thankfully they are pretty rare. Then there's the combat that's pretty unforgiving, at least from the beginning. Now this is something I don't mind at all but I guess it didn't go down well with a lot of people :P
There's actually an update and a DLC for the sequel Two Worlds II planned to be released soon if I recall correctly.

I am checking the game's steam page and it doesnt look that dated for me lol. I still play Morrowind every now and then and I give a damn about the graphics on it and I am playing an old ass PS1 game called Tales of Destiny so my eyes are adapted to that.
Also my current desktop cant handle new games at all so I haven't really experienced newer graphics in maaany years.
Thanks for the recommendation, Ill give a change to the Two Words franchise since by watching your profile I can notice you are experienced on the RPG department.
Well it was a good conversation, cheers and have a good time gaming.

Yes that probably sounded much harsher than I wanted. I quite like the graphics and I'd even go so far as to say that the game is beautiful at certain points but the character models and animations are simple and the landscapes tend to have an empty feel to them. Also I think those few cutscenes may have tainted my recollection somewhat. They are really that bad, even by my low standards, lol. Just take a look below and you'll see. You'll also notice that the voice acting stands out quite a bit but that's something I never had a problem with myself. I just imagine it's part of the lore and setting.

Hey, I agree with your choices, phoenix. Loved Freedom Planet and also the Nancy Drew games, only played 5, I think my favorite is the Secret of the Old Clock. It seems like they're not making any new ones now, though. :-(
Also agree with Spiff on Kingdoms of Amalur.

I loved both!! And LogiGun is really underappreciated!

Crimzon Clover: World Ignition probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves. (Then again, that holds true for most shmups that aren't called Ikaruga, Mushihimesama or DoDonPachi for some reason)
Super House of Dead Ninjas is an ace randomized platformer that doesn't get mentioned often. (also, it's balls-hard)
The Fall is a cool little adventure with the only major problem being that it's far too short.
Tetrobot & Co. is a cute little platformer that could use more attention

26 hours in it, kind of my go-to game for a few minutes :)
Tetrabot & Co is also really outstanding puzzle, especially for android devices! Clever, witty, cute.

Lakeview Cabin Collection - a 2D, horror, pixel, puzzle game with different episodes - really fun and 2spooky4me!
Circa Infinity - a difficult platformer where you move in circles.
Offspring Fling! - a retro puzzle platformer with cute little animals <3

Gods Will Be Watching was a really unique experience and one of the few games where I was still thinking about the story long after finishing it.
PixelJunk™ Nom Nom Galaxy is another unique little game that dares to try out new stuff and doesn't seem to be very well known.

The Journeyman Project series.
Glad to see they finally have one of them on Steam. Haven't bought or played it yet on Steam, mostly because I'm afraid it won't be as good as I remember.

It probably wont depending on how your mindset has changed as you grew up. Like me, I rewatched the "It" 3 episode miniseries because of the new movie coming up, I remember that movie was incredibly scary for me and caused me trouble. Now after revisiting it, I ended up thinking: Is that it? this thing impacted me so much before?
The novel is so much better if anyone is interested.

Freedom planet is great, the sequel looks like it'll be even better.
I've always felt the Jet Set Radio and Yakuza games aren't played by enough people.

Primordia has robots, Logan Cunningham, and Logan Cunningham voicing a robot. It is absolutely one of my favorite point and clicks (along with Grim Fandango and Technobabylon)

Both are RPG Maker games, but they are thankfully very far from the crappy Dragon Quest clones made in that engine. The first one is an investigation game where you battle opponents with words in a weird Christie / Layton - ish setting, and the second one is... it's very hard to tell what it is without spoiling it. Let's just say it's the most "meta" thing I've ever played.

I really liked Last Word, too! It felt almost Phoenix Wright-y in a way, and I liked the funner-than-normal rock paper scissors 'combat' system.

Kami and Chime and Chime #.
Kami is a unique paper-folding puzzle game. And the Chime games are evolutions of Tetris with some really nice electronica.

Since my favourite genre is classic adventure, most of my personal top is not that well-known. Still, first of all, I'd mention brilliant and almost entirely forgotten games by Legend Entertainment, mainly Blackstone Chronicles, Shannara and Death Gate. The first one is a first-person horror adventure about ghosts in an asulym, the second and the third - fantasy stories, all of them written on a superb level. Yep, that's the 90s. Talking about nearly-forgotten oldies, I'd also mention The Dark Eye, a puppet play based on Poe's short stories; William S. Burroughs has recited several poems by Poe for that game. As for modern adventure games, while they usually get a pretty limited audience (unless it's an interactive movie or a walking simulator), they are still recognised in their niche, so there's no real need to talk about games like The Cat Lady, Primordia or Stasis. The only modern adventure I'd like to mention is Sunset: basically, the game turned out to be too complex, and most of the players were unable to discover the humanistic message behind what they though was a cleaning lady simulator. It's repetative, it's very slow-paced, but it's a masterpiece nonetheless, just an unconventional one.

Just wondering what games you all like that people might not know about.
Some games I loved, but that seem to be lesser known:
The Nancy Drew PC games (my favorite is Shadow at the Water's Edge) - These are quirky, fun, mystery games that are similar to HOGs but not exactly the same. The whole series is pretty fun, but Shadow at the Water's edge is my favorite because
I'm a weebI really liked the Japanese setting.Freedom Planet - Easily my favorite platformer. It is a sort of spiritual successor to the old Sonic games on the Sega Genesis, but IMO a lot more fun. I don't know if the story is good because I skipped it (I don't care about story in a game like this), but the platforming and gameplay is top notch.
What are your "lesser known" favorites?
